DESCRIPTION:Shaped and inspired by McCrae’s creative expressions\, Witnessing War features drawing\, paintings and sculptures by local and national artists\, spanning 100 years of art as a salve to war. \nThe exhibition includes art works made in response to the six global conflicts in which Canada has fought: \nSouth African War (1899 – 1902) \nFirst World War(1914 – 1918) \nSecond World War (1939 – 1945) \nKorean War (1950-1953) \nPersian Gulf War (1990 -1991) \nAfghanistan War (2001 – 2014). \nWitnessing War also considers responsive works by artists with connections to Guelph and the surrounding region\, who explore themes of human conflict in their art.\nVisit The Guelph Civic Arts Museum now until December 4th to view this exhibit.

DESCRIPTION:“Everything Connected” is a thought-provoking exhibition featuring artists from the Octarine Women Artists’ Collective.  The group explores different aspects of climate change: carbon storage\, forest fires\, ocean health and sea level rise\, endangered animals\, food security and farming practices.  Through their art\, they aim to shed some light on the impact of climate change while respecting the beauty that we all hope to preserve on our planet. \nParticipating artists are Judy French (oil)\, Carol Hughes (watercolour)\, Kim Johnston (water media and oils)\, Dianne Kennedy Cruttenden (weaving)\, Jean Loney (in memory\, glass mosaic)\, Gail Root (oils and chalk pastel)\, M. SUMMARY:SPLENDID ISOLATION at the Elora Centre for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:From May 26th to July 24th\, 2022 I will be having a solo exhibition of my new painting series\, “Splendid Isolation”\, at the Elora Centre of the Arts this summer. \n“Splendid Isolation” is a series of paintings created in my studios in Elmira\, ON and Bear River\, N.S.\, from 2020 to 2021\, exploring themes of isolation and transience during the surreal time of a global pandemic\, unveiling the beauty that arises from creating in solitude. \nI’m very pleased to be exhibiting it in Ontario this year\, particularly since this series was funded by the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund.  Many thanks to the RWAF for funding this project! \nI’m delighted to be showing my work in this beautiful gallery space. The last time I showed my work there (“Solas agus Scath” in 2009) it was a great experience in every way. \nThe opening reception for “Splendid Isolation” will be on Saturday\, May 28th from 2 to 4 p.m.\,  and there will be a traditional Irish music session. \nThere will be a full colour catalogue printed to document the show. \nI hope to see you! \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the 10C Gallery (42 Carden St.)  July 17-28 to view the wonderful paintings by Paige Quinn. \nPaige Quinn is a Guelph-based multidisciplinary artist. Her artwork explores ideas of reuniting and reconnecting to nature through relationships and bodily transformation.  She has recently completed an artist residency at Artscape Gibraltar Point\, and has been working on her artwork in her studio in Guelph.\n\nShow description:\n \nStretched in the Sun is a reflection on personal connection to the earth. Paige explores the relationship between figuration and abstraction\, exposing the under layers of her paintings in a way which invites chance into the artworks. The figures in her paintings are caught in the act of transformation and spiritual catharsis as they move and blend with their background in a process to become closer spiritually with the unknown.

SUMMARY:‘Connection & Response’ Elora Centre for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:New gallery exhibition reminds us that the most important aspect of our lives is\nour sense of connection. The Elora Centre for the Arts is set to launch a new exhibition in their gallery\, by award-winning Northern Ontario artist Bruce Cull. The exhibition\, entitled ‘Connection & Response’ reminds us that we are participants in\, and part of the physical world we inhabit. Bruce Cull’s work expresses his fear of lost connection with each other\, with our environment and a hope that we will rediscover old\, new and better forms of connection.\n“I live in a geographically isolated place” says Cull. “Yet I feel less isolated than many people in crowded urban environments”. Many of the objects incorporated into his work have been salvaged from the land he lives on. His stewardship of the land speaks directly to his connection with it. Bruce Cull lives in rural North East Ontario\, near Earlton in the Timiskaming District\, about 60km south of Kirkland Lake and almost 600km north of Elora. He lives on 200 acres\, in a studio that was once a granary for cattle. Cull has always lived in rural areas\, which as nourished his lifetime environmental awareness that has impacted his artistic practise. As Cull explains\, “we begin our lives connecting to our parent\, our siblings and gradually extending those relationships outward to a greater world of friends\, co-workers and others whom we encounter on this journey. SUMMARY:Glass Walls: An Animal's Experience
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition is a collection of works Maria has produced during her investigation of the relationship between humans and animals in the 21st century. She uses confrontational and explicit imagery to explore topics such as animal endangerment\, deforestation\, animal agriculture\, and more. Through her body of work\, she hopes to start difficult conversations about morals and how each of our actions are impacting the Earth. \nMaria Melito is an Rockwood-based animal rights artist. She grew up on a farm\, which from a young age instilled in her a love for animals and a passion for animal rights activism. Through painting and drawing\, she aims to give a voice to the voiceless and shed light on the devastating reality for animals on this planet. She completed her Studio Art studies at the University of Guelph in 2019 and has been working out of her studio in Rockwood. \n‘Glass Walls: An Animal’s Experince’ with run August 1st through to August 12th (Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm). SUMMARY:Culture Days: Reshaping Ruins presented by Guelph’s Artists in Residence
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Goldie Mill Ruins brought to life through light\, art\, and sound! Reshaping Ruins is an interactive art project that nurtures the community’s connection between the historic past and vibrant present of Goldie Mill Ruins. The project will reanimate Goldie Mill by bringing community-made visual art\, poetry\, and music into the space. \nThe project began with a call for poetry\, with the winning submission by Jeremy Luke-Hill being used as the text for a choral composition\, based on the creative prompt “How does it feel to experience an old space in a new light?” Local singers of all experience levels were invited to an interactive workshop where they learned\, performed\, and recorded the choir piece. The choral recordings were then manipulated into a more abstract\, ambient track to be played during the exhibition to inspire the visual art component. \nThe culminating exhibition will feature collaborative painting projections\, light\, and sound. The projection will consist of abstract and gestural painting\, paired with video footage of life in Guelph. The collaborative painting will mix with the music\, and animate the sounds flowing through the space\, while the videos will highlight the movements of people and nature in Guelph bringing the motion of life into the ruins. The works will be projected in real-time as the audience interacts with the space\, casting shadows onto the old building and bringing it to life with movement. \nThis project is created by Guelph’s 2022 Artists in Residence – Sophia Chilton\, Caleb Bray\, and Silas Chinsen.

This body of work aims to provide the viewer with a new way of perceiving the world by sharing some geomorphic processes and landscapes through the lens of printmaking and photography.

DESCRIPTION:Showing October 24th to November 7th 2022 at 84 Wyndham Street N\, Guelph ON N1H 4E8 \n“Presently\, my practice revolves around prints that are created by layering and editing effects in Photoshop that are shaped by sketchbook drawings with found photographs. This sort of work emerged out of an Undergraduate project in which we were assigned to create laser engraved woodcuts with halftone pictures. Since drawing has long been central to my practice\, I have become increasingly invested in layering\, copying and erasure as strategies to think about how photographs can be used as a source for mark-making. The photos that I used are sourced from family photos in physical albums\, smart devices\, USBs and external hard drives. My selection process entails identifying subjects whose body\, and occupied space\, reflect the index of layered effects that are implemented. The drawings included in the show at Necessary Arts are intend to investigate scale and an obsessional impulse to build layers of effect without photographs.” \nAbout the Artist \nJustin LaGuff is a Print-based Artist living in Guelph\, ON. They have an OCAD in Graphic Design from Loyalist College and BFA (Honours) in Studio Art with a minor in Art History from the University of Guelph. Their practice makes extensive use of old photographs\, drawings\, and editing software to create complex collages\, zines\, comics\, and prints. LaGuff has exhibited their work in solo and group exhibitions in venues at Zavitz Gallery(Guelph)\, Boarding House Gallery\, The Beguiling\, the Art Gallery of Ontario\, The Button Factory Arts\, and Temporary Collection.
