SUMMARY:Reel Stories – Documentary Filmmaking for Youth
DESCRIPTION:This September\, Ed Video launches a new youth program: Reel Stories – Documentary Filmmaking for Youth\, with the support and funding of the J.P. Bickell Foundation. Reel Stories is designed to empower the next generation of storytellers\, giving them the tools and confidence to share their voice with the world. Two separate groups of youth participants (grade 4-8 and grade 9-12) will meet on alternating weeks from 4-6PM to create two short documentaries. Participants will undergo the filmmaking process\, building skills in scriptwriting\, conducting interviews\, camera operation\, lighting\, audio recording and editing under the instruction of Guelph-based filmmaker\, Steve Miller. \n\n\n\n\nSkills in communication\, critical thinking and collaboration will also be developed throughout the program. At the programs’ end in January\, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their completed documentaries for family\, friends and local community members. Reel Stories is more than just a filmmaking course; it’s an experience that equips youth with skills that extend beyond the world of film. \nRegistration for Reel Stories is now open for youth in grades 4-8 and in grades 9-12. Parents and guardians interested in enrolling their children in this free program are encouraged to email workshops@edvideo.org with any questions or accessibility concerns. Spaces are limited\, so early registration is recommended to secure a spot in this innovative and enriching initiative.

SUMMARY:Live Performance & Interactivity in Ableton Live
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Stephen Surlin \nThis intensive explores the creation of interactive and reactive media art using Ableton Live\, a digital music creation and performance program. Intended for intermediate to advanced users of Ableton Live\, this full day intensive will begin with a focus on using Ableton Live’s performance tools and integration with software that can allow the creation of reactive or interactive music\, art installations\, audio generated by dance/movement\, etc. Topics such as how to use Max/MSP and/or Pure Data\, and other technologies like DMX for lighting\, computer vision\, and sensors will be explored. \nParticipants will also have time to develop a performance or interactive piece to present by the end of the intensive. This work can be the beginning of a new interactive artwork or a self-contained experiment to inspire your future work. \nThis workshop requires a laptop with Ableton Live and either Max/MSP or Pure Data. Ed Video has a limited amount of laptops with Ableton Live Intro and Pure Data available for members to use. Non-members may rent a laptop for an additional $10 +HST. \nPlease email workshops@edvideo.org for any questions or accessibility concerns. \nStephen Surlin is an interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and educator. Surlin’s practice includes audio\, visual\, and technology-based theatre production work with Canadian Stage\, Outside the March Theatre Company\, Obsidian Theatre Company\, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre\, and youth education programs with Soulpepper and Toronto Metropolitan University. Surlin’s art and design work often incorporates hardware\, software and wearable sensors that wirelessly connect participants to interactive audio-visual experiences. Examples of this work includes immersive sound design for TOPDOG/UNDERDOG (Canadian Stage)\, the wireless haptic feedback system in No Save Points (Outside the March Theatre Company)\, interactive audio-visual installations at Nuit Blanche (Toronto)\, and outdoor musical theatre at the SummerWorks Festival (Toronto)*.

This workshop will also cover basic lighting practices for stop motion\, and the principle of animation: ease in\, ease out. Gain hands-on experience in bringing toy cars and legos to life! \nParticipants will need a phone or tablet with a stop motion animation app such as iStopMotion or Stop Motion Studio\, and a tripod mount. DSLR or Mirrorless cameras are also an option\, but they must be paired with a computer stop motion program. \nFin Janleigh (she/they) is an award winning Canadian filmmaker with work in both live action and stop motion film. Her work often follows themes of environmentalism\, friendship\, and self-concept. Fin is also a freelance video producer\, a theater lighting designer\, and a podcast producer. SUMMARY:Songbird: an Unconventional Choir by Joni NehRita at Art Not Shame
DESCRIPTION:Art Not Shame is excited to host local musician\, song-writer\, and producer\, Joni NehRita in offering an 8-week community choir workshop called\, Songbird: An Unconventional Choir. \nSongbird will invite community members to participate in the art of choral singing\, regardless of past choral experience\, musical skill or ability. Over the course of 8-weeks\, participants will learn to sing in harmony with others as they explore music that engages with themes of social justice\, equity\, and change and across multiple genres (e.g. pop\, reggae\, calypso\, gospel\, and jazz). NehRita adopts a “Música do Círculo” methodology\, an approach that uses improvisation\, body percussion\, movement and play.  \nCentring inclusivity\, Songbirds is open to people of all genders and uses neutral names for different choral positions (e.g. ‘low\, mid-low\, and high’ instead of ‘bass\, tenor\, and soprano’) to support inclusion. DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Fin Janleigh \nSaturday\, October 19th | 12-3PM \nSunday\, October 20th | 12-3PM \nThis 2-part workshop offers an in-depth exploration of stop-motion animation\, focusing on the advanced technique of Claymation. Topics include animation principles like squash and stretch\, exaggeration\, anticipation\, and arcs\, along with basic facial animation. Hands-on practice will involve animating a clay ball and a blob character. By the end of the workshop\, participants will have created a short character animation piece and will have an animatable character to take home. Previous experience with stop motion animation is recommended. \nClay and materials are included with registration. \nParticipants will need a phone or tablet with a stop motion animation app such as iStopMotion or Stop Motion Studio\, and a tripod mount. DESCRIPTION:Learn the fundamentals of operating a camera for the purpose of capturing video. \nUsing a mix of lecture\, demonstration and hands-on learning experience\, this session will introduce participants to key concepts needed to properly operate a camera for the purposes of capturing video. This workshop will provide information that can be used in the operation of almost any modern video camera or video-capable still camera/device. Highly recommended for anyone who is starting out in video. This is a good primer for those who want to get serious about video\, but will also be helpful for hobbyists. Participants are welcome and encouraged to bring their own camera if they have one. \nTopics include:\n•Types of cameras and the qualities of each\n•The effect of frame rates\n•Aperture\, Shutter Speed\, ISO and Gain\n•Colour Temperature/White Balance and how it affects your image\n•Resolution: HD vs 4K\, and what it actually means\n•Codec basics (H.264 vs MOV\, etc)\n•Camera audio basics\n•Setup Demonstration
