Exhibit runs from October 9 to December 20, 2009.
This new travelling exhibit from the OPP Museum traces the development and social phenomena of the mug shot and showcases 100 mug shots of suspects accused of crimes over 100 years ago.
Visitors to Arresting Images have the rare opportunity to gaze directly into the eyes of people arrested over 100 years ago - pickpockets, confidence men, escaped fugitives, shoplifters, horse thieves and even murderers. These images are compelling, fascinating and thought-provoking.
The mug shot of Edward Baker:
Crime: Burglary; Arrested: June 22, 1900; Age: 19; Build: Stout; Eyes: Large Blue
Perhaps one of the most compelling faces in the mug shot collection, Edward Baker broke into the Michigan Central Railway Station. He stole approximately one dollar's worth of railway tickets, 'about 44 cigars,' and mutilated two machines. Listed as an 18-year-old in Central Prison records, Baker was sentenced to serve two years less a day. Upon admittance, he was judged 'fit for a hard day's labour' and spent his time working in the Prison Broom Shop. His inmate case file gives no indication of what happened to Edward Baker upon his release, when his sentence expired on June 21, 1902.
