SUMMARY:Glass Walls: An Animal's Experience
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition is a collection of works Maria has produced during her investigation of the relationship between humans and animals in the 21st century. She uses confrontational and explicit imagery to explore topics such as animal endangerment\, deforestation\, animal agriculture\, and more. Through her body of work\, she hopes to start difficult conversations about morals and how each of our actions are impacting the Earth. \nMaria Melito is an Rockwood-based animal rights artist. She grew up on a farm\, which from a young age instilled in her a love for animals and a passion for animal rights activism. Through painting and drawing\, she aims to give a voice to the voiceless and shed light on the devastating reality for animals on this planet. She completed her Studio Art studies at the University of Guelph in 2019 and has been working out of her studio in Rockwood. \n‘Glass Walls: An Animal’s Experince’ with run August 1st through to August 12th (Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm). Artists were invited to submit up to four original miniature prints in any printmaking medium or combination of mediums for consideration by a panel of three jurors: \nDAVID BOBIER\, Media Artist\, Curator\, Founder and Director – VibraFusionLab \nCASSANDRA GETTY\, Curator of Art\, Museum London \nJENN LAW\, Artist and Co-founder and Editor of Arts + Letters press \n After a challenging jurying process\, 95 works by 60 artists were selected for the final exhibition\, as well as First\, Second\, and Third prize winners and three Honourable Mentions. These prize winners will be announced at the Virtual Opening Reception being held on August 20. \n\nA full-colour exhibition catalogue has been published to commemorate the exhibition. SUMMARY:Culture Days: Reshaping Ruins presented by Guelph’s Artists in Residence
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Goldie Mill Ruins brought to life through light\, art\, and sound! Reshaping Ruins is an interactive art project that nurtures the community’s connection between the historic past and vibrant present of Goldie Mill Ruins. The project will reanimate Goldie Mill by bringing community-made visual art\, poetry\, and music into the space. \nThe project began with a call for poetry\, with the winning submission by Jeremy Luke-Hill being used as the text for a choral composition\, based on the creative prompt “How does it feel to experience an old space in a new light?” Local singers of all experience levels were invited to an interactive workshop where they learned\, performed\, and recorded the choir piece. The choral recordings were then manipulated into a more abstract\, ambient track to be played during the exhibition to inspire the visual art component. \nThe culminating exhibition will feature collaborative painting projections\, light\, and sound. The projection will consist of abstract and gestural painting\, paired with video footage of life in Guelph. The collaborative painting will mix with the music\, and animate the sounds flowing through the space\, while the videos will highlight the movements of people and nature in Guelph bringing the motion of life into the ruins. The works will be projected in real-time as the audience interacts with the space\, casting shadows onto the old building and bringing it to life with movement. \nThis project is created by Guelph’s 2022 Artists in Residence – Sophia Chilton\, Caleb Bray\, and Silas Chinsen.

DESCRIPTION:Showing October 24th to November 7th 2022 at 84 Wyndham Street N\, Guelph ON N1H 4E8 \n“Presently\, my practice revolves around prints that are created by layering and editing effects in Photoshop that are shaped by sketchbook drawings with found photographs. This sort of work emerged out of an Undergraduate project in which we were assigned to create laser engraved woodcuts with halftone pictures. Since drawing has long been central to my practice\, I have become increasingly invested in layering\, copying and erasure as strategies to think about how photographs can be used as a source for mark-making. The photos that I used are sourced from family photos in physical albums\, smart devices\, USBs and external hard drives. My selection process entails identifying subjects whose body\, and occupied space\, reflect the index of layered effects that are implemented. The drawings included in the show at Necessary Arts are intend to investigate scale and an obsessional impulse to build layers of effect without photographs.” \nAbout the Artist \nJustin LaGuff is a Print-based Artist living in Guelph\, ON. They have an OCAD in Graphic Design from Loyalist College and BFA (Honours) in Studio Art with a minor in Art History from the University of Guelph. Their practice makes extensive use of old photographs\, drawings\, and editing software to create complex collages\, zines\, comics\, and prints. LaGuff has exhibited their work in solo and group exhibitions in venues at Zavitz Gallery(Guelph)\, Boarding House Gallery\, The Beguiling\, the Art Gallery of Ontario\, The Button Factory Arts\, and Temporary Collection.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday March 2\, 6:00-7:30 pm \nUniversity of Waterloo Art Gallery\, East Campus Hall 1239 \nPresented by UWAG and UW Fine Arts in conjunction with the UW Sexual Violence Prevention Response Office \nPlease join us for a discussion between visiting artist Laura Magnusson and Meaghan Ross\, Sexual Violence Response Coordinator at the Sexual Violence Prevention Response Office\, University of Waterloo. They will discuss themes relating to trauma and resilience in relation to the artist’s current exhibition I was Wearing Golden Clamshell Earrings on display at the University of Waterloo Art Gallery through March 4. \nIn addition to the discussion there will be a participatory activity inspired by the artist’s drawing installation 74 Minutes. \nRanging from video and sculpture\, to drawing and archival materials\, the artworks in the exhibition collectively express a form of “embodied testimony” based on the artist’s research and her lived experience as a sexual assault survivor. Drawing parallels between her own experience of gender-based violence with the violence routinely inflicted upon the ecology of the ocean floor\, Magnusson’s work invites empathy and contemplation of difficult\, often suppressed topics. \nPlease be advised that this exhibition includes themes of sexual violence and trauma\, which some viewers may find distressing. It may also be the case that some viewers may not notice any impact until after engaging with the exhibit. A list of available resources and supports will be available at the front desk of the gallery\, and we encourage you to consider accessing these as needed. \n  The artist acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. \nLaura Magnusson (she/her) is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in Montreal\, Quebec (Tiohtià:ke/). Magnusson’s current research-creation explores and elucidates felt experiences of trauma through installation\, sculpture\, drawing\, performance\, and video. She is a trained scuba diver who has filmed underwater in Iceland and Mexico\, using the medium water as a site for healing and reconnecting to the body. Magnusson holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from the University of Michigan (2019)\, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Humanities at Concordia University\, funded by a Doctoral Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. \nMeaghan Ross (she/her) is the Sexual Violence Response Coordinator at the Sexual Violence Prevention Response Office\, University of Waterloo; a role through which she supports those impacted by sexual violence to access resources\, and to make decisions for themselves about available options. Meaghan also provides campus-wide education on best practices for receiving disclosures\, unpacking gendered violence\, and creating a consent culture. Working on a post-secondary campus provides Meaghan with a unique opportunity to be a part of\, and motivated by\, ongoing transformative\, collective learning.

SUMMARY:UW Fine Arts MFA Thesis One: Christine De Vuono | Sarah Martin
DESCRIPTION:University of Waterloo Art Gallery\nApril 13-29\nOpening Reception: Thursday April 13\, 5-8 pm \nChristine De Vuono\n\nCare Packages\nCare Packages is a series of textile installations that focus on elements of caregiving: caring for the sick and elderly; caring for those growing into new identities or life situations; and caring for each other in times of distress or loneliness. Sourcing materials from local thrift stores\, I repurpose scrubs worn by caregivers\, tablecloths and lace decorations\, bedsheets\, and pillowcases\, to symbolize our universal need for care\, safety\, and intimacy. As cultural signifiers these second-hand textiles are meant to evoke the feminine\, since the act of caregiving has been traditionally performed by women. Through my artwork I celebrate women of the past and the present\, inviting all\, regardless of gender\, to embrace the labours that lead to a healthy and resilient society. \nChristine De Vuono is a multimedia artist working with drawing\, sculpture\, collage\, installation\, and photography. The materials of each project are chosen specifically to engage viewers in new ways to examine societal norms and values. Her work utilises antiquated practices and mindful labour\, emphasising the disparity between past traditions and present efficiencies. Often focusing on the transitions we face in life\, her work celebrates the needs of the psyche for beloved care and lived beauty. \nSarah Martin\nSomething to soften the blow\nSomething to soften the blow is an installation incorporating textile\, photography\, and video to challenge the horror genre and the concept of the Final Girl. The research leading to this body of work critically explores tropes and traditions of slasher films\, specifically looking at the first victim\, to consider notions of consumption and disposability\, and how this relates to narratives concerning gender\, sexism\, and race. \nSarah Martin works in a photo-based practice to investigate pop culture and media through a critical feminist lens. Themes of her current work consider the vernacular of the horror genre through manipulating archives of film footage and performing death in staged photographs. Alongside her studio work is an active interest in curatorial practices\, most recently curating work at the Homer Watson House and Gallery\, Marilyn I.
