SUMMARY:Applications for the Pay it Forward Arts Fund now open through Art Not Shame
DESCRIPTION:The Pay it Forward Arts Fund (PIFAF) is a gift of artist Barbara Salsberg Mathews and her husband Bruce Mathews. The award helps local artists\, in any discipline\, fund art projects that “pay it forward” and benefit the community. \nThe PIFAF takes many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. It was designed to encourage artists to rise to the challenge and “pay it forward” by using their talents to help others and the Guelph community. The PIFAF runs for a total of four years. Art Not Shame will administer the fund with the goal of amplifying local community-engaged arts projects. \nWho is Eligible \nAny artist (or group of artists) age 18 or over\, working in Guelph and is a permanent citizen of Canada or persons upon whom refugee protection has been conferred\, and who are legally entitled to work in Ontario. They are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that pay it forward and benefit the community. A preference may be given to those who demonstrate a long-standing connection to the Guelph community. All artistic mediums are welcome to apply. \nWhat is Eligible \nGuelph-Wellington area artists are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that focus on improving lives and thereby enriching our community. The award could take many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. \nThese projects must be original in nature (this fund does not support events\, projects or programs that have already been established) and cannot have begun prior to the award being granted. The project should be able to be completed within the funding requested. \nAmount of Award \nThis grant will fund one or more projects of up to $6\,000.

SUMMARY:Tea and Tales
DESCRIPTION:The Guelph Enabling Garden and the Guelph Guild of Storytellers is delighted to announce that Tea ‘n’ Tales is back to the Guelph Enabling Garden located within Riverside Park for the summer of 2024 for its 16th season\, and it’s bigger and better than ever! Beginning on June 14 and continuing every Friday until September 13\, the fourteen Friday morning performances will feature many of the tellers from previous years\, along with some new faces and their stories. Each hour-long performance begins at 10:30 a.m. These tellers come to Guelph from across Southern Ontario\, From Oshawa to St Thomas\, from Elora to Hamilton. One teller comes annually from Wisconsin\, USA. There shall also be a Canada Day performance\, on Saturday\, July 1\, with James Gordon Brian Holstein and Larry Gibbs. The tellers and their stories\, along with the music of violinist Bridget Walsh\, would be a great way to kick off the Rotary celebrations in the park. It should be noted that on Canada Day and on the four Family Saturdays\, there is a possible appearance by Robert Munsch Then there will be four more Saturday family-themed sessions\, “Under the Magic Ash”. Each of these will feature a variety of different tellers\, musicians and puppeteers.\nWhile all 19 performances commence at 10:30 a.m.\, there shall be prelude entertainment from 10:00\na.m. for all of the events. Amongst those already committed to play is the beloved violinist Bridget\nWalsh\, an A Capella group\, a jazz trio\, The Celtic band Shepherd’s Knot\, and the Silver Strummers.\nAudience members are advised to arrive early\, to secure a good spot and enjoy the music. A folding\nlawn chair is a necessity. A mug will also be needed for a free Planet Bean coffee or an Iced Tea. Our work is inspired by Dan’s genderqueer voice and performance history; by early-music sources which suggest new and fabulous possibilities for love and community; and by Luke’s trans-mystical poetry\, in which masculine\, feminine\, and non-binary voices often speak as multiple aspects of a single person. Working together\, we create and commission new works of text and music that are in conversation with early sources and soundworlds. We put these works up on their feet in novel performance contexts (workshops\, teach-ins\, touring programs …). We collaborate with other artists whose worlds of sound and spirit enrich our own.

DESCRIPTION:January 26 – 29\, 2023 \nClick here for more info. \nThe ArtsEverywhere Festival is the place where conversations\, ideas\, and artistic experiments presented on ArtsEverywhere.ca come alive in our home community of Guelph\, Ontario\, Canada. \nOver four days\, the festival offers lectures\, conversations\, music\, artistic performances\, circle gatherings\, literary readings\, exhibitions\, and much more. As the publisher of ArtsEverywhere.ca\, Musagetes co-presents the festival in partnership with the University of Guelph and the Eramosa Institute. Many other community partners collaborate with us to co-present specific events. \nThe Guelph Lecture—On Being\nThe festival’s inspiration and its signature event\, The Guelph Lecture—On Being\, enters its 16th year in 2019—a testament to the success of community initiatives and the life of creative ideas in Guelph. The Eramosa Institute launched the Guelph Lecture in 2003. Since the Eramosa Institute launched the lecture in 2003\, it has become a widely recognized series with each event consisting of a literary reading\, music performance\, and keynote lecture. Past literary guests have included Tanya Talaga\, Lee Maracle\, Miriam Toews\, Sandra Birdsell\, Rawi Hage\, M.G. Vassanji\, Michael Helm\, Ann Hui\, and Thomas King\, among many others. Past lectures have been presented by Jeannette Armstrong\, Joseph Heath\, Madeleine Redfern\, John Ralston Saul\, \, Lee Smolin\, Jaron Lanier\, Louise Fréchette\, Henry Mintzberg\, Alexandre Trudeau\, Severn Cullis-Suzuki\, Guy Maddin\, Atom Egoyan\, Brigitte Shim\, Janice Gross Stein\, and Mark Kingwell. Our musical guests have included The Young Turban Professionals with Esmeralda Enrique\, Martha Henry\, Spencer Shewen\, Spirits of Havana with Jane Bunnett\, Oni the Haitian Sensation\, Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk\, Okavango African Orchestra\, Midnight Shine\, The Penderecki String Quartet\, DJ Cyclist\, Basia Bulat\, and Sarah Neufeld. \nArtsEverywhere Keeps the Conversation Going\nThe ArtsEverywhere Festival aims to spark rich dialogues about issues\, ideas\, and challenges that are of the interest to our Guelph & Region audiences\, and of relevance and interest to our national and global audiences on ArtsEverywhere.ca. This documentary explores Tagaq’s transformation of sound with an eye to colonial fallout\, natural freedom\, and Canadian history. \nWe witness Tagaq’s intimate relationship with the Nuna—the Land—a living\, breathing organism present in all forms of her improvised performances. Ever Deadly weaves concert footage with stunning sequences filmed on location in Nunavut\, seamlessly bridging landscapes\, stories and songs with pain\, anger and triumph—all through the expressions of one of the most innovative musical performers of our time. \nAccompanying our screening of the film will be performances from guest Inuk artists curated by Taqralik Partridge. \nThe Bookshelf\, Quebec Street\, Guelph\, ON. \nThe radical potential of ekphrasis for Blackness\, Access\, and Magic \nSunday\, January 29\, 2023; 10:00 am – 12:00 pm\n\nThe term “ekphrasis” refers to the practice of describing artwork\, for example a poetic description of a painting. Ekphrasis is known for its potential to augment a work—in translating the original artwork\, a collaboration emerges which can potentially contribute to revealing an artwork’s essence. \nCape Breton-based disability advocate and social practice artist Aislinn Thomas\, Berlin-based writer Erin Honeycutt\, and Big Ideas lecturer Derrais Carter come together to discuss how the practice of describing artwork forms an intimate part of their distinct practices and communities—be they Disability arts communities and the pleasure of audio description\, Black communities and multiple ekphrastic descriptions of the iconic painting The Sugar Shack\, or communities of poets and the “image magic” of writing that Honeycutt discusses in her book Sensible Structures. DESCRIPTION:Participate in the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with Ojibwe multidisciplinary artist and residential school survivor Rene Meshake. Rene will present Conversations in Pipigwan Flute\, a presentation of Anishinaabe storytelling\, poetry\, music\, and song. \nThis event is free\, and in-person attendance requires advanced registration. Sign up through Eventbrite. \nThe event will also be livestreamed on our Facebook page for those wishing to tune in from home. \nAbout Rene Meshake: \nAn Ojibwe funky elder\, visual and performing artist\, award-winning author\, storyteller\, flute player\, new media artist and a Recipient of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Rene works to fuse Ojibwe and English words into his stories\, poetry and spoken word performances\, Rene communicates his Ojibwe spiritual heritage to the contemporary world. He was born in the railway town of Nakina in Northwestern Ontario and was raised by his Okomissan grandmother. His education includes: Anishinaabe oral tradition\, language\, arts and culture. \nRene has a diploma in Graphic Design from Sheridan College and a certificate in Creative Writing from the Humber School for Writers. Rene’s body of artwork\, stories and his flute improvisations create a strong\, expressive\, and entertaining presentation for an ever-increasing audience. He also has an active on-line and performing presence as a Funky-Elder and his ‘virtual’ band\, The Firebolt Ensemble.

He began his career in 1971\, as a manuscript editor at Pocket Books Canada. In 1972\, he joined Scholastic Canada as an editor and eventually became responsible for several of Scholastic’s school Book Clubs. While there\, he also started a successful teacher’s book club\, a book club for families\, and was involved in the creation of Scholastic’s Canadian book publishing program. In 1980 he was transferred to New York as Manager of the Adult Marketing Division of Scholastic U.S. \nHe was instrumental in the founding of Madison Press Books in 1979 and returned to Canada in 1984 to become Vice-President\, Editorial Director and Publisher. DESCRIPTION:I am Sue Williams\, a local Guelph author. My writing career began in my fifties when\, as a result of a life-altering experience\, I found myself with a story that I felt needed telling. The result was my memoir\, Ready to Come About (Dundurn Press\, 2019). \nI am delighted to be part of the Closing Day festivities of the first annual Wellington County Writers’ Festival\, on the lovely Hillsburgh Library grounds\, at which I will be reading from my book\, along with several other Guelph and area authors.
