DESCRIPTION:The holiday season is officially here\, and the much-anticipated 2024 Guelph Community Santa Parade and Santa Run are back\, bringing festive cheer and community spirit to the heart of Downtown Guelph on Saturday\, December 7\, 2024. These annual traditions\, beloved by families and visitors of all ages\, promise to be bigger and brighter than ever before\, featuring festive floats\, local performers\, and of course\, a special appearance by Santa Claus! \nThe Santa Run is a 3km fun run that takes place along the route ahead of the parade at 5pm. Watch the grand spectacle of hundreds of runners dressed in red and white Santa suits with all proceeds from this race will go towards supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph\, and registration remains open until race day. Arrive early\, grab a steaming beverage from a Downtown business\, cheer on the runners\, and savour the entertainment. \nStarting at 5.30pm\, the parade will wind through the vibrant streets of Guelph\, beginning at Woolwich Street (at Powell St) and moving down Norfolk Street\, Quebec Street and finishing at the railway bridge on Wyndham St N. The route is set to be filled with dazzling holiday-themed floats\, marching bands\, community groups\, and holiday entertainers\, creating an atmosphere of warmth and celebration that embodies the spirit of the season. \n“We are thrilled to bring the community together once again for this festive event\,” said Sam Jewell\, Parade Coordinator. “The Guelph Community Santa Parade is a wonderful opportunity for residents\, families\, and visitors to share in the joy of the season\, experience local talent\, and support local businesses in the heart of our city.” \nHighlights of the 2024 Guelph Community Santa Parade include: \n\n\nA variety of creatively decorated floats representing local organizations\, schools\, and businesses \n\n\nPerformances by local marching bands \n\n\nFestive live music and entertainment along the parade route \n\n\nSpecial appearances by beloved holiday characters\, including Santa \n\n\nOpportunities to support local business vendors offering holiday treats\, crafts\, and gifts \n\n\nFamily-friendly activities and photo opportunities\, including a large metal heart sculpture perfect for those winter portraits. \n\n\nThe Guelph Community Santa Parade is a free event for all\, and visitors are encouraged to arrive early to find the best viewing spots along the parade route. DESCRIPTION:This workshop teaches participants essential tools and creative techniques for sound design using Ableton. \nInstructed by Stephen Surlin\, this workshop reviews tools for sound design that can be used in film\, theatre\, games\, and sound effects\, using experimental features of Ableton. This includes the use of effects and instruments as well as the use of free plug-ins to create sound that can be modified in Ableton. These plugins use granular\, spectral and modular synthesis. Some experience with Ableton Live is recommended. \nParticipants will need a laptop with Ableton Live. Ed Video has a limited amount of laptops with Ableton Live Intro available for members to use. Non-members may rent a laptop for an additional $10 +HST. \n  \nPlease email workshops@edvideo.org for any questions or accessibility concerns. \n  \n*Stephen Surlin is an interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and educator. SUMMARY:Intermediate Stop Motion: Claymation
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Fin Janleigh \nSaturday\, October 19th | 12-3PM \nSunday\, October 20th | 12-3PM \nThis 2-part workshop offers an in-depth exploration of stop-motion animation\, focusing on the advanced technique of Claymation. Topics include animation principles like squash and stretch\, exaggeration\, anticipation\, and arcs\, along with basic facial animation. Hands-on practice will involve animating a clay ball and a blob character. By the end of the workshop\, participants will have created a short character animation piece and will have an animatable character to take home. Previous experience with stop motion animation is recommended. \nClay and materials are included with registration. \nParticipants will need a phone or tablet with a stop motion animation app such as iStopMotion or Stop Motion Studio\, and a tripod mount. DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Stephen Surlin \nThis intensive explores the creation of interactive and reactive media art using Ableton Live\, a digital music creation and performance program. Intended for intermediate to advanced users of Ableton Live\, this full day intensive will begin with a focus on using Ableton Live’s performance tools and integration with software that can allow the creation of reactive or interactive music\, art installations\, audio generated by dance/movement\, etc. Topics such as how to use Max/MSP and/or Pure Data\, and other technologies like DMX for lighting\, computer vision\, and sensors will be explored. \nParticipants will also have time to develop a performance or interactive piece to present by the end of the intensive. This work can be the beginning of a new interactive artwork or a self-contained experiment to inspire your future work. \nThis workshop requires a laptop with Ableton Live and either Max/MSP or Pure Data. Ed Video has a limited amount of laptops with Ableton Live Intro and Pure Data available for members to use. Non-members may rent a laptop for an additional $10 +HST. \nPlease email workshops@edvideo.org for any questions or accessibility concerns. \nStephen Surlin is an interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and educator. Surlin’s practice includes audio\, visual\, and technology-based theatre production work with Canadian Stage\, Outside the March Theatre Company\, Obsidian Theatre Company\, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre\, and youth education programs with Soulpepper and Toronto Metropolitan University. Surlin’s art and design work often incorporates hardware\, software and wearable sensors that wirelessly connect participants to interactive audio-visual experiences. DESCRIPTION:This September\, Ed Video launches a new youth program: Reel Stories – Documentary Filmmaking for Youth\, with the support and funding of the J.P. Bickell Foundation. Reel Stories is designed to empower the next generation of storytellers\, giving them the tools and confidence to share their voice with the world. Two separate groups of youth participants (grade 4-8 and grade 9-12) will meet on alternating weeks from 4-6PM to create two short documentaries. Participants will undergo the filmmaking process\, building skills in scriptwriting\, conducting interviews\, camera operation\, lighting\, audio recording and editing under the instruction of Guelph-based filmmaker\, Steve Miller. \n\n\n\n\nSkills in communication\, critical thinking and collaboration will also be developed throughout the program. At the programs’ end in January\, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their completed documentaries for family\, friends and local community members. Reel Stories is more than just a filmmaking course; it’s an experience that equips youth with skills that extend beyond the world of film. \nRegistration for Reel Stories is now open for youth in grades 4-8 and in grades 9-12. SUMMARY:September Mingle with Royal City Quilters Guild
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, September 21 as we welcome new and returning members to celebrate National Sew a Jelly Roll Day at our Community Mingle!!! Our FREE\, fun-filled event will be held from 10 am until 4:00 pm at the spacious Community Living Guelph Wellington located at 8 Royal Road. Park in the north parking lot and look for the sign at the entrance. \nWe will celebrate National Sew a Jelly Roll Day by turning scraps and strips into beautiful French Braid tops and quilts for one of our community outreach projects. \nPlease bring your sewing machine\, neutral thread and basic sewing supplies to the Mingle. The Community Outreach team will bring precut 2.5” x 6.5” scraps or you can contribute your own. We’ll have the Accuquilt cutter on hand to make quick work of the cutting. If you don’t have a travel sewing machine\, please join us anyway. There’s always room for an extra set of hands and plenty of opportunities to mingle with someone.

Perfect for beginners and experienced stitchers alike\, this hands-on session will guide you through basic techniques\, patterns\, and tips\, leaving you the skills to continue crafting at home. Enjoy a relaxed and friendly environment while discovering a new hobby!\n\n\n\nAll materials are included + suitable for all levels. Complementary tea will be provided. \n\nTo ensure willing participants have access to educational opportunities\, please email Ahmri at info@otherwisestudios.com if you face financial barriers. Space permitting\, we can provide discounted or complementary admission. \nAbout the guest instructor:\nThis workshop will be taught by Katie Worthen of Saucy Stitches. Katie (she/her) is a queer museum professional\, event organizer\, and self-taught cross stitch artist based in Guelph. She found her creative outlet during the pandemic and has embraced the slow art of cross stitch and embroidery ever since. SUMMARY:Intro to Interactive Projection Mapping in TouchDesigner
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the creation of live interactive and immersive networks using TouchDesigner\, a node based visual programming software. \nInstructed by Kwasi Bugyei\, this workshop will begin with an overview of TouchDesigner’s interface. Paricipants will learn to blend their visuals with motion capture control tools\, allowing for audience enabled experiences. Once visuals are created\, participants will then learn how to projection map their renders onto various mediums\, both 2D and 3D. This workshop is designed for all TouchDesigner experience levels\, especially those with no experience in projection mapping. All are welcome. \nThis workshop requires a laptop with TouchDesigner and a scroll wheel mouse. Ed Video has a limited amount of laptops with TouchDesigner available for members to use. Non-members may rent a laptop for an additional $10 +HST. \nPlease email workshops@edvideo.org with any questions or accessibility concerns.

SUMMARY:Art Not Shame Art-a-Thon
DESCRIPTION:Art Not Shame invites anyone who is interested to participate in their Art-a-Thon fundraising campaign.  \nThere are not enough accessible\, inclusive art spaces in Guelph and Art Not Shame is going to change that! They are opening a brand new space downtown and are excited to start to welcome the community into this space\, but they need support from the community to help them finish the final touches and ensure the space is intentional and truly accessible for all.  \nAny time between September 1st and 28th\, Art Not Shame is inviting folks to put self-criticism and judgement aside and enjoy the simple act of creating. Utilizing creative prompts as a guide you can sing\, draw\, sew\, write\, paint or do whatever you’re called to do while asking your friends\, family and colleagues to sponsor and cheer you on all while supporting Art Not Shame.
