DESCRIPTION:Headwaters Arts is excited to present its Lineup of Events for the 2023 Fall Festival which kicks off on Thursday nite\, September 14\, 2023 from 6:00pm – 10:00 pm with the Opening Soiree of the Fall Festival Juried Art Show and Sale at the Alton Mill Arts Centre in Alton. It’s an evening of art\, where we unveil the 80 works of art on exhibit and for sale by the 68 accepted artists from across Ontario who have created a diverse selection of subject matter and mediums including: oil\, watercolour\, and acrylic painting; soft pastel\, mixed media\, cold wax\, pencil\, sculpture/soapstone/wire/metal\, wood\, blown glass\, pencil\, encaustic\, photography\, textiles/fibre and clay.  \nA “Wow” opportunity to meet the artists\, support the arts\, enjoy fabulous tastes and cool refreshments by Gregory’s catering\, meet new friends to engage in good conversation and tap your foot to the the jazzy music by The Sidemen. Added excitement to the eventing includes presentations of The Headwaters Arts 2023 Student Scholarship Award and the Juror Awards to the prize winning artists chosen by our 2023 jurors\, Judy Daley and David Scott Armstrong. We have got all the ingredients that promises to be an evening to remember! Tickets are $35 plus HST and include one free bar ticket and food. DESCRIPTION:The Emergence of a New Field of Interdisciplinary Inquiry\n\nOctober 16–21\, 2023\nMassey Hall\, University of Guelph \nImprovising Communities: A Retrospective Exhibition marks the celebration of a significant milestone in the emerging field of Critical Studies in Improvisation.  \nThe founding of the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) at the University in Guelph was facilitated by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Grant\, awarded in 2012. The Partnership Grant set in motion a decade of robust research and creative outputs generated by a team of scholars\, researchers\, community partners\, and arts practitioners on a local\, national\, and international scale.  \nThis exhibition illustrates the formalization of improvisation as a field of academic inquiry over the ten+ year period of the SSHRC Partnership Grant in which the institute was named (2012 to 2022) and narrates how IICSI has evolved into a central source for the collection and dissemination of research on the social implications of improvisational practices.   \nImprovising Communities invites you to explore\, inquire\, investigate\, and play with a curated selection of sample projects generated by IICSI’s network during this extended period\, from practice-based community programming to accessible new media technologies. The exhibition encourages you to consider one of IICSI’s central research questions: can improvisation be a vehicle for positive social change?  \nThis exhibition takes places October 16–21\, 2023 in Massey Hall\, at the University of Guelph. \n  \nThe Hand You Are Dealt: Improvising the Archive\nIn late 2022\, IICSI approached Studio Oleomingus\, a partner on their new SSHRC grant “Improvising Futures\,” about creating a video game which showcases the last ten years of IICSI’s research findings. Enthusiastic and up for the task\, Studio Oleomingus and IICSI set to work to determine the format\, content\, and technical specifications of the game\, meeting monthly with an advisory committee to talk through ideas\, troubleshoot potential issues\, and narrow in on a delightful player experience.\nAfter almost a full year of collaboration\, what emerges is a freeform digital toy: a collection of playing cards that contain within them a variety of media\, including audio tracks\, documentaries\, short films\, photographs\, recorded performances\, artwork\, and more\, from different research and creative outputs generated by IICSI and their network over the past decade. We proudly present to you\, The Hand You Are Dealt: Improvising the Archive. \nHosted on your web browser\, the game is accessible to anyone with an internet connection\, and it invites players to discover the intricacies of IICSI’s diverse array of researchers\, partners\, and community organizations\, all while learning a little bit about the institute’s research and activities.  \nIICSI and Studio Oleomingus hope the game will be as fun to play as it is informative\, and hope the game leads to a wider conversation about improvisation in the exploration of digital archives and interactive art. \nThe video game will premiere at our exhibition opening night\, on Monday\, October 16 at 7 pm at Massey Hall\, University of Guelph. \nExhibition Schedule\nMonday\, October 16\n7–9 pm | Opening Reception \nJoin IICSI for the opening reception of Improvising Communities: A Retrospective Exhibition at Massey Hall\, University of Guelph! The exhibit features works by 60 young photographers who have participated in Focus on Nature school workshops and camps in Guelph and Wellington County. \n“I’m inspired by the magical images created by local youth as part of the Focus on Nature Fresh Perspectives photography exhibit\,” says Mayor Cam Guthrie. “I hope you will join me in exploring these beautiful pieces of art and celebrating the talented artists.” \n“Young people see the world differently than adults and these remarkable images capture their fascination with the natural world in interesting and delightful ways. This exhibit reveals the importance of a healthy child-nature connection. DESCRIPTION:Solo Exhibition by Sophia Oppel presented by Ed Video Media Arts Centre from February 24th – March 22nd. ‘ \n“As biometric capture and datafication are increasingly required to access our digitized surround\, bodies are rendered knowable and transparent by corporate entities. Autoscopy continues Oppel’s investigation into the implications of bodily transparency and the hostile affirmation leveraged by late-stage capitalism. Autoscopy is a spatial video installation\, coalescing around a terminal built to replicate the shape of a commercial 3D scanning booth\, and affixed with laser-cut 2-way mirror. The projected imagery of two videos refract through this mirrored enclosure\, oscillating between portrayals of a body as a faulty collection of 3D scans and CGI anatomical models in varying states of layered visibility. In a narrative voice-over that merges intimate poesis with body horror\, the process of being 3D scanned is described as erotic\, invasive\, and yet depersonalizing.”

DESCRIPTION:Launching the ArtsEverywhere festival organized and presented by Musagetes\, join the artists of the El Paso-based What Remains Collective (Dr. Adriana Alvarez\, Iris Morales\, Mabel Weber\, and Monica Lozano) for a guided conversation about documenting the stories of immigrant families as well as the belongings abandoned by individuals over the course of attempts to cross the political border into the United States. \nThe conversation will be followed by an opening reception for the collective’s exhibition What Remains at the Art Gallery of Guelph\, that brings together photography\, video\, and La Trenza – an evolving installation that braids together the belongings and stories of humans in transit\, immigrants\, asylum seekers\, displaced families\, men\, women\, and children who have experienced the journey of crossing a border\, from the heavily militarized to the nearly invisible. For others\, it’s the concept of negative space. And for yet others\, it’s the emotional distance between two people. Drop by Artworks Gallery Guelph (404 York Road) to see how our gallery artists have explored this theme. Patti Collins is presenting her sculptures in light along with highly textured abstract paintings. Scenes of nature and waterscapes have captured the imagination of chalk pastel artist\, Suzanne Wakefield. Nancy Farrell ‘s dramatic abstracts create splashes of colour and movement\, with themes of   outer space and bucolic forest paths. Sharyn Seibert has pushed boundaries by creating a glass and canvas installation as well as reminisces around travel and beloved countries.  We are also excited to showcase the work of Kate Rogers\, our Featured Artist who has installed a series of 6 paintings that investigate her development from childhood beliefs to a present reality of confidence and artistic fervour. In the exhibition\, the software writes on its own\, interfaces invite you to decipher and gesture\, neon signs emit ringing sounds while scrolling antonym pairs\, and speech voices are indigestible data that insist on unlearning. Six works of digital poetry\, that are six modes of perceptual rerouting\, synthesize unstable and untranslatable signifiers that confuse yet connect us. Meanings dangle in the collective dreams we are all in\, where networked machines relay signals from the other side of reality. Lost tongues are found anew as contexts are displaced\, detached\, and divinated from their normalized mundane. \nAbout EveryLetterCyborg Bites Artist Multiple (Edition of 100)\nEveryLetterCyborg Bites are toothy fortune cookies offering cryptic divinations in camouflage as heteroglossia. Each bite is one message that is one tweet from the Twitter bot @qletrcyborg (2018 – 2022). Each tweet contains words sourced from Donna Haraway’s A Cyborg Manifesto (1985) as its corpus. Each message is encrypted with a word randomly generated from an online database of English dictionaries. Each bite casts a post-cyberfeminist spell\, enchanting the already predicted fortune with the allure of data noise and indeterministic codes. \n  \n \nAbout the Artists and Contributors\nXuan Ye 叶轩 works across art\, music and technology. X is interested in making noise as a generative space to evoke the dissonant\, untranslatable and illegible within more-than-human entanglements. They often involve improvisation\, computation and fiction to compose software\, images\, installations\, performances and editions. Their work has appeared at the MOCA Toronto\, UCCA Center for Contemporary Art (Shanghai)\, Venice Architecture Biennale\, Peer to Space (Berlin)\, MUTEK Montreal\, Art Gallery of Ontario\, and Goethe-Institut (Beijing)\, among others. Their multifaceted practice has been featured and reviewed in Canadian Art (Winter 2020)\, ArtAsiaPacific(Issue. 111)\, KUNSTFORUM (Bd. 257)\, Musicworks (Issue. 136)\, and Bandcamp Daily (Best Experimental Albums). \nMujie Li is an experimental writer and a doctoral researcher of digital media and culture at the University of Sussex (United Kingdom). Her research explores how literary aspects (such as writing\, reading\, text and language) in digital and computational technological conditions work together to shape digital aesthetics. She is the author of the novella Mirage Time (2017\, published by Dostoyevsky Wannabe)\, and the article On Digital Aesthetics: Sense-Data and Atmospheric Language (2023\, published by Electronic Book Review). \nJason Doell is vital to Canada’s experimental music/sound community. His interdisciplinary practice includes site/context-specific works\, live coding\, and signal-chain manipulation. Doell has created several significant works\, including “Beneath a Landscape”\, a 30-minute subway piece commissioned by INTERsection festival (CA)\, the interactive online work “TURNONANDBENOTALONE” presented by Music Gallery (CA)\, and the algorithmic piece “tbtastiuth” commissioned by MaerzMusik (DE). Doell has worked with international artists such as Quatuor Bozzini\, Continuum Contemporary Music\, Pulitzer Prize-winner Raven Chacon\, and legendary guitarist John Dieterich. SUMMARY:Summer Season Exhibitions Launch
DESCRIPTION:You are invited! Join us Thursday\, June 13 at 6:30 pm\, for the launch of the Art Gallery of Guelph’s summer season featuring three exhibitions: Yours in Native Spirit: Richard Bedwash\, Catherine Chan: Fractures and Fragments\, and What Remains. All three exhibitions address ideas and issues that are exceptionally timely – from the work of Richard Bedwash\, the Anishinaabe artist tied to murals that remain at risk within the aging structure of the abandoned Guelph Correctional Centre\, to Catherine Chan’s engagement with questions of the Anthropocene\, and the work in What Remains that draws attention to the humanitarian crisis playing out on the southern border of the United States. \nAccessible parking and a limited number of free parking spots are available in the lot beside and behind the gallery with an entrance off Gordon Street\, just north of College Avenue.
