SUMMARY:Witnessing War
DESCRIPTION:Shaped and inspired by McCrae’s creative expressions\, Witnessing War features drawing\, paintings and sculptures by local and national artists\, spanning 100 years of art as a salve to war. \nThe exhibition includes art works made in response to the six global conflicts in which Canada has fought: \nSouth African War (1899 – 1902) \nFirst World War(1914 – 1918) \nSecond World War (1939 – 1945) \nKorean War (1950-1953) \nPersian Gulf War (1990 -1991) \nAfghanistan War (2001 – 2014). \nWitnessing War also considers responsive works by artists with connections to Guelph and the surrounding region\, who explore themes of human conflict in their art.\nVisit The Guelph Civic Arts Museum now until December 4th to view this exhibit.

SUMMARY:Culture Days: Leave No Trace - Tait Wilman
DESCRIPTION:Nature and a sense of place are catalysts for Tait Wilman’s work\, her artistic practice explores discursive trajectories between sense of self and place\, through installation\, sculpture\, and performance. ‘Leave No Trace’ is a sculpture located at Royal Recreation trail near Guelph Lake. This sculpture will illustrate some of the local ecology you can find on this trail\, here you will also find a small take away. This zine or take away will not only guide you through on your trail excursion but will provide tidbits about the local ecosystem\, and a creative activity. This activation brings a new perspective to the local nature\, diversity and creativity in the area. The artist aims to encourage exploring local nature to learn and create. \nThe artist wants to acknowledge that we live\, learn\, work\, play\, explore and this sculpture rests on the land within the Between the Lakes Purchase (Treaty 3)\, the treaty lands and territory of the Mississauga’s of the Credit. She recognizes that the Anishinnabe\, and Hodinöhsö:ni’ peoples have long-standing and ongoing relationship with the land and each other. The Attawandaron people are part of the archaeological record. \nCulture Days happens annually from September 23 to October 16. \nWhere art meets heritage meets a passion for the natural environment\, That’s So Guelph! Our creative community embodies values that define Guelph – curiosity\, compassion\, innovation\, collaboration\, diversity\, environmentalism\, and activism. Their work entertains and challenges\, beautifies and reveals\, charms and inspires\, remembers and aspires – and will be on full display daily during Culture Days\, all around Guelph\, in heritage buildings and contemporary concert halls\, in galleries and online\, in parks\, on trails\, and by the river. SUMMARY:Conversations in Pipigwan Flute with Rene Meshake
DESCRIPTION:Participate in the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with Ojibwe multidisciplinary artist and residential school survivor Rene Meshake. Rene will present Conversations in Pipigwan Flute\, a presentation of Anishinaabe storytelling\, poetry\, music\, and song. \nThis event is free\, and in-person attendance requires advanced registration. Sign up through Eventbrite. \nThe event will also be livestreamed on our Facebook page for those wishing to tune in from home. \nAbout Rene Meshake: \nAn Ojibwe funky elder\, visual and performing artist\, award-winning author\, storyteller\, flute player\, new media artist and a Recipient of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Rene works to fuse Ojibwe and English words into his stories\, poetry and spoken word performances\, Rene communicates his Ojibwe spiritual heritage to the contemporary world. He was born in the railway town of Nakina in Northwestern Ontario and was raised by his Okomissan grandmother. His education includes: Anishinaabe oral tradition\, language\, arts and culture. \nRene has a diploma in Graphic Design from Sheridan College and a certificate in Creative Writing from the Humber School for Writers. Rene’s body of artwork\, stories and his flute improvisations create a strong\, expressive\, and entertaining presentation for an ever-increasing audience. He also has an active on-line and performing presence as a Funky-Elder and his ‘virtual’ band\, The Firebolt Ensemble.
