Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer's new trio, Baboon Moon, consolidates many of the musical concerns of his other projects over the last decade-and-a-half including, in particular, extending the vocabulary of Miles Davis's electric bands of the 1970s. As always, Molvaer's fractured lyricism draws on Davis's legacy, but his often heavily processed sound can make his trumpet sound like an entire orchestra. Indeed, it's often diffucult to tell who is playing what, as Molvaer, guitarist Stian Westerus, and drummer Erland Dahlen make their sound orchestral through innumerable electronic processes. All the while, though, the music maintains its forward momentum through the explosive Dahlen's (occasionally fractured) grooves, and clever composition that are tailor-made for this band by Molvaer.
