DESCRIPTION:In How We Used To Feel\, Jen Prior builds a room at the threshold between memory and longing; painting the body as shelter\, nature as witness\, and light as the oldest form of belonging. \nLarge immersive works rendered in luminous washes and primitive mark\, her figures do not perform emotion\, they pull it out from the viewer. \nThese are feelings that are waiting to be remembered. \nThe opening reception is April 8th from 6-9pm\, and the exhibition will be up for display from April 8th to the end of May. Opening night will be an immersive experience for the community with sounds\, feelings\, sculptural works and large paintings you can immerse yourself into.

SUMMARY:Standing Wave — An installation by Jenn E. Norton
DESCRIPTION:Standing Wave is a multichannel installation that draws upon natural phenomena\, such as cloud formations\, paired with pareidolia and surrealist imagery to explore emotional and mental states of being. The title derives from the phenomenon of clouds forming above mountains\, known as standing wave clouds or lenticular clouds\, which indicate that rain is imminent. Observers often mistake these clouds for UFOs because of their smooth\, saucer-like shapes. A standing wave is a vibrational pattern that occurs when two waves oscillate at the same frequency and amplitude but move in opposite directions\, interfering with one another. At certain points\, the amplitude is zero; at others\, it reaches its maximum. Norton employs this occurrence as a metaphor in a long-form animation in which clouds transform and morph through representations of places\, people\, animals\, and objects\, as a rolling thought process of hypnagogic visions.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Ed Video for a screening of Celestial Queer: The Life\, Work\, and Wonder of James MacSwain a documentary feature film. There will be a Q&A with the film’s directors Eryn Forster and Sue Johnson after the screening. \nPWYC entry ($5.00 suggested) — NOTAFLOF \nSynopsis: Equal parts art project\, history lesson\, and whimsy\, Celestial Queer: The Life\, Work\, and Wonder of James MacSwain offers a portrait of an artist who defied convention for a life lived on his own terms. Directors Eryn Foster and Sue Johnson spent a decade checking in with the witty\, erudite MacSwain as he moved about his life in north end Halifax\, returned to his tiny rural hometown of Amherst\, Nova Scotia—where he grew up\, unable to pass for straight\, in the 1950s—and discussed his lifelong\, wildly inventive art practice. The playful\, queer work is cut out\, glued together\, and sung into intricate collages\, analogue films combining handmade animation with documentary and provocative exhibitions. Johnson and Foster\, who knew MacSwain for decades until his death in 2025\, combine myriad formats in the production (including 16mm\, Super-8\, and digital video) for an intimate patchwork celebration reflective of their subject’s own body of work. Celestial Queer now stands as an elegy for a man who was defiantly original\, internationally renowned\, and an icon of artistic integrity. James MacSwain lived how he wanted—unabashed\, uncompromising\, and unforgettable.

DESCRIPTION:Ed Video Media Arts Centre is pleased to host a screening of Endless Cookie\, the animated documentary by Seth and Peter Scriver at the GYMC. This screening is presented in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Guelph. \nPWYC entry ($5.00 suggested) — NOTAFLOF \nEndless Cookie is an imaginatively animated family portrait that explores the contrasting upbringings between two half-brothers\, one white and one Indigenous\, in a humorous oral history. As they reminisce into the recording microphone\, the threads of their stories are punctuated\, interrupted\, or else hijacked by charismatic (and humorously animated) members of the extended family\, including nine kids and ten dogs\, who add to the narrative by indulging in their own reveries. The result is an exploration of identity\, race\, and Indigenous resistance to colonization within a First Nations community; an impressionistic and often surreal depiction of family; and a lived-in documentary of the creative process. \nThere will be a Q&A with the directors Seth and Peter Scriver following the screening.
