SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping: A Slow Walk to Nowhere
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition 155\,578\, join us for the first of two experimental walking events led by artist Dawn Matheson\, part of the Walking as Remapping series. A Slow Walk to Nowhere invites participants to gently rebel against the demands of speed\, productivity\, and destination by following internal cues. Grounded in the body and guided by intuition\, this simple creative walk offers a space to reflect on movement as an act of resistance—where the journey\, not the arrival\, becomes the point. Inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s Wanderlust\, Matheson sees walking as a deliberate and embodied act of remapping—subtle\, sensorial\, and deeply human. \nBeginning at the Art Gallery of Guelph\, each participant will receive a brief set of instructions and a loose hypothesis to explore. Then\, in solitude\, walkers or rollers will depart from the gallery using only their senses to guide them (especially their sense of wonder) in any direction for 20 minutes\, listening to their own rhythms and surroundings. They will return to AGG to share observations and reflections in a short group conversation. \nOpen to all. Dress for the weather\, bring a phone or timekeeping device if possible\, and come ready to wander!

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday May 20th\, 6:00pm -8:00pm\n\nCalling all fabric scraps!!\n\nThis workshop is all about slowing down and doing some hand stitching by using scraps of fabric and trim as your inspiration. \nWe will work on a fabric collage either on a piece of fabric that can be framed\, hung or used as a patch\, or directly onto your favourite garment (think jean jacket jazz-up). \nThe best thing about this is it uses up all the little scraps that crafters are often left with. We will go over some different sewing techniques and some embroidery stitches too. You can use this time to play\, tell a story with your work or just relax into some hand stitching. \nAll materials will be included!

DESCRIPTION:During the darker winter days\, it’s nice to have a meditative art practice to turn to to help you relax and practice mindfulness. Weaving can have a tangible outcome (like a wall hanging or placemat)\, or be purely for relaxation and play – without the pressure of outcomes. Either way\, it becomes a transcript of your mood and imagination. \nIn this 2 hour class\, we will learn the basics of weaving with little to no financial investment. Using a cardboard loom that we make ourselves and the provided materials\, we will go over basic weaving techniques. \nWe will let the materials guide us and see where they take us. Our intuition will lead us while we slow down our thoughts and enjoy the creative process. No prior weaving experience necessary!

TRIAL RUNNERS is a low-pressure event for folks who make performances/videos/sounds to try stuff in front of an audience. Feel like trying something you’ve never done before? Something you’re not sure is going to work?\nTrial Runners will take place at SILENCE (46 Essex St) on Friday\, February 21st from 7-9pm (doors at 6:30). The venue has a physically accessible front entrance and one gender neutral washroom. The event is $5-10/PWYC. We’ll explore various relaxing vocal exercises: sounding\, toning\, chanting\, and simple songs. This group is intended to give you a sense of calm & grounding to get you through the week\, along with the energetic lift that comes with vocalizing together in a group.
