Canadian Arts Presenting Association (CAPACOA)

Canadian Arts Presenting Association/l'Association canadienne des organismes artistiques (CAPACOA) is an association of performing arts presenters, such as the River Run Centre, which frequently present touring performances. The public section of CAPACOAs site outlines its mandate and goals, provides information on its annual conference and showcase, and offers links to its members.

The Centre for Cultural Management was established at the University of Waterloo in 1989 to provide leadership in cultural management education and research. One of the ways the Centre is meeting its objective of addressing the learning needs of current and future managers is by offering professional development opportunities for cultural managers through manageculture.com.  This virtual professional development site for Arts, Culture and Heritage Managers offers onsite lessons in various aspects of management, and a bibliography (with links) of online documents about research into Cultural Management.  It is associated with several professional associations such as the Association of Cultural Managers, the Museum Management Special Interest Group and the Canadian Cultural Research Network and provides links to these websites.

Operated out of Germany, with a site available in English or German, Kulturemanagement offers an international perspective on arts management. The site is searchable database of articles on arts management from around the world. The site also offers international discussion boards, a calendar of international conferences and events on arts management, book reviews and an opportunity to build an international network of contacts. A monthly email newsletter can be requested to keep up to date with what is being posted on the site.

Canadian Dance Assembly

The Canadian Dance Assembly was founded in 2002. It exists to facilitate the dynamic exchange of information relevant to Canadian professional dance of all forms and aesthetics. It is working to cultivate a strong national voice for Canadian professional dance and to support the development of resources for this field of artistic expression. This site offers information on the organization�s activities, and links to a variety of dance companies and organizations across the country and internationally.

The CanDance Network is an association of organizations and facilities which present regular dance series. The organization serves dance presenters' needs, and supports their work with the dance community and its marketplace.  This website offers links to 34 dance presenters across Canada with details on their dance series, facilities, and contact information.  It also provides a calendar of dance performances across the country.

Dance Collection Danse

A virtual museum about the history of dance in Canada, this website lists and exhibits part of the collection of thousands of items included in this important archive. It also provides information on how to access other items in the collection which includes oral histories, reconstructed choreographies, video tapes of works by Canadian choreographers and books written about Canadian dance and dancers. The collection initially concentrated on the early 20th century and is now working on compiling archives for the 1960�s and 1970�s.

This membership-based association works towards the promotion and development of dance in the Province of Ontario. The website offers links to Ontario based dance companies, presenters and schools.  It also features a calendar of dance performances in Ontario, a newsletter, details on upcoming auditions, workshops and seminars.

DUO supports Ontario’s independent dance artists and small scale dance companies with a variety of administrative and management services.  The website offers details on DUO’s programs and online handbook on running a dance business called “step by step”.  Several of the sections in this handbook, such as making a publicity plan and strategic planning, would be of assistance to independent artists and small companies in other arts and heritage fields.

The mandate of the Centre is to help dancers make the necessary transitions into, within, and from professional performing careers. Dancers at different stages of their careers can receive counseling, grants and career planning assistance but there is a particular emphasis on those dancers who are retiring from live performance. In order to access these services, dancers must be members of the organization. The website outlines details of these services, highlights dancers who have made successful transitions into new careers and details membership criteria.

A support and advocacy group for anyone who studies or works in the field of Canadian dance studies. The SCDS encourages, promotes and publishes research and writing in Canadian dance studies, and provides a forum for dance researchers to discuss their work with each other. Imagine is comprised of the union of two of Canada's leading charitable umbrella organizations; the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy (CCP) and the Coalition of National Voluntary Organizations (NVO)Imagine provides a number of resources to aid organizations in their fundraising efforts. The site includes an example of an Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code and access to research and data on the not-for-profit sector in Canada. Imagine provides information, research and data in specific fields such as fundraising, volunteer management and nonprofit statistics. An online Directory to Foundations is available for an annual fee.

Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records (FACTOR)

This organization supports the growth and development of an independent Canadian recording industry. It provides grants to assist Canadian recording artists and songwriters to produce CD�s and videos of their work, and supports tours, record labels, distributors, recording studios, video production companies, producers, engineers, and directors. The website has descriptions of all of its granting programs, including criteria for grants, deadlines and downloadable copies of the application forms.

Provides grants in a variety of areas. For performing arts organizations the most commonly accessed program is the Arts Presenters Program and for heritage organizations it is the Museums Assistance Program. However, there are a number of other granting programs that may be appropriate for specific projects.� The website offers criteria for grants, deadlines and downloadable applications forms.

A granting body which supports the independent producers to develop and produce films, videos or interactive digital new media programs in a variety of subject areas using the formats of documentary, docu-drama, drama and animation to inform, educate and/or instruct. The website offers information, criteria and downloadable application form for CIFVF grants, FAQs about applying for support, a directory to non-theatrical distributers, and a links page which lists funding sources, training programs and other resources

The City of Guelph offers a Community Grants program, a portion of which is earmarked for arts and heritage activities. Only not-for-profit organizations are eligible to apply. The deadline for applications is in the fall of each year (check for actual date).

Offers grants for internships in the cultural sector through the Youth Internship Program. Application forms are available online. Also provides research and resources on personnel management on the website, including studies on issues such as compensation for cultural managers.� Has online publication called HR Tools and Best Practices which offers practical guides on Job Descriptions; Recruiting the Right People; Coaching, Mentoring and Succession Planning;� Managing Employee Performance; Dealing with Challenge and Conflict;� and Termination of Employment.� These guides can be downloaded from the site.

Grants for touring other countries and bringing in potential buyers to see arts and heritage events in Canada are available through this federal department.  Grants available alter from discipline to discipline.  The site also includes papers on Canada’s policy on culture, and contact information for cultural attach­­és in Canadian embassies and consulates around the world.

Provides some grants related to training workers, but does not specialize in the arts and heritage sector. The program most often used by arts and heritage groups is the Summer Work Experience program which will provide not-for-profit organizations with the full salary for a summer student position. The website has brief descriptions of the programs it operates and funds, but generally refers you to the local HRDC office for further details.

Grants are available from this source for Heritage organizations, including operating grants for Museums.  This ministry also provides grants for Arts Service Organizations and operates the Cultural Attractions Fund, the Cultural Strategic Investment Fund and other special granting programs.  The website has basic information on the grants and contact information for its regional offices.

The Canadian Artists and Producers Professional Relations Tribunal is a federal agency that administers the regime of professional relations contained in the Status of the Artist Act. This Act establishes a framework for the conduct of professional relations which allows for collective negotiations between independent professional artists (artists who are not employees) and producers within the federal jurisdiction. It publishes information on the Scientific Examination and Analysis of selected artifacts and provides detailed reports on its Outreach Activities and On-site Consulting on preservation.  The site also offers a calendar of workshops in the field of conservation and other learning opportunities.  The organization provides Exhibit Transportation Services to aid with touring, and has an Emergency Response Service which will assist museums and related institutions with the salvage and recovery of endangered collections.

It also provides links to a wide variety of websites accessible through a Subject Index. The Amicus Web service will search the National Library records and over 26 million records from 1300 libraries for materials on the subject you are researching. It will tell you which library holds the material and whether or not it is available for inter-library loans. Finally, the website offers a listing of new books which will be released in Canada in the next few months.
