SUMMARY:Wallflower Paintings by Corine van Hoeve
DESCRIPTION:Based in Dundas\, Ontario\, Corine began actively drawing and painting in mid-career after taking courses at the Dundas Valley School of Art (DVSA). Having previously obtained degrees from the University of Guelph\, Western University\, and University of Toronto\, she has\, at different times\, worked in finance and education as well as project management. When not out painting or sketching from life or en plein air\, Corine works from her studio at the Cotton Factory in Hamilton\, Ontario. \nInstagram: @cvanhoeve\nWebsite: cvanhoeve.ca\nEmail: cvanhoeve@gmail.com \nWhile artwork is made to be viewed and commented upon\, a ‘wallflower’ is\, by definition\, the opposite. It describes an individual who\, though present at parties and gatherings\, actively avoids direct connection with others. My paintings embody this duality: encouraging people to look while at the same time not necessarily returning the gaze. On another level\, they are studies in observation\, perhaps a little like a wallflower might carefully scrutinize who’s the life of the party from the corner of the room. SUMMARY:I am a Handyman | Hal Fortin
DESCRIPTION:What utility can we find in vestiges of the past? This question shapes Hal Fortin’s interdisciplinary practice and its distinct sculptural language\, punctuated by humour\, dream logic\, and the rhythms of domestic labour. Working with second-hand materials that are both inherited and found\, Fortin moves fluidly between repurposing originals into sculptures and reproducing them through printmaking. Responding to surfaces marked by time and absence—stained\, mended\, cleaned\, sanded\, shedding\, scraped\, pierced\, and peeling—the exhibition repositions objects as sites where histories accumulate\, revealing both care and neglect. \nAn assemblage of unstable forms\, the would-be furnishings and tools that comprise I am a Handyman are as strange as they are familiar. While they relate to the body at the domestic scale\, they unsettle expectations of function\, deflating under the pressure of usefulness. SUMMARY:The Weight of Stains\, The Wait of Time | Stephanie Fortin
DESCRIPTION:At the heart of Stephanie Fortin’s practice is an ethical inquiry: is it necessary—or responsible—to aestheticize waste in the context of global exploitation and climate change? Engaging with forms and sites at the fringes of development—from the trees of urban forests to the industrial ruins of salvage yards—she examines how their surfaces reveal the entanglement of human activity and ecological systems. During the summer of 2024\, Fortin developed her approach in situ at a wrecking yard\, “recovering” rusted car hoods through a distinctive transfer process. Working with discarded vehicles\, she placed reclaimed silk over the corroded metal\, applying acetic acid. As the reaction unfolded overnight\, rust—acting as both residue and pigment—was lifted onto the textile. \nAiming beyond documentation\, Fortin’s materials engage with time\, climate\, and intervention\, exposing the socio-political histories embedded within them. The resulting images bear traces of decay and transformation\, making visible the residues of extraction and consumption. Throughout her work\, materiality\, pigment\, and process converge to confront the affective potential of such material encounters\, drawing attention to the subconscious and visceral responses they evoke. In doing so\, she challenges viewers to reconsider how spaces and objects deemed obsolete continue to shape both the present and future. \nClick here for more info.

DESCRIPTION:New works from Paige Bromby at 3rd Floor Gallery. \nSee the exhibition from March 17-April 19.\nGallery Hours: Monday – Friday\, 3pm – 5pm & Saturday\, 12pm – 5pm \nPaige Bromby is an emerging artist and community facilitator based in Fergus Ontario\, on the traditional lands of the Petun\, Anishinaabeg\, Haudenosaunee\, Attiwonderonk\, and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Working primarily in painting and drawing\, Bromby explores her relationship to the land in a digital age. \nBromby creates paintings that explore the recording\, translation and filtering of the landscape through both artist and technology. Working from her own photographs Bromby breaks down her images through digital manipulations and layered composition\, she pursues a translation with each individual brush stroke. Initially maintaining a strong connection to the screen\, eventually the image is abandoned and she begins relying on reveries and instinct to find the landscape in a middle ground between artist and technology.

DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Ed Video\, the Art Gallery of Guelph invites you to an engaging evening featuring a screening of Susan Mogul’s 1997 film\, I Stare at You and Dream\, currently showcased alongside a collection of over 80 quillboxes in the exhibition Do You Remember Love. The film highlights the intersecting lives of four individuals\, following the intertwining familial and romantic relationships that explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nEvent Highlights \nCandid Corner Pop-Up: At 6:30 pm\, participate in Ed Video’s interactive video recording station where you can share your thoughts and reflections on relationships\, relationality\, and family\, themes inspired by the film. \nFilm Screening: Stay at 7:30 pm to watch Mogul’s intimate exploration of the lives of four individuals over six months. \nBefore the screening\, program facilitators will prompt participants with thought-provoking questions about relationships\, interpersonal connections\, and family ties. Step up to the mic in the Candid Corner booth and contribute your voice to a live\, collaborative video project. Your reflections will be edited in real-time into a short film\, which will be presented at the end of the evening as a collective community response to I Stare at You and Dream. \nParticipation in the Candid Corner program is optional\, and all are welcome. \nPlease note: \n\nThis event is recommended for adults. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.\nSusan Mogul’s film contains mature themes and conversations.\nRegistration is appreciated but not required. Seating and space are limited\, so early arrival is encouraged.\n\n  \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend.   \nSusan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s\, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives\, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally\, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024\, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum\, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. \nMogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020)\, where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. Her career and contributions are further explored in Women of Vision: Histories in Feminist Film and Video\, where a chapter is devoted to her impactful legacy.

SUMMARY:The Years Of Which I’ve Spoken to you- 10C Gallery
DESCRIPTION:“The Years in which I’ve spoken to you”  is the visual amalgamation of a wordless conversation. A dialogue with creativity itself in which the artist separates themselves and acts as a channel to be spoken through. The works in this series speak to the subtle and constant tension within the human form tirelessly contending with unseen guides\, picking and prying your internal compass. \n As defined by writer Paulo Coelho “Everything is written in the soul of the world and there it will stay forever.” Gabbi’s work in turn seeks to be in dialogue with the soul of the world\, the infinite well of knowledge\, through the language of intuition. She depicts both the cautionary tail of a false prophet\, and the knowledge the soul of the world affords those who will listen. DESCRIPTION:Online class\, live via Zoom\nTuesday\, January 7\, 2025\n6:30 to 8:30 pm EDT\nAges 16+ \nSuitable for artists working in all media – photography\, paint\, drawing\, encaustic and others\, this course focuses on the practicalities of being an artist rather than the process of creating work. We’ll discuss pricing your artwork\, archival printing methods\, finishing and mounting options\, creating limited editions\, submitting to galleries and other ways to show your work such as art fairs\, books or online options. We’ll also touch on applying for grants\, writing an artist’s statement and creating your CV. \nTaught live via Zoom\, students have the opportunity to ask questions through out the class\, and will have access to the class recording for one month.  The course link will be sent via email two days before the class begins. \nFee: $75.00 + HST.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging conversation with pioneering video artist Susan Mogul\, who will discuss her 1997 video I Stare at You and Dream\, featured in AGG’s exhibition Do You Remember Love\, as well as her wider practice. Known for intertwining autobiography with documentary strategies\, Mogul’s work often explores themes of family\, relationships\, and identity through a deeply personal lens. \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend. The narrative is intimate\, intertwining familial and romantic relationships to explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of women’s identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nSusan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s\, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives\, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally\, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024\, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum\, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. \nMogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020)\, where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. In my adult years I got involved in digital marketing\, and in doing so I saw the kind of images people share and look for of Guelph. Do a Google image search for Guelph and you’ll find a flood of the same things: downtown\, the Basilica\, and the university.   \n   My problem is with the fact that this city is so much more than downtown or the university! I didn’t really go to the university or downtown until I was in high school. When I think of the city I think of the visuals of my childhood: playing in the creeks (see: Memories of Running)\, field trips to other schools (see: Where Is Your God Now?)\, visiting deceased family (see: Hope)\, falling asleep at the drive in (see: Mustang) and more before I even discovered the other\, popular\, visual landmarks of the city. \nI wrestled with this show in my mind in how to shoot it. Do I capture according to my memory? Should I shoot just what I see? Can I add my perspective on the history and future of the city?  Is there space for visual commentary? When I look at the collection\, I think I ended up doing all of that.   ​ \n   I want you to see Guelph\, But not just the downtown or university. This show is an invitation for you to explore the city in pictures\, to be curious about their locations\, to add your own narratives to the places\, and to go find not only the nooks that I found\, but the places that bring your own stories\, too. SUMMARY:Maud of Green Gables: How L. M. Montgomery’s Anne Enchanted the World Author/Illustrator: Janet Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Maud of Green Gables is a timely and timeless book created to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of L. M. Montgomery on November 30th\, 2024. \nWhy has Anne Shirley\, the freckled red-headed orphan with a genius for calamities\, enchanted the world so completely? And why has Anne of Green Gables\, a 1908 publication with endearing characters and wholesome family values\, been such a legendary success? Anne remains one of the\nmost loved and recognizable literary characters\, but less is known about her creator\, Lucy Maud Montgomery. Maud of Green Gables explores their intertwined legacies through commentary\, archival photos\, and moving and memorable quotes. But it is the full-page impressionist oil paintings that bring Maud and Anne to life\, so the reader feels that they have met and have become kindred spirits and bosom friends. \nMaud of Green Gables traces the story of LMM’s début novel from conception to publication and through its meteoric rise to becoming a beloved classic in Canada and internationally. Readers discover LMM’s writing process and her core belief that hard work and perseverance leads to success. Although her life was burdened with mental health challenges\, tragedy\, and gender discrimination\, Montgomery kept her fiction rosy\, celebrating unremarkable characters and revering the natural beauty found in rural settings. Although high-brow Canadian critics ridiculed this ‘sugary’ style\, by the end of the the century LMM was voted Canada’s most influential writer; the L. M. Montgomery Institute was founded to study her life’s work. This biography was meticulously researched and is endorsed by the Montgomery heirs. The University of Guelph is exhibiting the book art and reference material from the L. M. Montgomery archives until November 30th .\nJanet Wilson is the illustrator of over 50 books for children\, including In Flanders Fields: The Story of the Poem by John McCrae (Linda Granfield) and the author of eight non-fiction books. She is also a fine artist. SUMMARY:The Landscape is Dead- Anna Gaby-Trotz and Richelle Forsey
DESCRIPTION:Hours are Wednesday – Saturday\, 3pm – 5pm until November 2nd \nCan you (we) save the world by looking? \nThe idea of wilderness – land uncultivated and uninhabited by human beings – raises questions about how much truly natural land is left in a world that values the production of goods over people and the land. Through collage and digital montage of our photographs of agriculture\, land-management\, resource extraction sites\, utilities infrastructure\, the aftermath of forest fires\, icebergs\, development sites\, refuse\, development\, and destruction\, we open up our individual practices to collective thought and authorship through creative play and collaboration used to create this new body of work. \nThe language of hope and despair is woven into this work through screen printed text and images. The camera is a tool of agency and the collaborative process a de-centering of individual artist authorship to prioritize our explorations and the invitation for slow looking. \nHere\, in Wyndham’s 3rd Floor Gallery\, “The Landscape is Dead” reflects the intersection of the landscape and the built environment for contemplation\, to illuminate the complex and troubling questions about human impacts on the natural world.

DESCRIPTION:Headwaters Art is excited to announce the line-up of events for the 28th Annual Fall Festival which opens with the Juried Art Show and Sale on September 18\, 2024 followed by the ticketed Opening Nite Soiree on September 19\, 2024 and our ever popular\, free event\, Jurors Walk. \nJoin 2024 Jurors\, Dr. Shauna McCabe and Mark Fletcher with a walk around the gallery to listen and learn about what impressed them when selecting the over 75+ works of art on exhibit by the 70 artists juried into the 28th Annual Headwaters Arts Juried Art Show & Sale. As an artist or art collector it is a chance to ask questions and learn more about the art world. \nDr. Shauna McCabe is the Director of the Art Gallery of Guelph\, and former Executive Director of the Textile Museum of Canada with more than 15 years experience as an arts administrator\, as well as professor and Canada Research Chair at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. \nPreviously\, she was Director of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and Senior Curator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Prince Edward Island. In 2007\, she was appointed Canada Research Chair in Critical Theory in the Interpretation of Culture\, leading interdisciplinary research and practice at Mount Allison University where she was also Associate Professor. \nMcCabe completed a PhD at the University of British Columbia\, an MA at Simon Fraser University\, and a BA at McGill University. \nMark Fletcher is co-owner of Cloud Gallery and a long-time lover and supporter of the arts. He was the Co-Chair of the Orillia Museum of Art and History for 4 years and Chair of the Orillia Heritage Committee for 8 years. At the Museum he led a push for growth and innovation that included a $2m renovation of the Heritage Building and a restructuring of the organization. His business experience includes working for large Canadian corporations (Bell\, General Motors\, Scotiabank) and innovative marketing agencies (Perennial Inc.). He is now a full-time faculty member at Georgian College in Barrie teaching courses on entrepreneurship and investing. He is married\, a father of 4\, and lives in Orillia. He has organized artist retreats\, bringing together a community of artists at his recreational property in Severn Township\, Rancho Relaxo\, where he supports artist residencies. More recently he is expanding those programs to Snug Harbour on Georgian Bay and beyond with Cloud Gallery. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Headwaters Arts proudly presents the 28th Annual Fall Festival Juried Art Show and Sale celebrating art and creativity with the unveiling of the over 70 original works of art by 75 selected artists. Excellence in art is our mantra and our 2024 Jurors Shauna McCabe and Mark Fletcher certainly delivered on there selections . SUMMARY:Fall 2024 Exhibitions Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, September 12 at 6:30 pm\, for the launch of the Art Gallery of Guelph’s fall season featuring two exhibitions: Do You Remember Love and Some kind of we. Both exhibitions explore themes of identity and connection through diverse artistic practices. Do You Remember Love integrates video and traditional quillwork to examine identity and relationships\, while Some kind of we uses video and print to reflect on trans relationality and solidarity. Curators Maria Hupfield\, Jason Lujan\, and Dallas Fellini will be in attendance alongside artists Cleopatria Peterson and B.G-Osborne. \nAccessible parking and a limited number of free parking spots are available in the lot beside and behind the gallery with an entrance off Gordon Street\, just north of College Avenue. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening party celebrating Entrelazados: Justin Favela and an introduction to the exhibition by the Las Vegas-based visiting artist. Investigating his own heritage and identity as a queer\, Latinx\, Guatemalan-Mexican-American born in the southwestern United States\, Favela’s work remixes popular culture\, lived traditions\, and art history as a way to amplify the interwoven influences on personal and collective experiences. From sculptures to a new site-specific immersive installation\, Favela adapts simple materials like cardboard\, paper\, tape\, and glue to speak to the powerful interwoven legacies that shape one’s everyday existence and how they converge within collective histories of migration and community. \nMarking the first exhibition of Justin Favela’s work in Canada\, all are welcome to this free event; refreshments and a cash bar will be available.
