SUMMARY:2023 Headwaters Arts Fall Festival Juried Art Show & Sale
DESCRIPTION:Headwaters Arts proudly presents the 28th Annual Fall Festival Juried Art Show and Sale celebrating art and creativity with the unveiling of the over 70 original works of art by 75 selected artists. Excellence in art is our mantra and our 2024 Jurors Shauna McCabe and Mark Fletcher certainly delivered on there selections . Dr. Shauna McCabe is the Director of the Art Gallery of Guelph\, and former Executive Director of the Textile Museum of Canada with more than 15 years experience as an arts administrator\, as well as professor and Canada Research Chair at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. Previously\, she was Director of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and Senior Curator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Prince Edward Island. In 2007\, she was appointed Canada Research Chair in Critical Theory in the Interpretation of Culture\, leading interdisciplinary research and practice at Mount Allison University where she was also Associate Professor. McCabe completed a PhD at the University of British Columbia\, an MA at Simon Fraser University\, and a BA at McGill University. Mark Fletcher is co-owner of Cloud Gallery and a long-time lover and supporter of the arts. He was the Co-Chair of the Orillia Museum of Art and History for 4 years and Chair of the Orillia Heritage Committee for 8 years. At the Museum he led a push for growth and innovation that included a $2m renovation of the Heritage Building and a restructuring of the organization. His business experience includes working for large Canadian corporations (Bell\, General Motors\, Scotiabank) and innovative marketing agencies (Perennial Inc.). He is now a full-time faculty member at Georgian College in Barrie teaching courses on entrepreneurship and investing. He is married\, a father of 4\, and lives in Orillia. He has organized artist retreats\, bringing together a community of artists at his recreational property in Severn Township\, Rancho Relaxo\, where he supports artist residencies. More recently he is expanding those programs to Snug Harbour on Georgian Bay and beyond with Cloud Gallery. \nThe festival/art show and sale runs from September 18\, 2024 until October 6\, 2024 at the Alton Mill Arts Centre in Alton\, Ontario. SUMMARY:The Landscape is Dead- Anna Gaby-Trotz and Richelle Forsey
DESCRIPTION:Hours are Wednesday – Saturday\, 3pm – 5pm until November 2nd \nCan you (we) save the world by looking? \nThe idea of wilderness – land uncultivated and uninhabited by human beings – raises questions about how much truly natural land is left in a world that values the production of goods over people and the land. Through collage and digital montage of our photographs of agriculture\, land-management\, resource extraction sites\, utilities infrastructure\, the aftermath of forest fires\, icebergs\, development sites\, refuse\, development\, and destruction\, we open up our individual practices to collective thought and authorship through creative play and collaboration used to create this new body of work. \nThe language of hope and despair is woven into this work through screen printed text and images. The camera is a tool of agency and the collaborative process a de-centering of individual artist authorship to prioritize our explorations and the invitation for slow looking. \nHere\, in Wyndham’s 3rd Floor Gallery\, “The Landscape is Dead” reflects the intersection of the landscape and the built environment for contemplation\, to illuminate the complex and troubling questions about human impacts on the natural world.

SUMMARY:Maud of Green Gables: How L. M. Montgomery’s Anne Enchanted the World Author/Illustrator: Janet Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Maud of Green Gables is a timely and timeless book created to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of L. M. Montgomery on November 30th\, 2024. \nWhy has Anne Shirley\, the freckled red-headed orphan with a genius for calamities\, enchanted the world so completely? And why has Anne of Green Gables\, a 1908 publication with endearing characters and wholesome family values\, been such a legendary success? Anne remains one of the\nmost loved and recognizable literary characters\, but less is known about her creator\, Lucy Maud Montgomery. Maud of Green Gables explores their intertwined legacies through commentary\, archival photos\, and moving and memorable quotes. But it is the full-page impressionist oil paintings that bring Maud and Anne to life\, so the reader feels that they have met and have become kindred spirits and bosom friends. \nMaud of Green Gables traces the story of LMM’s début novel from conception to publication and through its meteoric rise to becoming a beloved classic in Canada and internationally. Readers discover LMM’s writing process and her core belief that hard work and perseverance leads to success. Although her life was burdened with mental health challenges\, tragedy\, and gender discrimination\, Montgomery kept her fiction rosy\, celebrating unremarkable characters and revering the natural beauty found in rural settings. Although high-brow Canadian critics ridiculed this ‘sugary’ style\, by the end of the the century LMM was voted Canada’s most influential writer; the L. M. Montgomery Institute was founded to study her life’s work. This biography was meticulously researched and is endorsed by the Montgomery heirs. The University of Guelph is exhibiting the book art and reference material from the L. M. Montgomery archives until November 30th .\nJanet Wilson is the illustrator of over 50 books for children\, including In Flanders Fields: The Story of the Poem by John McCrae (Linda Granfield) and the author of eight non-fiction books. She is also a fine artist. She lives in Eden Mills\, Ontario. \nThe exhibition opens on Monday Oct. 7th on the main floor of the University of Guelph McLaughlin Library\,  50 Stone Rd East. \nIt’s open during library hours: https://cal.lib.uoguelph.ca/hours
