DESCRIPTION:Community is central to Justin Favela’s art practice and the public is invited to join the visiting artist to participate in a collaborative workshop. \n\n\nBe a part of transforming the gallery this fall! Community is central to Justin Favela’s art practice and the public is invited to join the visiting artist to participate in a collaborative workshop and contribute to murals that will be part of Favela’s vibrant large-scale installation\, Entrelazados\, on view this fall in the vaulted two-storey space of the Art Gallery of Guelph. At the core of Favela’s work is an exploration of his own intersecting identities as a Guatemalan-Mexican-American artist\, adapting and repurposing traditional Mexican or Latin American craft practices\, particularly cartoneria or piñata making. Join us for an afternoon of artmaking and be part of the vivid designs that Favela is creating using everyday materials like paper and glue. All are welcome; no experience necessary. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening party celebrating Entrelazados: Justin Favela and an introduction to the exhibition by the Las Vegas-based visiting artist. Investigating his own heritage and identity as a queer\, Latinx\, Guatemalan-Mexican-American born in the southwestern United States\, Favela’s work remixes popular culture\, lived traditions\, and art history as a way to amplify the interwoven influences on personal and collective experiences. From sculptures to a new site-specific immersive installation\, Favela adapts simple materials like cardboard\, paper\, tape\, and glue to speak to the powerful interwoven legacies that shape one’s everyday existence and how they converge within collective histories of migration and community. \nMarking the first exhibition of Justin Favela’s work in Canada\, all are welcome to this free event; refreshments and a cash bar will be available. DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, September 12 at 6:30 pm\, for the launch of the Art Gallery of Guelph’s fall season featuring two exhibitions: Do You Remember Love and Some kind of we. Both exhibitions explore themes of identity and connection through diverse artistic practices. Do You Remember Love integrates video and traditional quillwork to examine identity and relationships\, while Some kind of we uses video and print to reflect on trans relationality and solidarity. Curators Maria Hupfield\, Jason Lujan\, and Dallas Fellini will be in attendance alongside artists Cleopatria Peterson and B.G-Osborne. \nAccessible parking and a limited number of free parking spots are available in the lot beside and behind the gallery with an entrance off Gordon Street\, just north of College Avenue. SUMMARY:2023 Headwaters Arts Fall Festival Juried Art Show & Sale
DESCRIPTION:Headwaters Arts proudly presents the 28th Annual Fall Festival Juried Art Show and Sale celebrating art and creativity with the unveiling of the over 70 original works of art by 75 selected artists. Excellence in art is our mantra and our 2024 Jurors Shauna McCabe and Mark Fletcher certainly delivered on there selections . Dr. Shauna McCabe is the Director of the Art Gallery of Guelph\, and former Executive Director of the Textile Museum of Canada with more than 15 years experience as an arts administrator\, as well as professor and Canada Research Chair at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. Previously\, she was Director of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and Senior Curator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Prince Edward Island. In 2007\, she was appointed Canada Research Chair in Critical Theory in the Interpretation of Culture\, leading interdisciplinary research and practice at Mount Allison University where she was also Associate Professor. McCabe completed a PhD at the University of British Columbia\, an MA at Simon Fraser University\, and a BA at McGill University. Mark Fletcher is co-owner of Cloud Gallery and a long-time lover and supporter of the arts. He was the Co-Chair of the Orillia Museum of Art and History for 4 years and Chair of the Orillia Heritage Committee for 8 years. At the Museum he led a push for growth and innovation that included a $2m renovation of the Heritage Building and a restructuring of the organization. His business experience includes working for large Canadian corporations (Bell\, General Motors\, Scotiabank) and innovative marketing agencies (Perennial Inc.). He is now a full-time faculty member at Georgian College in Barrie teaching courses on entrepreneurship and investing. He is married\, a father of 4\, and lives in Orillia. He has organized artist retreats\, bringing together a community of artists at his recreational property in Severn Township\, Rancho Relaxo\, where he supports artist residencies. More recently he is expanding those programs to Snug Harbour on Georgian Bay and beyond with Cloud Gallery. \nThe festival/art show and sale runs from September 18\, 2024 until October 6\, 2024 at the Alton Mill Arts Centre in Alton\, Ontario.
