DESCRIPTION:The holiday season is officially here\, and the much-anticipated 2024 Guelph Community Santa Parade and Santa Run are back\, bringing festive cheer and community spirit to the heart of Downtown Guelph on Saturday\, December 7\, 2024. These annual traditions\, beloved by families and visitors of all ages\, promise to be bigger and brighter than ever before\, featuring festive floats\, local performers\, and of course\, a special appearance by Santa Claus! \nThe Santa Run is a 3km fun run that takes place along the route ahead of the parade at 5pm. Watch the grand spectacle of hundreds of runners dressed in red and white Santa suits with all proceeds from this race will go towards supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph\, and registration remains open until race day. Arrive early\, grab a steaming beverage from a Downtown business\, cheer on the runners\, and savour the entertainment. \nStarting at 5.30pm\, the parade will wind through the vibrant streets of Guelph\, beginning at Woolwich Street (at Powell St) and moving down Norfolk Street\, Quebec Street and finishing at the railway bridge on Wyndham St N. The route is set to be filled with dazzling holiday-themed floats\, marching bands\, community groups\, and holiday entertainers\, creating an atmosphere of warmth and celebration that embodies the spirit of the season. \n“We are thrilled to bring the community together once again for this festive event\,” said Sam Jewell\, Parade Coordinator. “The Guelph Community Santa Parade is a wonderful opportunity for residents\, families\, and visitors to share in the joy of the season\, experience local talent\, and support local businesses in the heart of our city.” \nHighlights of the 2024 Guelph Community Santa Parade include: \n\n\nA variety of creatively decorated floats representing local organizations\, schools\, and businesses \n\n\nPerformances by local marching bands \n\n\nFestive live music and entertainment along the parade route \n\n\nSpecial appearances by beloved holiday characters\, including Santa \n\n\nOpportunities to support local business vendors offering holiday treats\, crafts\, and gifts \n\n\nFamily-friendly activities and photo opportunities\, including a large metal heart sculpture perfect for those winter portraits. \n\n\nThe Guelph Community Santa Parade is a free event for all\, and visitors are encouraged to arrive early to find the best viewing spots along the parade route. Drop in between 1 – 5 pm for as long as you like to make creative curios and magnificent masterpieces to take home\, and contribute to collective community cut paper banners (papel picado) and murals that will be displayed at the gallery. Learn more about traditional and contemporary paper art practices from Latin America during Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month\, an opportunity to recognize the cultures and contributions of these communities that have indelibly enriched our collective experiences. \nThe AGG Make-a-thon is ideal for everyone\, from beginners and families to established artists. All materials are provided; no experience necessary. Participants 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult for supervision and support. DESCRIPTION:Skill Share Fair and Afterparty \nThe Skill Share Fair and afterparty will take place in Old Quebec Street Shoppes on Saturday\, September 28th in celebration of the grand reopening of the Guelph Tool Library in their new home. The daytime event (11 am to 4 pm) will feature a series of interactive booths where you can try out a series of tools and techniques\, like printmaking\, plantable seed paper\, and so much more. Event attendance is free\, but tickets are required to try out the different activity stations. The afterparty\, taking place from 5:30-8 will feature local eats and treats\, a silent disco\, and a behind the scenes look at the new space. DESCRIPTION:Community is central to Justin Favela’s art practice and the public is invited to join the visiting artist to participate in a collaborative workshop. \n\n\nBe a part of transforming the gallery this fall! Community is central to Justin Favela’s art practice and the public is invited to join the visiting artist to participate in a collaborative workshop and contribute to murals that will be part of Favela’s vibrant large-scale installation\, Entrelazados\, on view this fall in the vaulted two-storey space of the Art Gallery of Guelph. At the core of Favela’s work is an exploration of his own intersecting identities as a Guatemalan-Mexican-American artist\, adapting and repurposing traditional Mexican or Latin American craft practices\, particularly cartoneria or piñata making. Join us for an afternoon of artmaking and be part of the vivid designs that Favela is creating using everyday materials like paper and glue. All are welcome; no experience necessary.
