DESCRIPTION:Music In The Air – Improv SingingWith Jane Lewis\n“We have a duty towards music\, namely\, to invent it.” — Igor Stravinsky\nWhere does music come from (if we’re not reading a score or singing a song we already know)? Take a deep dive into improvisational singing\, and experience the thrill of creating spontaneous music. We’ll explore different ways to create vocal music individually and as a group\, based mainly on the Vocal River exercises created by Rhiannon.\nWe’ll work on inventing melody as well as adding harmony and syncopated parts. It will involve musical creativity\, deep listening\, collaboration\, blending voices\, stretching our comfort zones\, and supporting one another.\nThe main requirement is that you can match pitch at least relatively well\, and that you are fairly comfortable sharing your voice in a group (since there will be times when your voice will be heard alone). If this is pushing your comfort zone\, but you want to work on it\, that’s great too. SUMMARY:Candid Corner with Ed Video
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Ed Video\, the Art Gallery of Guelph invites you to an engaging evening featuring a screening of Susan Mogul’s 1997 film\, I Stare at You and Dream\, currently showcased alongside a collection of over 80 quillboxes in the exhibition Do You Remember Love. The film highlights the intersecting lives of four individuals\, following the intertwining familial and romantic relationships that explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nEvent Highlights \nCandid Corner Pop-Up: At 6:30 pm\, participate in Ed Video’s interactive video recording station where you can share your thoughts and reflections on relationships\, relationality\, and family\, themes inspired by the film. \nFilm Screening: Stay at 7:30 pm to watch Mogul’s intimate exploration of the lives of four individuals over six months. \nBefore the screening\, program facilitators will prompt participants with thought-provoking questions about relationships\, interpersonal connections\, and family ties. Step up to the mic in the Candid Corner booth and contribute your voice to a live\, collaborative video project. Your reflections will be edited in real-time into a short film\, which will be presented at the end of the evening as a collective community response to I Stare at You and Dream. \nParticipation in the Candid Corner program is optional\, and all are welcome. \nPlease note: \n\nThis event is recommended for adults. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.\nSusan Mogul’s film contains mature themes and conversations.\nRegistration is appreciated but not required. Seating and space are limited\, so early arrival is encouraged.\n\n  \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend.   \nSusan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s\, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives\, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally\, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024\, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum\, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. \nMogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020)\, where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. Her career and contributions are further explored in Women of Vision: Histories in Feminist Film and Video\, where a chapter is devoted to her impactful legacy.

DESCRIPTION:Calling all visceral clowns\, earnest wailers\, sound sculptors\, body poets\, etc! TRIAL RUNNERS is a low-pressure event for folks who make performances/videos/sounds to try stuff in front of an audience. Feel like trying something you’ve never done before? Something you’re not sure is going to work?\nTrial Runners will take place at SILENCE (46 Essex St) on Friday\, February 21st from 7-9pm (doors at 6:30). The venue has a physically accessible front entrance and one gender neutral washroom. The event is $5-10/PWYC. Sign up in-person!\nThe first half of this iteration will feature a showcase of past Trial Runners performers; the second half will be an open stage.
