Free Motion Machine Embroidery                                                Teacher:  Judy Eckhardt

The art of free motion work on your sewing machine allows the creation of outlines, embroidered designs, and stitched art pieces.  This class is for you if you want to experiment with intuitive design and play with unique creative design techniques on your home sewing machine.  We will look at a variety of free-motion stitching techniques that give unusual effects.  We will briefly discuss needles, threads, presser feet, and tension adjustments.  A basic machine with some decorative stitches and the ability to lower the feed dogs is needed.

Level: All Skill Levels

Beading Rocks & Talking Sticks                                        Teacher:  Barbara Lee Johnson

Learn to use tubular peyote stitch to cover sticks and rocks.  Instruction will also include increasing and decreasing the beads to achieve a tight fit.  Various embellishing techniques will also be considered.

Skill Level:  All levels

 Landscapes                                                                       Teacher:  Margot Kearney

The last three weeks will be spent creating beautiful, whimsical, one of a kind pieces of jewelry using various colours and sizes of zippers.  Why not make yourself a fascinator or a special brooch to show off an outfit!  Class fee $2.

Skill level:  All levels.

 Independent

This class is for members who want to do their own thing, get help from sister stitchers or maybe spend time checking out the library

WINTER/SPRING 2013

 Fabric Jewelry                                                                   Teacher:  Laura Dobrindt

We will work several small projects using a variety of fibres to create necklaces, bracelets and brooches which will be embellished with stitching and beads. Must know basic embroidery stitches.

Level:  All levels

Creative Use of Stitches                                                    Teacher:  Ann Bernard

Although basic stitches will be taught, the focus of this class is in discovering how specific stitches can be manipulated and used in ways the textbooks never mention.  Different threads create even more variety.  This will be a journey of discovery, leading to knowing the limitations and possibilities of each stitch.  You will learn from examples from the past but also from each other's experiments. The goal is to increase the repertoire library of creative stitchers so that they have a stitch or a variation to suit their creative needs.  Your completed samplers can be compiled into any format of your choice.  First, decide on an overall colour scheme that will give you combinations of colour range and contrast.  Homework is an essential part of this course.  So be prepared to soar to new heights!

Level:  Intermediate and Advanced.

Italian Smocked Pillow                                                       Teacher:  Mavis Brown

This type of smocking has a lot of texture and is worked in and out of the pleats rather than picking up a small amount of fabric as in English smocking. The pattern appears after releasing the gathering thread.  Create a beautiful pillow for a special room.

Level:  All levels

Face of Lace                                                                                Teacher:  Ruth Douglas

Lace is an ornamental openwork fabric sometimes delicate and airy, sometimes heavy and sculptured.  Needle lace is worked with a threaded needle which is used to make combinations and variations of the buttonhole stitch over, around and between an outline of couched threads.  This technique has its own unique properties which make it one of the most versatile of the fibre media.  Let's stitch and explore!

Level:  All levels

 Needlewoven Neckpieces                                                            Teacher:  Judy McMullan

Needleweaving can be a simple in-and-out weave or can venture into patterns, 3D elements, even lace making. Your neckpiece will sparkle with beads and jewel-toned threads. Intermediate students may choose to interpret classic weaving patterns in their piece.
