Question: Answer:
Am I too old / too young for the stories?

Discipline: Theatre
Guelph Guild of Storytellers

Our stories are suitable for age 10 to 90. You don't really intend to bring a pre-schooler to an event that starts at 8 in the evening? No, we don't tell those stories either.

Some of us also tell to younger audiences at other times.

How do I learn to be a storyteller?

Discipline: Theatre
Guelph Guild of Storytellers

You learn by doing. Some nights we have open mike, where anyone can tell a (short) story. You're always welcome to a business meeting to practise.

Ann Estill also gives seminars in March at the Arboretum.
Tips and Tools for Beginning Storytellers

Will you tell at my event?

Discipline: Theatre
Guelph Guild of Storytellers

Hard to say. Some of our members tell just at the Boathouse, others tell at seniors' homes, charity events and birthday parties. Some charge, some don't, depending on the venue. Call our contact person and she'll see who's available. Or check the members profiles at the left; some members have included phone numbers for direct contact.

Are the stories true?

Discipline: Theatre
Guelph Guild of Storytellers

Of course they're true.  They just might never have happened.

Can anyone tell stories?

Discipline: Theatre
Guelph Guild of Storytellers

You already know that.  You simply have to learn that you know how.

Do storytellers really believe in fairies?

Discipline: Theatre
Guelph Guild of Storytellers

And also in goblins, talking rabbits, leprechauns, tooth fairies and lucky rocks.

Is storytelling fun?

Discipline: Theatre
Guelph Guild of Storytellers

More fun than an ice cream cone on a hot day.

Why the 5 minute limit for open mic?

Discipline: Theatre
Guelph Guild of Storytellers

This is to protect the audience. Yes, we have seen people read never-ending stories, stumbling over the words, mumbling into their notes.

If you are an experienced performer, then you already know the length of your story and have it well-prepared. Give us a call and we'll add you to the program. Even better, come to our monthly business and rehearsal on the first Wednesday of the month and join us in giving things the final polish.
