SUMMARY:Culture Days: Leave No Trace - Tait Wilman
DESCRIPTION:Nature and a sense of place are catalysts for Tait Wilman’s work\, her artistic practice explores discursive trajectories between sense of self and place\, through installation\, sculpture\, and performance. ‘Leave No Trace’ is a sculpture located at Royal Recreation trail near Guelph Lake. This sculpture will illustrate some of the local ecology you can find on this trail\, here you will also find a small take away. This zine or take away will not only guide you through on your trail excursion but will provide tidbits about the local ecosystem\, and a creative activity. This activation brings a new perspective to the local nature\, diversity and creativity in the area. The artist aims to encourage exploring local nature to learn and create. \nThe artist wants to acknowledge that we live\, learn\, work\, play\, explore and this sculpture rests on the land within the Between the Lakes Purchase (Treaty 3)\, the treaty lands and territory of the Mississauga’s of the Credit. She recognizes that the Anishinnabe\, and Hodinöhsö:ni’ peoples have long-standing and ongoing relationship with the land and each other. The Attawandaron people are part of the archaeological record. \nCulture Days happens annually from September 23 to October 16. \nWhere art meets heritage meets a passion for the natural environment\, That’s So Guelph! Our creative community embodies values that define Guelph – curiosity\, compassion\, innovation\, collaboration\, diversity\, environmentalism\, and activism. SUMMARY:Culture Days: Reshaping Ruins presented by Guelph’s Artists in Residence
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Goldie Mill Ruins brought to life through light\, art\, and sound! Reshaping Ruins is an interactive art project that nurtures the community’s connection between the historic past and vibrant present of Goldie Mill Ruins. The project will reanimate Goldie Mill by bringing community-made visual art\, poetry\, and music into the space. \nThe project began with a call for poetry\, with the winning submission by Jeremy Luke-Hill being used as the text for a choral composition\, based on the creative prompt “How does it feel to experience an old space in a new light?” Local singers of all experience levels were invited to an interactive workshop where they learned\, performed\, and recorded the choir piece. The choral recordings were then manipulated into a more abstract\, ambient track to be played during the exhibition to inspire the visual art component. \nThe culminating exhibition will feature collaborative painting projections\, light\, and sound. The projection will consist of abstract and gestural painting\, paired with video footage of life in Guelph. The collaborative painting will mix with the music\, and animate the sounds flowing through the space\, while the videos will highlight the movements of people and nature in Guelph bringing the motion of life into the ruins. The works will be projected in real-time as the audience interacts with the space\, casting shadows onto the old building and bringing it to life with movement. \nThis project is created by Guelph’s 2022 Artists in Residence – Sophia Chilton\, Caleb Bray\, and Silas Chinsen.

DESCRIPTION:Get a thorough introduction to the rich medium of encaustic. \nThis workshop is suitable for people with no experience and for those that want to get back into encaustic painting after being away for a bit. \nEncaustic painting is the process of using melted and pigmented beeswax mixed with damar resin to create exciting\, luminous paintings. \nThis 3.5 hr class (half hour break for lunch) will take you through \n• mixing your own encaustic medium \n• how to add pigment \n• working safely with your materials \n• using tools such as griddles\, heat guns\, propane torches \n• adding other media like paper and creating texture \n• playing on practice boards; you will get to take these home with you \nAll equipment\, encaustic medium\, papers\, wood panel boards will be provided. \nJust bring yourself and your lunch! \nSmall class size ensures you get some one on one time. DESCRIPTION:Floralscapes Workshop with Eileen MacArthur\nTuesday\, October 25 | 12:30 — 1:30 pm\nFree | In Person | To register\, click here \nJoin us for a hands-on workshop! You are invited to this special one-hour program with artist Eileen MacArthur\, focusing on artmaking as both an individual and collective pursuit. Inspired by MacArthur’s art practice\, participants will explore methods of representation\, subjects\, and materials to create floral images that will then be combined into a larger image of a garden. Participants will be encouraged to consider how the images complement and contradict one another\, and how each image contributes to the overall composition. This workshop is suited to beginners and experienced artists alike. All materials will be provided\, and everyone is welcome. Presented by the AGG Volunteer Association\, this workshop is free. Registration is required; sign up today at the link in our bio! \nEileen MacArthur completed an MFA in painting at the University of Guelph in 2005 and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2003. She has exhibited her work in Canada\, the United States and China. In 2009\, she received special mention as a finalist in the Kingston Prize National Portrait competition\, and was named as a finalist in the 2011 competition. Her work was included in the 2009 Biennial at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery\, and in 2010 at the XX/5 Invitational Biennial at Fisch Haus in Wichita\, Kansas. Since 2012\, she has exhibited frequently at the Manifest Gallery and Creative Research Center in Cincinnati and her work was included in International Painting Annual 4 (INPA 4) and International Painting Annual 6 (INPA 6).

DESCRIPTION:Calling all families with young artists and the young at heart – spend Family Day afternoon exploring printmaking and collaborating on a community project! Join us at the gallery Monday\, February 20\, between 1 pm and 4 pm\, for a free guided printmaking workshop and community-engaged project. As a drop-in event\, participants – children and caregivers – will learn how to design\, carve and hand-print a single colour print using a variety of tools and techniques. All printmakers will create and take home their own printmaking block that can be used over and over again and create two printed banners – one of these will become part of a community banner quilt that will be assembled and displayed at the Art Gallery of Guelph. Come and collaborate with your friends\, family and neighbors in the Guelph community! \nThis program is designed for kids aged 4-14 with their caregiver(s)\, though all ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Ed Video’s Technical Director\, Elia Morrison\, interdisciplinary artist\, Dawn Matheson and Anishinaabe Truth Speaker and activist\, Mary Joanne Schuller \nFebruary 23rd\, March 2nd\, March 9th & March 23rd | 7-9PM \nIndigenous storytelling is characteristically self-reflective and shares history with next generations. It is believed that when we share a story and something resonates with another person\, their spirit is connected to that story. They are able to relate directly to the story without having witnessed the events via DNA\, and they know it to be true. \n  \nIn today’s world one can effectively share their story through a podcast. This four-part workshop series breaks down the basics of creating a podcast and using it to tell your own story. This series consists of both instruction and discussion. It will explore the conceptual aspects of idea formulation; digging deep for a story and telling it to resonate and connect with someone else. It will also cover the technical aspect of podcasting. DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS ART IN A JUST RECOVERY?\nArt in a Just Recovery (AIJR) is a local community arts project that explores community care in the context of our ongoing pandemic recovery in Guelph. We’ll explore these ideas together through art and story-telling. Through a series of online and in-person workshops facilitated by Art Not Shame and the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition’s newly formed Creative Collective\, participants will create individual art pieces that eventually form a large-scale digital mural. We will also invite interested participants to contribute to building community-based knowledge about care. \nWHO IS INVOLVED?\nArt in a Just Recovery is a collaborative project between Art Not Shame\, the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition\, University of Guelph researcher\, Amy Kipp\, social artist lead\, Melanie Schambach\, and several community Art Buddies. The project will also consist of two mental health workers who will provide support throughout the project. \nWe are inviting members from the community from ages 10+ to participate. \nWHEN\nWhole Group Workshops | February 27th – April 17th | Mondays\, 6-8pm | online \nArt Buddy Workshops | March 29th – April 22nd | Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, or Saturdays \nClick here to register. \nAs a participant of Art in a Just Recovery\, you will be a part of one of eight Art Buddy Groups that are based on art mediums and locations. The immediate focus is to raise the capital investment required to complete three projects that will contribute 72 supportive housing units in Guelph over the next year. This solution will provide people experiencing chronic homelessness with consistent social and emotional support. Called ‘Permanent Supporting Housing (PSH)’ this can include programs supporting mental health\, wellness\, and food security. While not the only solution\, PSH is life and system changing. Funds raised through the Home for Good campaign will support three PSH projects\, including Kindle Communities\, Stepping Stone\, and Wyndham House\, and will move our community toward a 50% reduction in homelessness. \nThe Home for Good Campaign is a public commitment and invitation to solve homelessness in our community. DESCRIPTION:Do you like to doodle? Do you want to try something new? Are you looking for a space for making art? If you answered yes to any of these questions\, we have just the program for you at the Art Gallery of Guelph!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeginning March 22\, we invite teens ages 13 – 19 to come hang out at the art gallery every second Wednesday from 4 – 6 pm (see calendar below for exact dates). This is an open and diverse space for gently guided creativity and gathering with friends\, where no artistic experience is required. AGG’s programming team will lead participants through specialized projects and will be available for support throughout all sessions. Teens are invited bring their own projects or experiment with the materials provided\, and most of all\, to come as you are. Participants will also have the chance to help decide and plan what art projects the group explores together\, including brainstorming a name for this new creative crew. We want to hear from you!

Join us Sunday\, March 26th at Ed Video (404 York Road) at 3:30pm for an artist talk by Carmen! \nCarmen Mattear (born 2000) is a multidisciplinary artist who collects media as data and finds patterns through method\, and are then translated and expressed as sound installation\, sculpture\, video\, and VR. Her practice is informed by cinema\, music\, television\, and family relations. For Mattear\, art is about creating organized chaos\, in which anecdotes emerge\, revealing our positive humanism. Mattear currently lives in Guelph\, ON and holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours\, with Distinction\, in Studio Art from the University of Guelph\, where she also completed a minor in Psychology. \nThis internship opportunity is presented as part of the “Digital Skills for Youth” program coordinated by the Independent Media Arts Alliance and funded by the Department of Innovation\, Science and Economic Development Canada.
