A handmade doll is a powerful way to help yourself or another through a transition or to provide good wishes and support for any occasion. \nThe only skill required is very basic hand sewing. All materials will be provided\, however\, please feel free to bring anything with you you’d like to include. \n*We are committed to maintaining equitable access to our programs. While we strive to make all of our programs free of charge\, we do not always have the resources to do so. SUMMARY:Introduction to Handbuilding Techniques with Noni of NO CRAFTS
DESCRIPTION:Join No Crafts\, a skilled QBIPOC ceramic artist\, for a dynamic series of ceramic handbuilding workshops! This series is perfect for all skill levels\, from beginners to experienced artists\, and focuses on both structured projects or open studio time to explore your creativity. \nThe workshop series consists of two classes. You can attend one workshop for $35 or both for $60. \nSession 1: Introduction to Handbuilding Techniques will provide an overview of basic handbuilding techniques including pinch\, coil\, and slab building. Noni of No Crafts will demonstrate each technique and participants will have time to practice. You will create simple forms such as bowls\, cups\, and plates; decorate with an underglaze; and have time for an open discussion and Q&A with the instructor. \nParticipants will be able to pick up their finished piece after they have been fired twice and the instructor has applied a final layer of clear glaze; approximately 3-4 weeks. \nAll materials are included. Suitable for all levels. SUMMARY:Intuitive Weaving
DESCRIPTION:During the darker winter days\, it’s nice to have a meditative art practice to turn to to help you relax and practice mindfulness. Weaving can have a tangible outcome (like a wall hanging or placemat)\, or be purely for relaxation and play – without the pressure of outcomes. Either way\, it becomes a transcript of your mood and imagination. \nIn this 2 hour class\, we will learn the basics of weaving with little to no financial investment. Using a cardboard loom that we make ourselves and the provided materials\, we will go over basic weaving techniques. \nWe will let the materials guide us and see where they take us. Our intuition will lead us while we slow down our thoughts and enjoy the creative process. No prior weaving experience necessary!

SUMMARY:Monotype Printmaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to plan\, design\, create\, and print a monotype! Use new materials and learn a variety of techniques to create your desired image\, then watch the magic of the printing press take place as you pull your print through. \nMonotype is a process of printmaking created by drawing or painting on a matrix (plexiglass or other smooth surface) which is then printed using an intaglio press to create a single (mono) print. It is a unique type of printmaking as it’s the only form that creates a single image instead of a full edition of the same print. How about night photography? This full-day workshop will show you how to use the manual exposure mode to make creative choices that the auto settings won’t allow. We’ll build on the skills learned in my Introductory Photo Skills class and explore the advanced features of your camera\, including manual exposures\, the RAW file and advanced metering techniques for difficult or low lighting conditions. Suitable for DSLR cameras or advanced mirrorless cameras that offer manual controls. We will be shooting in class\, so bring your camera with lots of memory card space and a fully charged battery. \nFee: $175.00 + HST.

There will be guided demos every step of the way\, teaching techniques to draw and problem-solve quickly\, lean into intuition\, and capture moving shape\, form\, and light. \nJoin us for this rare\, stripped back rehearsal setting and artistic event. Come to draw\, or just enjoy the sweet sounds of the band. This event has a sliding scale ticket system\, please pay what you can and support local artists! \nAll materials will be supplied\, no experience necessary. Their sound is a synthesis of influences like Stevie Wonder\, Hiatus Kaiyote\, Amy Winehouse\, Daft Punk\, and Erykah Badu\, making the music compelling and curious with lyrics from the heart. CBC’s Laila Biali aptly describes their sound as “Music that exists in a sonic world of its own”.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop teaches participants essential tools and creative techniques for sound design using Ableton. \nInstructed by Stephen Surlin\, this workshop reviews tools for sound design that can be used in film\, theatre\, games\, and sound effects\, using experimental features of Ableton. This includes the use of effects and instruments as well as the use of free plug-ins to create sound that can be modified in Ableton. These plugins use granular\, spectral and modular synthesis. Some experience with Ableton Live is recommended. \nParticipants will need a laptop with Ableton Live. Ed Video has a limited amount of laptops with Ableton Live Intro available for members to use. DESCRIPTION:Art Not Shame is excited to host local musician\, song-writer\, and producer\, Joni NehRita in offering an 8-week community choir workshop called\, Songbird: An Unconventional Choir. \nSongbird will invite community members to participate in the art of choral singing\, regardless of past choral experience\, musical skill or ability. Over the course of 8-weeks\, participants will learn to sing in harmony with others as they explore music that engages with themes of social justice\, equity\, and change and across multiple genres (e.g. pop\, reggae\, calypso\, gospel\, and jazz). NehRita adopts a “Música do Círculo” methodology\, an approach that uses improvisation\, body percussion\, movement and play.  \nCentring inclusivity\, Songbirds is open to people of all genders and uses neutral names for different choral positions (e.g. ‘low\, mid-low\, and high’ instead of ‘bass\, tenor\, and soprano’) to support inclusion. DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Stephen Surlin \nThis intensive explores the creation of interactive and reactive media art using Ableton Live\, a digital music creation and performance program. Intended for intermediate to advanced users of Ableton Live\, this full day intensive will begin with a focus on using Ableton Live’s performance tools and integration with software that can allow the creation of reactive or interactive music\, art installations\, audio generated by dance/movement\, etc. Topics such as how to use Max/MSP and/or Pure Data\, and other technologies like DMX for lighting\, computer vision\, and sensors will be explored. \nParticipants will also have time to develop a performance or interactive piece to present by the end of the intensive. This work can be the beginning of a new interactive artwork or a self-contained experiment to inspire your future work. \nThis workshop requires a laptop with Ableton Live and either Max/MSP or Pure Data. Ed Video has a limited amount of laptops with Ableton Live Intro and Pure Data available for members to use. SUMMARY:Reel Stories – Documentary Filmmaking for Youth
DESCRIPTION:This September\, Ed Video launches a new youth program: Reel Stories – Documentary Filmmaking for Youth\, with the support and funding of the J.P. Bickell Foundation. Reel Stories is designed to empower the next generation of storytellers\, giving them the tools and confidence to share their voice with the world. Two separate groups of youth participants (grade 4-8 and grade 9-12) will meet on alternating weeks from 4-6PM to create two short documentaries. Participants will undergo the filmmaking process\, building skills in scriptwriting\, conducting interviews\, camera operation\, lighting\, audio recording and editing under the instruction of Guelph-based filmmaker\, Steve Miller. \n\n\n\n\nSkills in communication\, critical thinking and collaboration will also be developed throughout the program. At the programs’ end in January\, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their completed documentaries for family\, friends and local community members. Reel Stories is more than just a filmmaking course; it’s an experience that equips youth with skills that extend beyond the world of film. \nRegistration for Reel Stories is now open for youth in grades 4-8 and in grades 9-12. DESCRIPTION:PortPrep’s Animation Portfolio Summer Camp August 11 to 18 is for students aged 15-20\, and provides a great simulation of what it would feel like to work at a big animation studio making a film. There is character creation\, background design\, storyboarding\, and even life drawing (a critical skill for success in animation). Students will be creating work that they can use in their portfolio to submit to colleges. It is 7 days long\, with 2 workshops per day\, with evening programming and games.  The camp can be attended as a day camp or as an overnight camp with accommodations and meals.

DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Stephen Surlin \nThis introductory workshop will teach participants the foundational tools and techniques for using Ableton Live\, a digital audio production and performance program. Starting with the Session and Arrangement Views\, this workshop covers how to use tracks\, the mixer\, instruments\, and effects to make music\, sound design and audio for live performance. Little to no experience is required. \nParticipants will need a laptop with Ableton Live. Ed Video has a limited amount of laptops with Ableton Live Intro available for members to use. Non-members may rent a laptop for an additional $10 +HST. \nPlease email workshops@edvideo.org for any questions or accessibility concerns. \n*Stephen Surlin is an interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and educator. Surlin’s practice includes audio\, visual\, and technology-based theatre production work with Canadian Stage\, Outside the March Theatre Company\, Obsidian Theatre Company\, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre\, and youth education programs with Soulpepper and Toronto Metropolitan University. Surlin’s art and design work often incorporates hardware\, software and wearable sensors that wirelessly connect participants to interactive audio-visual experiences. Examples of this work includes immersive sound design for TOPDOG/UNDERDOG (Canadian Stage)\, the wireless haptic feedback system in No Save Points (Outside the March Theatre Company)\, interactive audio-visual installations at Nuit Blanche (Toronto)\, and outdoor musical theatre at the SummerWorks Festival (Toronto)*.
