SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping: Poem-Making from Place with Anna Swanson
DESCRIPTION:May 13.2025 6:00pm – 8:30pm\n\n\nLocation: The Boathouse Tea Room\, 116 Gordon St\, Guelph ON\nPrice: Free\nWalking as Remapping\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis walk invites participants to engage in an exploration of place through poetry. Inspired by the practice of ecological mapping and the work of writer Anna Swanson\, participants will use sight\, sound\, and texture as tools for gathering language from the world around us on this walk along the Speed and Eramosa Rivers. Throughout the walk\, landscape and cityscape will be observed not just as scenery\, but as layered texts: full of found language\, silences\, and ruptures. \nStarting and ending at the Covered Bridge steps by the Boathouse Tea Room\, this walk includes moments of observation\, note-taking\, and guided prompts that encourage poetic response. The poems created—individually and together—become a remapping of Guelph based on the sensory\, emotional\, and imagined textures of the city. No experience with poetry is required—just a willingness to walk\, to notice\, and to listen. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:ANIMA presents :  The Sign of Jonas; An Apocalypse Folktale by Luke Hathaway & Benton Roark
DESCRIPTION:ANIMA Early Music is thrilled to present The Sign of Jonas; An Apocalypse Folktale\, with texts by Luke Hathaway & music by Benton Roark. This (55-minute) work will be performed by Mother Country\, a beautiful roots music ensemble led by Benton Roark (voice\, banjo\, guitar & piano) and featuring Andrew Ivens (voice\, mandolin\, guitar\, piano & lap steel)\, Phil Albert (voice & bass) & Chris Hull (percussion). Mother Country will be joined by ANIMA’s artist co-directors\, Daniel Cabena (voice & fiddle) & Luke Hathaway (spoken word). \nHere are a few notes about this work from composer Benton Roark: \nSparse in construction\, timeless in imagery\, arcane in meaning\, and proto-mythical in characters and narrative\, The Sign of Jonas superimposes personal apocalypse on environmental and cultural collapse. It imagines a song cycle lost and found: a musical manuscript orphaned by the cataclysms of the 21st century\, and rewakened to ritual life far in the future. The fragmentary text speaks of travelling\, of death and rebirth\, of decay and regeneration; the music is a ritualized series of part songs\, responsorials\, chants\, chorales\, and incantations\, performed as a folk-music-pageant-mystery-play\, complete with communal singing and other forms of audience participation. When our lives end\, they continue in one another.

DESCRIPTION:The Guelph Book Bash Festival is an annual celebration of the books published by Guelph and area authors over the previous year. The event is presented by Vocamus Writers Community. \nThis year\, it will be held on Sunday November 3\, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM\, at the Guelph Farmers’ Market. \nOver thirty authors will be in attendance to sell their books\, chat with attendees\, and sign copies. The authors will be joined by many of Guelph’s micro-presses\, bookstores\, libraries\, cultural groups\, and literacy organizations\, all the people who help make up our great local book culture. \nThere will also be storytelling and free books for children\, a leave-a-book-take-a-book table\, a book composting demonstration\, food and refreshments for sale\, live music\,gift wrapping\, and other fun! \nThere is no cost for the event\, but donations will be accepted for Action Read\, a local charity that provides literacy programs in the community. \n“As a writer\, I’ve participated at the Book Bash each time I have new work to share. No\, it is not a\nFahrenheit 451 style destruction of radical writing\, nor is it a standard book sale. The actual authors\nstaff the tables. The atmosphere is celebratory\, and the wares are unique. There’s nothing more\nfulfilling for me\, as the author\, to be able to explain my book and meet readers who have enjoyed my\nprevious publications. Whether I’m meeting someone new\, or a repeat supporter of my work\, the\nafternoon is energizing. DESCRIPTION:The Pay it Forward Arts Fund (PIFAF) is a gift of artist Barbara Salsberg Mathews and her husband Bruce Mathews. The award helps local artists\, in any discipline\, fund art projects that “pay it forward” and benefit the community. \nThe PIFAF takes many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. It was designed to encourage artists to rise to the challenge and “pay it forward” by using their talents to help others and the Guelph community. The PIFAF runs for a total of four years. Art Not Shame will administer the fund with the goal of amplifying local community-engaged arts projects. \nWho is Eligible \nAny artist (or group of artists) age 18 or over\, working in Guelph and is a permanent citizen of Canada or persons upon whom refugee protection has been conferred\, and who are legally entitled to work in Ontario. They are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that pay it forward and benefit the community. A preference may be given to those who demonstrate a long-standing connection to the Guelph community. All artistic mediums are welcome to apply. \nWhat is Eligible \nGuelph-Wellington area artists are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that focus on improving lives and thereby enriching our community. The award could take many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. \nThese projects must be original in nature (this fund does not support events\, projects or programs that have already been established) and cannot have begun prior to the award being granted. DESCRIPTION:The Guelph Enabling Garden and the Guelph Guild of Storytellers is delighted to announce that Tea ‘n’ Tales is back to the Guelph Enabling Garden located within Riverside Park for the summer of 2024 for its 16th season\, and it’s bigger and better than ever! Beginning on June 14 and continuing every Friday until September 13\, the fourteen Friday morning performances will feature many of the tellers from previous years\, along with some new faces and their stories. Each hour-long performance begins at 10:30 a.m. These tellers come to Guelph from across Southern Ontario\, From Oshawa to St Thomas\, from Elora to Hamilton. One teller comes annually from Wisconsin\, USA. There shall also be a Canada Day performance\, on Saturday\, July 1\, with James Gordon Brian Holstein and Larry Gibbs. The tellers and their stories\, along with the music of violinist Bridget Walsh\, would be a great way to kick off the Rotary celebrations in the park. It should be noted that on Canada Day and on the four Family Saturdays\, there is a possible appearance by Robert Munsch Then there will be four more Saturday family-themed sessions\, “Under the Magic Ash”. Each of these will feature a variety of different tellers\, musicians and puppeteers.\nWhile all 19 performances commence at 10:30 a.m.\, there shall be prelude entertainment from 10:00\na.m. for all of the events. Amongst those already committed to play is the beloved violinist Bridget\nWalsh\, an A Capella group\, a jazz trio\, The Celtic band Shepherd’s Knot\, and the Silver Strummers.\nAudience members are advised to arrive early\, to secure a good spot and enjoy the music. A folding\nlawn chair is a necessity. A mug will also be needed for a free Planet Bean coffee or an Iced Tea. It’s a work of breath and movement and of heartfelt listening.  \nThe gentle conversation of this première performance has been made possible by the Canada Council for the Arts and the kind offices of composer James Rolfe (https://www.jamesrolfe.ca)\, who edited our musical scores. \nA chapbook with new words by Luke Hathaway and an afterword by Daniel Cabena is printed and published by Karen Schindler\, Baseline Press (https://www.baselinepress.ca). \nFor more information: animaearlymusic@gmail.com  \nANIMA (https://www.animaearlymusic.com) a metamorphosing ensemble\, is the gathering-place in art of scholar-singer Daniel Cabena and trans poet/librettist Luke Hathaway. It is a place of queer friendship and sustaining story\, a place where old texts and melodies are animated by spirit and voice. Our work is inspired by Dan’s genderqueer voice and performance history; by early-music sources which suggest new and fabulous possibilities for love and community; and by Luke’s trans-mystical poetry\, in which masculine\, feminine\, and non-binary voices often speak as multiple aspects of a single person. Working together\, we create and commission new works of text and music that are in conversation with early sources and soundworlds. We put these works up on their feet in novel performance contexts (workshops\, teach-ins\, touring programs …). We collaborate with other artists whose worlds of sound and spirit enrich our own.
