DESCRIPTION:Join us at Ed Video for a screening of Celestial Queer: The Life\, Work\, and Wonder of James MacSwain a documentary feature film. There will be a Q&A with the film’s directors Eryn Forster and Sue Johnson after the screening. \nPWYC entry ($5.00 suggested) — NOTAFLOF \nSynopsis: Equal parts art project\, history lesson\, and whimsy\, Celestial Queer: The Life\, Work\, and Wonder of James MacSwain offers a portrait of an artist who defied convention for a life lived on his own terms. Directors Eryn Foster and Sue Johnson spent a decade checking in with the witty\, erudite MacSwain as he moved about his life in north end Halifax\, returned to his tiny rural hometown of Amherst\, Nova Scotia—where he grew up\, unable to pass for straight\, in the 1950s—and discussed his lifelong\, wildly inventive art practice. The playful\, queer work is cut out\, glued together\, and sung into intricate collages\, analogue films combining handmade animation with documentary and provocative exhibitions. Johnson and Foster\, who knew MacSwain for decades until his death in 2025\, combine myriad formats in the production (including 16mm\, Super-8\, and digital video) for an intimate patchwork celebration reflective of their subject’s own body of work. Celestial Queer now stands as an elegy for a man who was defiantly original\, internationally renowned\, and an icon of artistic integrity. James MacSwain lived how he wanted—unabashed\, uncompromising\, and unforgettable.

SUMMARY:Standing Wave — An installation by Jenn E. Norton
DESCRIPTION:Standing Wave is a multichannel installation that draws upon natural phenomena\, such as cloud formations\, paired with pareidolia and surrealist imagery to explore emotional and mental states of being. The title derives from the phenomenon of clouds forming above mountains\, known as standing wave clouds or lenticular clouds\, which indicate that rain is imminent. Observers often mistake these clouds for UFOs because of their smooth\, saucer-like shapes. A standing wave is a vibrational pattern that occurs when two waves oscillate at the same frequency and amplitude but move in opposite directions\, interfering with one another. At certain points\, the amplitude is zero; at others\, it reaches its maximum. Norton employs this occurrence as a metaphor in a long-form animation in which clouds transform and morph through representations of places\, people\, animals\, and objects\, as a rolling thought process of hypnagogic visions.

DESCRIPTION:In How We Used To Feel\, Jen Prior builds a room at the threshold between memory and longing; painting the body as shelter\, nature as witness\, and light as the oldest form of belonging. \nLarge immersive works rendered in luminous washes and primitive mark\, her figures do not perform emotion\, they pull it out from the viewer. \nThese are feelings that are waiting to be remembered. \nThe opening reception is April 8th from 6-9pm\, and the exhibition will be up for display from April 8th to the end of May. Opening night will be an immersive experience for the community with sounds\, feelings\, sculptural works and large paintings you can immerse yourself into.

We want to celebrate with you! \nWhen: Saturday\, November 22\, 2025\, 7pm (programming to begin at 7:30pm) \nWhere: GAC’s new home in Old Quebec Street Shoppes. \nWhy should you come: GAC wouldn’t exist without an arts community to serve\, so we’d like to celebrate with the people who have inspired us for 50 years. There’s also a chance that GAC has supported you in your Guelph arts life\, whether that’s as an organization that got its start with support from GAC many years ago\, or as an individual who has shown in our gallery space\, received an award\, participated in our mentorship program or Art on the Street\, or any other things over the past 50 years. \nWe’re also unveiling the new “Sally Wismer Gallery” that night\, named after GAC’s longtime Executive Director\, volunteer and friend\, so maybe you’d like to come and celebrate that too. \nBasically\, if you love the arts\, you love our community\, and you love a chance to gather with friends in the sector\, this is the place for you. \nWe’re calling the event “folk formal”\, meaning all are welcome to come as formally (or informally) dressed as they’d like\, and the night’s program will feature dance\, spoken word/performance arts\, and musical performances\, video screenings\, as well as a chance for attendees to participate in a community craft project (beading) and a community literature project\, where they will be encouraged to write down their favourite Guelph arts memories from the past 50 years with the intention of publishing a keepsake book. \nAttendees may enjoy beverages from a cash bar and mocktail bar\, and snacks will be served. \nThere will be an in-person 50/50 raffle at the event\, and people may also make an optional donation when they RSVP to attend (guelpharts.ca/gacgac)\, or contribute to GAC’s ongoing donation appeal online by visiting guelpharts.ca/about/donate. \nWe’re so grateful to all of you who have shaped GAC over the past 50 years\, and who will continue to shape us through the next 50. SUMMARY:Dave Riedstra - Folds in Our Unfolding Trajectories
DESCRIPTION:September 27 – October 12 2025 \nOpening Reception: Saturday September 27\, 2-6pm \nDave Riedstra is a Guelph-based artist who works with quiet sound. Folds in Our Unfolding Trajectories is a sound installation in which hanging wooden forms resonate with the acoustic space and ongoing activity of the Guelph Youth Music Centre atrium. Sounds and movement in the space interact with the position of the hanging objects\, changing the patterns of resonance that ring out through their quiet feedback. Audio processing monitors these changes and incorporates their movement into its own generative system\, further interacting with the sound. Gently incorporating human\, arboreal\, machine\, and other processes and histories into a mixture of present sound\, Folds in… weaves its own trajectory among those in the atrium’s ecosystem. \nThis installation is proudly presented in partnership with Ed Video Media Arts Centre and the Guelph Youth Music Centre as part of Ontario Culture Days\, Canada’s annual celebration of arts\, culture and heritage. The GYMC’s 2nd floor Atrium is physically accessible by elevator. \nThe artist acknowledges the support of the Guelph Arts Council in the development of this work.

SUMMARY:Wallflower Paintings by Corine van Hoeve
DESCRIPTION:Based in Dundas\, Ontario\, Corine began actively drawing and painting in mid-career after taking courses at the Dundas Valley School of Art (DVSA). Having previously obtained degrees from the University of Guelph\, Western University\, and University of Toronto\, she has\, at different times\, worked in finance and education as well as project management. When not out painting or sketching from life or en plein air\, Corine works from her studio at the Cotton Factory in Hamilton\, Ontario. \nInstagram: @cvanhoeve\nWebsite: cvanhoeve.ca\nEmail: cvanhoeve@gmail.com \nWhile artwork is made to be viewed and commented upon\, a ‘wallflower’ is\, by definition\, the opposite. It describes an individual who\, though present at parties and gatherings\, actively avoids direct connection with others. My paintings embody this duality: encouraging people to look while at the same time not necessarily returning the gaze. On another level\, they are studies in observation\, perhaps a little like a wallflower might carefully scrutinize who’s the life of the party from the corner of the room. SUMMARY:I am a Handyman | Hal Fortin
DESCRIPTION:What utility can we find in vestiges of the past? This question shapes Hal Fortin’s interdisciplinary practice and its distinct sculptural language\, punctuated by humour\, dream logic\, and the rhythms of domestic labour. Working with second-hand materials that are both inherited and found\, Fortin moves fluidly between repurposing originals into sculptures and reproducing them through printmaking. Responding to surfaces marked by time and absence—stained\, mended\, cleaned\, sanded\, shedding\, scraped\, pierced\, and peeling—the exhibition repositions objects as sites where histories accumulate\, revealing both care and neglect. \nAn assemblage of unstable forms\, the would-be furnishings and tools that comprise I am a Handyman are as strange as they are familiar. While they relate to the body at the domestic scale\, they unsettle expectations of function\, deflating under the pressure of usefulness. SUMMARY:The Weight of Stains\, The Wait of Time | Stephanie Fortin
DESCRIPTION:At the heart of Stephanie Fortin’s practice is an ethical inquiry: is it necessary—or responsible—to aestheticize waste in the context of global exploitation and climate change? Engaging with forms and sites at the fringes of development—from the trees of urban forests to the industrial ruins of salvage yards—she examines how their surfaces reveal the entanglement of human activity and ecological systems. During the summer of 2024\, Fortin developed her approach in situ at a wrecking yard\, “recovering” rusted car hoods through a distinctive transfer process. Working with discarded vehicles\, she placed reclaimed silk over the corroded metal\, applying acetic acid. As the reaction unfolded overnight\, rust—acting as both residue and pigment—was lifted onto the textile. \nAiming beyond documentation\, Fortin’s materials engage with time\, climate\, and intervention\, exposing the socio-political histories embedded within them. The resulting images bear traces of decay and transformation\, making visible the residues of extraction and consumption. Throughout her work\, materiality\, pigment\, and process converge to confront the affective potential of such material encounters\, drawing attention to the subconscious and visceral responses they evoke. In doing so\, she challenges viewers to reconsider how spaces and objects deemed obsolete continue to shape both the present and future. \nClick here for more info.

DESCRIPTION:New works from Paige Bromby at 3rd Floor Gallery. \nSee the exhibition from March 17-April 19.\nGallery Hours: Monday – Friday\, 3pm – 5pm & Saturday\, 12pm – 5pm \nPaige Bromby is an emerging artist and community facilitator based in Fergus Ontario\, on the traditional lands of the Petun\, Anishinaabeg\, Haudenosaunee\, Attiwonderonk\, and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Working primarily in painting and drawing\, Bromby explores her relationship to the land in a digital age. \nBromby creates paintings that explore the recording\, translation and filtering of the landscape through both artist and technology. Working from her own photographs Bromby breaks down her images through digital manipulations and layered composition\, she pursues a translation with each individual brush stroke. Initially maintaining a strong connection to the screen\, eventually the image is abandoned and she begins relying on reveries and instinct to find the landscape in a middle ground between artist and technology.
