DESCRIPTION:Headwaters Art is excited to announce the line-up of events for the 28th Annual Fall Festival which opens with the Juried Art Show and Sale on September 18\, 2024 followed by the ticketed Opening Nite Soiree on September 19\, 2024 and our ever popular\, free event\, Jurors Walk. \nJoin 2024 Jurors\, Dr. Shauna McCabe and Mark Fletcher with a walk around the gallery to listen and learn about what impressed them when selecting the over 75+ works of art on exhibit by the 70 artists juried into the 28th Annual Headwaters Arts Juried Art Show & Sale. As an artist or art collector it is a chance to ask questions and learn more about the art world. \nDr. Shauna McCabe is the Director of the Art Gallery of Guelph\, and former Executive Director of the Textile Museum of Canada with more than 15 years experience as an arts administrator\, as well as professor and Canada Research Chair at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. \nPreviously\, she was Director of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and Senior Curator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Prince Edward Island. In 2007\, she was appointed Canada Research Chair in Critical Theory in the Interpretation of Culture\, leading interdisciplinary research and practice at Mount Allison University where she was also Associate Professor. \nMcCabe completed a PhD at the University of British Columbia\, an MA at Simon Fraser University\, and a BA at McGill University. \nMark Fletcher is co-owner of Cloud Gallery and a long-time lover and supporter of the arts. He was the Co-Chair of the Orillia Museum of Art and History for 4 years and Chair of the Orillia Heritage Committee for 8 years. At the Museum he led a push for growth and innovation that included a $2m renovation of the Heritage Building and a restructuring of the organization. His business experience includes working for large Canadian corporations (Bell\, General Motors\, Scotiabank) and innovative marketing agencies (Perennial Inc.). He is now a full-time faculty member at Georgian College in Barrie teaching courses on entrepreneurship and investing. He is married\, a father of 4\, and lives in Orillia. He has organized artist retreats\, bringing together a community of artists at his recreational property in Severn Township\, Rancho Relaxo\, where he supports artist residencies. More recently he is expanding those programs to Snug Harbour on Georgian Bay and beyond with Cloud Gallery. \n  \n

Community is central to Justin Favela’s art practice and the public is invited to join the visiting artist to participate in a collaborative workshop and contribute to murals that will be part of Favela’s vibrant large-scale installation\, Entrelazados\, on view this fall in the vaulted two-storey space of the Art Gallery of Guelph. At the core of Favela’s work is an exploration of his own intersecting identities as a Guatemalan-Mexican-American artist\, adapting and repurposing traditional Mexican or Latin American craft practices\, particularly cartoneria or piñata making. Join us for an afternoon of artmaking and be part of the vivid designs that Favela is creating using everyday materials like paper and glue. All are welcome; no experience necessary. DESCRIPTION:  \nIn gratitude for receiving this year’s Kenny Doren award\, annais linares will mount era of an end\, a newly developed sound and visual installation\, in the Ed Video gallery. Earlier this year\, annais received news that her landlords were returning back to their Guelph home – meaning she would have to move. She arrived at The Ward in September 2020 from California to begin grad school and hardly knew anyone. Since then\, she’s grown to love Guelph and all its beings! This installation is a kiss goodbye to her Johnston house which held her in the darkest of isolation-times\, as well as a goodbye to The Ward\, Guelph\, and all the relationships she made throughout the last four years overall. \nExhibition Reception: Thursday August 22nd\, 7-9pm

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of the exhibition Gravel is the New Gold\, featuring the work of artist Paul Nadeau. Drawing together the visual language of cottage-country ephemera with references to practices of measuring\, mapping\, and surveying\, Nadeau’s hyperreal paintings incorporate trompe l’oeil to underscore a certain perception of the Canadian wilderness that has both depended on and accelerated the continuous dispossession of Indigenous lands for resource extraction and leisure. \nThis exhibition represents the culmination of two years of focused work in the University of Guelph’s Master of Fine Arts program. The Art Gallery of Guelph’s annual exhibitions of graduating MFA students are presented in conjunction with the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph.

DESCRIPTION:Join Guelph’s 2024 Artist in Residence\, Tracey-Mae Chambers\, at the Art Gallery of Guelph to contribute to a community weaving project. Sparking conversations about reconciliation\, her ongoing initiative called #HopeAndHealingCanada has developed through workshops and textile installations across the country since 2021. Add your favorite colour from the materials provided and help weave our community together! Participants can also create a 4-inch round weaving project to take home. \nThis is a drop-in program with no registration required; all necessary materials are provided by the artist. All ages are welcome\, though participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

DESCRIPTION:hot dreams \nAdryn Gibbs\, Eli Nolet \nCurated by Adrien Crossman \nJuly 5th – August 2nd\, 2024 \nEd Video Media Arts Centre\, 404 York Rd\, Guelph\, ON N1E 3H4 \nHours: Monday\, Tuesday\, Thursday and Friday\, 10 am – 5 pm \nOpening Reception:\nFriday\, July 5th\, 2024\, from 7 pm – 9 pm \n  \nhot dreams brings together the work of Ardyn Gibbs and Eli Nolet\, two emerging trans and non binary artists exploring queer affect through new media and materiality. Queer desire\, safety\, memory\, joy\, and visibility exist as throughlines in these works that reach for physical spaces of queer belonging/gathering that have for some only existed as a fantasy or imagining. Employing both physical and digital material references to objects such as chains\, metal piercings\, and the reflective sheen reminiscent of that cast by leather or latex\, the works in hot dreams refer to the queer body – or rather the absence of queer bodies. \nAbout the Artists:\nEli Nolet (they/them) is a queer trans settler-Indigenous artist and arts worker from the occupied territories of the Erie\, Neutral\, Huron-Wendat\, Haudenosaunee\, and Mississaugas (otherwise known as hamilton\, ontario). Eli’s practice explores identity and selfhood through new media activations of static image and text work. Across their practice\, Eli is interested in investigating the many layered histories of queer culture and desire\, and questioning the binaries of visible/invisible\, normative/transgressive. \nArdyn Gibbs (they/them) is a queer and trans\, settler-Indigenous (Mohawk) artist and arts worker located on the territories of the Haudenosaunee\, Anishnaabe\, and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation otherwise known as Hamilton\, ON. Using digital new media technologies Ardyn’s work explores themes of queer futurism\, digital dreaming\, and visibility/legibility of queer bodies in public spaces. Ardyn is passionate about collective dreaming\, placekeeping\, and fostering meaningful connections. \nAdrien Crossman (they/them) is a queer and non-binary white settler artist\, educator\, and curator currently residing on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe in so called Hamilton\, Ontario. They hold an MFA in Visual Art from the University of Windsor (2018)\, and a BFA in Integrated Media with a Minor in Digital and Media Studies from OCAD University (2012). Crossman is interested in the affective qualities of queerness\, investigating how queerness can be felt through specific aesthetics and sensibilities. Adrien co-founded and co-runs the online arts publication off centre and is an Assistant Professor in the School of the Arts at McMaster University. \nAccessibility\nOn the side of the 404 York Rd building\, there is an accessible ramp that leads to the building’s back door. Head straight through the hall to reach Ed Video’s side door. Parking is available along the side of the building. The parking spot closest to the ramp is reserved for those with accessibility needs. In the exhibition\, the software writes on its own\, interfaces invite you to decipher and gesture\, neon signs emit ringing sounds while scrolling antonym pairs\, and speech voices are indigestible data that insist on unlearning. Six works of digital poetry\, that are six modes of perceptual rerouting\, synthesize unstable and untranslatable signifiers that confuse yet connect us. Meanings dangle in the collective dreams we are all in\, where networked machines relay signals from the other side of reality. Lost tongues are found anew as contexts are displaced\, detached\, and divinated from their normalized mundane. \nAbout EveryLetterCyborg Bites Artist Multiple (Edition of 100)\nEveryLetterCyborg Bites are toothy fortune cookies offering cryptic divinations in camouflage as heteroglossia. Each bite is one message that is one tweet from the Twitter bot @qletrcyborg (2018 – 2022). Each tweet contains words sourced from Donna Haraway’s A Cyborg Manifesto (1985) as its corpus. Each message is encrypted with a word randomly generated from an online database of English dictionaries. Each bite casts a post-cyberfeminist spell\, enchanting the already predicted fortune with the allure of data noise and indeterministic codes. \n  \n \nAbout the Artists and Contributors\nXuan Ye 叶轩 works across art\, music and technology. X is interested in making noise as a generative space to evoke the dissonant\, untranslatable and illegible within more-than-human entanglements. They often involve improvisation\, computation and fiction to compose software\, images\, installations\, performances and editions. Their work has appeared at the MOCA Toronto\, UCCA Center for Contemporary Art (Shanghai)\, Venice Architecture Biennale\, Peer to Space (Berlin)\, MUTEK Montreal\, Art Gallery of Ontario\, and Goethe-Institut (Beijing)\, among others. Their multifaceted practice has been featured and reviewed in Canadian Art (Winter 2020)\, ArtAsiaPacific(Issue. 111)\, KUNSTFORUM (Bd. 257)\, Musicworks (Issue. 136)\, and Bandcamp Daily (Best Experimental Albums). \nMujie Li is an experimental writer and a doctoral researcher of digital media and culture at the University of Sussex (United Kingdom). Her research explores how literary aspects (such as writing\, reading\, text and language) in digital and computational technological conditions work together to shape digital aesthetics. She is the author of the novella Mirage Time (2017\, published by Dostoyevsky Wannabe)\, and the article On Digital Aesthetics: Sense-Data and Atmospheric Language (2023\, published by Electronic Book Review). \nJason Doell is vital to Canada’s experimental music/sound community. His interdisciplinary practice includes site/context-specific works\, live coding\, and signal-chain manipulation. Doell has created several significant works\, including “Beneath a Landscape”\, a 30-minute subway piece commissioned by INTERsection festival (CA)\, the interactive online work “TURNONANDBENOTALONE” presented by Music Gallery (CA)\, and the algorithmic piece “tbtastiuth” commissioned by MaerzMusik (DE). Doell has worked with international artists such as Quatuor Bozzini\, Continuum Contemporary Music\, Pulitzer Prize-winner Raven Chacon\, and legendary guitarist John Dieterich. DESCRIPTION:ARTWORKS GALLERY GUELPH \n404 YORK ROAD \nGUELPH\,  ONTARIO \nMAY 6 – JULY 7\, 2024 \nWhat is “the space between”? For some it’s the distance between two objects. For others\, it’s the concept of negative space. And for yet others\, it’s the emotional distance between two people. Drop by Artworks Gallery Guelph (404 York Road) to see how our gallery artists have explored this theme. Patti Collins is presenting her sculptures in light along with highly textured abstract paintings. Scenes of nature and waterscapes have captured the imagination of chalk pastel artist\, Suzanne Wakefield. Nancy Farrell ‘s dramatic abstracts create splashes of colour and movement\, with themes of   outer space and bucolic forest paths. Sharyn Seibert has pushed boundaries by creating a glass and canvas installation as well as reminisces around travel and beloved countries.  We are also excited to showcase the work of Kate Rogers\, our Featured Artist who has installed a series of 6 paintings that investigate her development from childhood beliefs to a present reality of confidence and artistic fervour. This collection  has been one of the most challenging shows to date and we’d love for you to visit.  We are open daily from 10am to 4pm. \n

SUMMARY:Big Ideas Lecture and Exhibition Launch: What Remains
DESCRIPTION:Launching the ArtsEverywhere festival organized and presented by Musagetes\, join the artists of the El Paso-based What Remains Collective (Dr. Adriana Alvarez\, Iris Morales\, Mabel Weber\, and Monica Lozano) for a guided conversation about documenting the stories of immigrant families as well as the belongings abandoned by individuals over the course of attempts to cross the political border into the United States. \nThe conversation will be followed by an opening reception for the collective’s exhibition What Remains at the Art Gallery of Guelph\, that brings together photography\, video\, and La Trenza – an evolving installation that braids together the belongings and stories of humans in transit\, immigrants\, asylum seekers\, displaced families\, men\, women\, and children who have experienced the journey of crossing a border\, from the heavily militarized to the nearly invisible. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition aims to provide an opportunity for artists with old work that is taking up space in their studio\, falls outside of “recency” submission criteria for exhibition opportunities\, or is maybe just a super experimental piece that falls outside of their current body of work that they would like to have the opportunity to sell. \nShow is up March 12th to April 12th\, Tue-Fri 11am to 4pm staff permitting. \nPlease support the local artists in the show by coming out to the closing reception April 4th\, 5 to 7pm.

SUMMARY:Autoscopy Sophia Oppel Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Solo Exhibition by Sophia Oppel presented by Ed Video Media Arts Centre from February 24th – March 22nd. ‘ \n“As biometric capture and datafication are increasingly required to access our digitized surround\, bodies are rendered knowable and transparent by corporate entities. Autoscopy continues Oppel’s investigation into the implications of bodily transparency and the hostile affirmation leveraged by late-stage capitalism. Autoscopy is a spatial video installation\, coalescing around a terminal built to replicate the shape of a commercial 3D scanning booth\, and affixed with laser-cut 2-way mirror. The projected imagery of two videos refract through this mirrored enclosure\, oscillating between portrayals of a body as a faulty collection of 3D scans and CGI anatomical models in varying states of layered visibility. In a narrative voice-over that merges intimate poesis with body horror\, the process of being 3D scanned is described as erotic\, invasive\, and yet depersonalizing.”
