It’s a work of breath and movement and of heartfelt listening.  \nThe gentle conversation of this première performance has been made possible by the Canada Council for the Arts and the kind offices of composer James Rolfe (https://www.jamesrolfe.ca)\, who edited our musical scores. \nA chapbook with new words by Luke Hathaway and an afterword by Daniel Cabena is printed and published by Karen Schindler\, Baseline Press (https://www.baselinepress.ca). \nFor more information: animaearlymusic@gmail.com  \nANIMA (https://www.animaearlymusic.com) a metamorphosing ensemble\, is the gathering-place in art of scholar-singer Daniel Cabena and trans poet/librettist Luke Hathaway. It is a place of queer friendship and sustaining story\, a place where old texts and melodies are animated by spirit and voice. Our work is inspired by Dan’s genderqueer voice and performance history; by early-music sources which suggest new and fabulous possibilities for love and community; and by Luke’s trans-mystical poetry\, in which masculine\, feminine\, and non-binary voices often speak as multiple aspects of a single person. Working together\, we create and commission new works of text and music that are in conversation with early sources and soundworlds. We put these works up on their feet in novel performance contexts (workshops\, teach-ins\, touring programs …). We collaborate with other artists whose worlds of sound and spirit enrich our own.

DESCRIPTION:Guelph Musicfest 2024 presents virtuoso pianist Stewart Goodyear. Proclaimed “a phenomenon” by the Los Angeles Times and “one of the best pianists of his generation” by the Philadelphia Inquirer\, Stewart Goodyear is an accomplished concert pianist\, improviser and composer. Mr. Goodyear has performed with and has been commissioned by many of the major orchestras and chamber music organizations worldwide. Stewart Goodyear performs an all-Gershwin concert\, including the solo version of Rhapsody in Blue (in celebration of the 100th anniversary of this famous showpiece). This is part of PIANO DUO series with Sheng Cai playing Rachmaninov\, Beethoven\, Chopin and Morawetz on May 31\, available at a special price.

DESCRIPTION:Internationally-renowned violinist Jerzy Kaplanek has established himself as a chamber musician\, member of the celebrated Penderecki String Quartet\, soloist\, dedicated teacher\, adjudicator\, artistic director of QuartetFest and lately as a jazz violinist. \nWith his sublime\, soulful sound\, the Kaplanek Quartet will explore a combination of jazz standards and originals. They will introduce us to the varied and powerful tunes by iconic jazz violinists Jean-Luc Ponty\, Didier Lockwood\, Zbigniew Seifert and Adam Baldych. Spend an evening at the Jazz Room going on this musical journey with Kaplanek as he brings the high-powered jazz-fusion vibe that suits his violin playing so perfectly. \nFor the “warm-up” act\, Mr. Kaplanek is joined by pianist Ken Gee in Ravel’s Sonata no. 1 for violin and piano\, opus posthumous.

DESCRIPTION:Art on the Street is co-presented with Downtown Guelph Business Association and features contemporary fine art and craft. The juried event has grown since 2003 to become Guelph’s largest outdoor exhibition and sale. Art on the Street spotlights talent within the regional arts community and offers a fresh-air art experience for Guelph’s residents and visitors. Each year\, established and emerging artists showcase their works to several thousand visitors in temporary\, open-air studios.
