DESCRIPTION:Music In The Air – Improv SingingWith Jane Lewis\n“We have a duty towards music\, namely\, to invent it.” — Igor Stravinsky\nWhere does music come from (if we’re not reading a score or singing a song we already know)? Take a deep dive into improvisational singing\, and experience the thrill of creating spontaneous music. We’ll explore different ways to create vocal music individually and as a group\, based mainly on the Vocal River exercises created by Rhiannon.\nWe’ll work on inventing melody as well as adding harmony and syncopated parts. It will involve musical creativity\, deep listening\, collaboration\, blending voices\, stretching our comfort zones\, and supporting one another.\nThe main requirement is that you can match pitch at least relatively well\, and that you are fairly comfortable sharing your voice in a group (since there will be times when your voice will be heard alone). If this is pushing your comfort zone\, but you want to work on it\, that’s great too. Concert from 2pm – 4pm. \nGATHERING SPARKS is the graceful collision of Eve Goldberg and Jane Lewis—musical friends who bonded over finely tuned harmonies and the craft of songwriting. Their inclusive approach embraces folk\, pop\, blues and gospel influences tastefully played on acoustic guitar\, piano\, accordion\, and ukulele. They were nominated for a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year\, and won the 2019 Folk Music Ontario “Songs From the Heart” award. You will come to listen\, and walk away singing! \nCHERYL PRASHKER studied classical percussion at McGill University in Montreal\, Canada\, where she was born and raised. She has toured Canada\, U.S. Europe and Russia. She spent many years in NY City where she honed her skills of playing anything from Rock and Roll\, Klezmer\, to Celtic as well as Middle Eastern music. She now uses her special style of percussion to enhance the music of such artists as Eric Andersen\, Jonathan Edwards\, Pat Wictor\, Tracy Grammer\, Full Frontal Folk and her own Celtic Roots Music group RUNA. \nJAMES GORDON has been there. He’s done that. He has had a remarkably diverse and resilient career in the Canadian cultural sector. As a solo singer-songwriter and with the ground-breaking trio Tamarack\, he’s recorded 42 albums and toured relentlessly around the world. He’s written for symphony orchestras\, musical theatre and dance works\, scored films\, and for more than ten years was heard on CBC radio as songwriter-in-residence for the ’Basic Black’ and ‘Ontario Morning’ programs. A list of requested items can be found below. \nMORE ABOUT CHALMERS: \nChalmers Community Services Centre (CCSC) is a registered charity that is the only no-proof-of-income-needed food pantry in the City of Guelph – operating Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, and Fridays. Due to the pandemic severely limiting city-wide programs and supports for families\, as well as income streams for many caregivers\, CCS has seen numbers of first-time food pantry users increase exponentially. This was showcased as 1 in 7 residents in Guelph reported living in a food insecure household\, with 1 in 6 reported being severely food insecure (2021). This has been perpetuated by increasing costs at the grocery stores on food\, hygiene products\, and basic household necessities. At CCSC\, we pride ourselves in offering no-judgement services to Guelph patrons\, allowing users to choose from a variety of food options that both are culturally-diverse\, and adhere to those with dietary restrictions. We have a mandate to provide healthy\, fresh food to our guest\, propelled by philosophies of inclusiveness and community. DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a unique\, intimate evening with local legends\, SHEBAD\, at Otherwise Studios for another live performance life drawing event! \nThis event will give you a behind-the-scenes peak at what a SHEBAD rehearsal looks and sounds like\, while learning how to draw a moving figure. \nThe rehearsal format and drawing class are carefully curated together to create an enjoyable art & music experience that match each other’s energy. There will be guided demos every step of the way\, teaching techniques to draw and problem-solve quickly\, lean into intuition\, and capture moving shape\, form\, and light. \nJoin us for this rare\, stripped back rehearsal setting and artistic event. Come to draw\, or just enjoy the sweet sounds of the band. This event has a sliding scale ticket system\, please pay what you can and support local artists! \nAll materials will be supplied\, no experience necessary. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials if they wish. There will be both seated and standing options. Whether you plan to draw or just come and listen\, we welcome you into this evening of good vibes and great music. \nAbout the band\nSHEBAD is the creative spirit of visual artist and vocalist Claire Voy and multi-instrumentalist Ciccio Spagnolo. This Guelph-based music project plays on the exploratory realm of Indie Soul\, characterized by jazz-influenced melodies\, danceable basslines\, and Claire’s transcendent voice. Their sound is a synthesis of influences like Stevie Wonder\, Hiatus Kaiyote\, Amy Winehouse\, Daft Punk\, and Erykah Badu\, making the music compelling and curious with lyrics from the heart. CBC’s Laila Biali aptly describes their sound as “Music that exists in a sonic world of its own”.
