DESCRIPTION:For 19 years the Guelph Lecture has been offering insightful and exciting performances\, literary readings\, and keynote presentations to our community in Southern Ontario. For 2022 The Guelph Lecture—On Being is back with a live event at the River Run Centre that will blend live music\, spoken word\, and urgent dialogue. Happening May 6th in Guelph\, Ontario\, this year’s presentation will feature a keynote conversation between bestselling author and climate activist Naomi Klein* and Indigenous leader Chief Ninawá Huni Kui of the Amazon forest\, who will discuss the future of the Amazon and the implications it has for the rest of the world. JUNO Award winning duo Digging Roots will perform songs from their recent albums\, and to kick off the evening we will hear a spoken word performance from Ontario’s poet laureate Randell Adjei. \nTickets are available now through the River Run Centre’s box office. The evening’s presentations will include ASL translation and live transcription. \nTo protect the vulnerable from COVID-19\, the ArtsEverywhere Festival team requests that all attendees wear a mask. Family history and work lyrics occur against a tonal backdrop of the carceral. Yet Tad-y brings a tenderness to these fraught circumstances\, finding beauty in detail and repetitive acts of love.\n\nCarl Watts’ “I Just Wrote This Five Minutes Ago” – A book of poetry criticism that shows how contemporary poetry creates meaning and value\, how poetry might get real work out of us\, in the process locating and grounding us among real people and a real practice.

Reflecting Chaulk’s own experience\, the speaker endures long irregular work hours\, weather\, icebergs\, and loneliness\, all the while navigating the taut intersections of race\, labour\, class\, and masculinity.\n\nKevin Heslop’s “the correct fury of your why is a mountain” – Poems that are by turns experiment\, lyric\, and incantation\, and that Jim Johnstone describes as “one of the most promising poetic projects to come out of Canada in recent years.”\n\nKhashayar Mohammadi’s “Me\, You\, Then Snow” – The debut full-length collection from Iranian-born poet\, Khashayar Mohammadi\, playing with ideas of national\, cultural\, and queer identities through a diverse set of forms and approaches.\n\nAaron Schneider’s “What We Think We Know” – A debut collection of short fiction that tests\, expands\, and sometimes explodes the limits of the short story\, and that Jean Marc Ah-Sen rates as “one of the most daring books to come out in recent memory.”\n\nJim Johnstones’ “Infinity Network” explores pressing questions about the ubiquity of surveillance and social media\, and evokes\, with a powerful intelligence\, the neurosis of living in a consumerism-obsessed era.

Then perhaps you have a memoir in you. \nMy name is Sue Williams\, and I am a local Guelph author. My writing career began in my fifties as a result of a life-altering experience from which I felt I had a story that needed telling. The result was my memoir\, Ready to Come About\, published by Dundurn Press in 2019. \nI am excited to be discussing the crafting of memoir with Keriann McGoogan\, author of Chasing Lemurs – My Journey into the Heart of Madagascar\, as part of the Wellington County Writers’ Festival. DESCRIPTION:Come one come all! Participate in a unique mixed media art workshop with renowned Anishinaabe artist Rene Meshake. You’ll be using images\, text and design to form a collage that tells both intentional and subconscious stories. \nEach student will share the story behind their artwork at the workshop\, empowering the group to form a community and enjoy a communal experience. Rene will lift an Anishinaabe word bundle from the stories shared that students will take home. If possible\, bring your own photos or selfies to personalize your collage! \nThis workshop takes place at the Civic Museum on May 14 from 1 – 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $40 + HST and fees for museum members\, and $50 + HST and fees for non-members. \nReserve your tickets through Eventbrite now!
