DESCRIPTION:November 6th 6:30-9:00  \nArt Gallery of Guelph\, 358 Gordon St\, Guelph\, ON N1G 1Y1 \nFree \nClick here to RSVP for this free event! \nGuelph Arts Council is pleased to collaborate with the University of Guelph’s School of Fine Art and Music and the Art Gallery of Guelph in presenting Opportunity Knocks: Re-imagining your Arts Career. How can arts students and emerging artists reimagine the careers they could pursue? What are the emergent\, entrepreneurial\, or unexpected career paths that arts grads have taken? A group of diverse arts trail blazers will share stories and lessons learned. Students\, artists and creatives of all disciplines\, ages and experience levels are welcome.  The Panel Discussion will run from 6:30pm-8:00pm followed by time to connect and enjoy refreshments. \n​ \nMeet the panelists: \nPaige Bromby is a painter and cultural administrator based in Fergus\, Ontario\, She holds a Bachelors of Arts in Studio Art from the University of Guelph (2020). \nWorking primarily in painting\, Paige explores her relationship to natural spaces in a digital age. She is interested in how familial spaces appear through her own interactions within them\, through a digital archive and as recorded and memorialized in paint. The many lives of a landscape – how those lives and interactions change through the seasons of nature and life.  \n​ \nShe maintains her painting practice while continuing her work in community arts\, facilitating a local critique night\, working for various arts/culture organizations and co-founding an artist mentorship program for artists with developmental disabilities. \n​ \nPatrick Cruz is an artist\, educator\, and albularyo who considers the role of spirituality\, improvisation\, intuition\, and play as emancipatory tools to reify embedded colonial frameworks and ideologies in art making. Cruz employs meditation\, divination\, and hypnosis as research methodologies to exhume and retrieve hidden knowledge. His works are informed by the intersections of clown philosophy\, magic\, and the occult\, and its syncretic manifestations and relationship in contemporary life. Most recently\, Cruz has been making works using material retrieved from past-life regressions to navigate and side-step cultural and ancestral identity. \nIn 2021\, he received the prestigious Thirteen Artist Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines and won the national title for the 17th RBC Canadian Painting Competition in 2015. He is an Assistant Professor in Studio Art at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus and the Daniels Faculty. He is the founder and co-director of the Kamias Triennial\, co-curator of Ben Flores Fan Club Collective with Christian Vistan\, collaborator at Boring Earth with Laila Fox\, and one of the 19 members of the artist-run collective the Plumb. \n​ \n​Daphne Zoe Dahlia / DAPH (She/Her) has been performing\, composing\, recording\, producing\, and mentoring artists for 20+ years. In 2017\, she founded Copper Sound\, a boutique recording studio in Guelph\, ON\, Canada. It serves as home base for her collaborations with artists locally and around the world. Daph’s work also includes musical directing for improv comedy\, audio mixing for commercials\, composing for film\, voice over work\, album art\, photography\, and website design. Daphne has been making new queer centred electronic music under the artist name DAPH. Her new direction combines deep vocals on top of hardware synths and samplers\, bringing together elements of synth pop\, house\, hip hop\, and darkwave.

DESCRIPTION:Violinist Sadie Fields returns to Canada from Belgium to join friend/pianist/Musicfest director Ken Gee for another Guelph Musicfest Fall ENCORE recital as Guelph Musicfest 2025 continues its musical journey Around the World! \nEast to West—a Musical Journey presents music from Japan to Canada. The concert in the Recital Hall of the Guelph Youth Music Centre includes Takemitsu\, Distance de Fée; Bartók\, Romanian Folk Dances; Brahms\, Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major; Weinberg\, Two Songs without Words; Raminsh\, Aria (1987); Enman\, Imagined Shapes (2022). \nThis concert is the second of Guelph Musicfest’s Encore series\, which includes a concert by the Zemlinsky String Quartet (from Prague) on Saturday October 25 at the GYMC. More information at https://guelphmusicfest.ca \nSadie and Ken have been performing together as a duo and in the Festival Trio for many years. During that time\, they have built on a common sense of musicality and close friendship that makes for wonderful performances. \nSadie enjoys a richly varied career as a soloist\, chamber musician\, curator\, and artistic director. Her love affair with the violin began at the age of seven when her primary school visited the renowned Axelrod collection of Stradivarius violins. Mesmerized by the sound\, she convinced her mother to let her start lessons\, leading to a lifelong dedication to the instrument. \nPerforming regularly across Europe and North America\, Sadie’s concerts also take her to destinations further afield\, including Asia\, the Middle East\, and New Zealand. A passionate advocate for chamber music\, she was the founding leader of the Castalian String Quartet and violinist of Trio Khnopff. She also founded the Belgium-based Flash Ensemble\, a flexible chamber group centred around a string trio\, and is a member of the Festival Trio in Canada. In addition to her ensemble work\, Sadie collaborates with a range of distinguished pianists and recently formed a duo with Italian accordionist Luca Piovesan. Most recently\, Sadie has been appointed leader of the acclaimed Edinburgh Quartet\, an ensemble with a rich history spanning over more than 60 years. \nAs a recording artist\, Sadie’s most recent recording features Flash Ensemble’s pioneering interpretation of the complete string trios by Hungarian composer László Lajtha (Pavane Records\, 2023)\, and was awarded 5 stars in Diapason. Another recording\, ‘Weinberg – 1945’\, by Trio Khnopff\, was celebrated by critics in both Europe and North America and was selected as BBC Music Magazine’s ‘Chamber Disc of the Month’ for January 2020. Sadie’s discography also includes several recordings for BIS Records with Camerata Nordica (Sweden)\, and two highly acclaimed albums with Champs Hill Records. Her Mendelssohn chamber music disc earned BBC Music Magazine’s Editor’s Choice and ‘Chamber Disc of the Month’ honours\, as well as the German Record Critics’ Award for ‘Chamber Music Disc of the Quarter.’ Her second Champs Hill release\, featuring the complete Brahms Sonatas with pianist Jeremy Young\, also received widespread critical acclaim. \nSadie is the founder and director of the Mini Concerts series in Brussels\, and has recently taken up the role of artistic director of the Music in Rannoch concert series in the Highlands of Scotland. \nSadie holds a PhD from the Royal Academy of Music in London\, where her practice-led doctoral research explored practical and philosophical ideas surrounding the concepts of learning and tradition\, with a focus on her engagement with Bartók’s violin works. She has been awarded prizes and scholarships from over twenty UK and international organizations\, and she has held prestigious fellowships\, including the Leverhulme Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music and the Edison Visiting Fellowship at the British Library. \nGuided by principal teachers György Pauk\, Yair Kless\, and Atis Bankas\, Sadie has also benefited from the mentorship of Ivry Gitlis\, Ida Haendel\, and Ferenc Rados. As an educator\, she teaches violin and chamber music\, has taught at King’s College London\, and offers masterclasses at conservatories and universities in China\, Canada\, and the UK. \nSadie plays on a very fine Italian violin made by Gioffredo Cappa in 1687.

Gayle sang on the Bolero Cruise ship for Regent Holidays. Over the years she has  shared the stage as a guest singer with Jeff Healy\, Jack DeKeyser\, James Gordon\, Jimmy Rankin\, Robbie Lane and many more well-loved Canadians. We want to celebrate with you! \nWhen: Saturday\, November 22\, 2025\, 7pm (programming to begin at 7:30pm) \nWhere: GAC’s new home in Old Quebec Street Shoppes. \nWhy should you come: GAC wouldn’t exist without an arts community to serve\, so we’d like to celebrate with the people who have inspired us for 50 years. There’s also a chance that GAC has supported you in your Guelph arts life\, whether that’s as an organization that got its start with support from GAC many years ago\, or as an individual who has shown in our gallery space\, received an award\, participated in our mentorship program or Art on the Street\, or any other things over the past 50 years. \nWe’re also unveiling the new “Sally Wismer Gallery” that night\, named after GAC’s longtime Executive Director\, volunteer and friend\, so maybe you’d like to come and celebrate that too. \nBasically\, if you love the arts\, you love our community\, and you love a chance to gather with friends in the sector\, this is the place for you. \nWe’re calling the event “folk formal”\, meaning all are welcome to come as formally (or informally) dressed as they’d like\, and the night’s program will feature dance\, spoken word/performance arts\, and musical performances\, video screenings\, as well as a chance for attendees to participate in a community craft project (beading) and a community literature project\, where they will be encouraged to write down their favourite Guelph arts memories from the past 50 years with the intention of publishing a keepsake book. \nAttendees may enjoy beverages from a cash bar and mocktail bar\, and snacks will be served. \nThere will be an in-person 50/50 raffle at the event\, and people may also make an optional donation when they RSVP to attend (guelpharts.ca/gacgac)\, or contribute to GAC’s ongoing donation appeal online by visiting guelpharts.ca/about/donate. \nWe’re so grateful to all of you who have shaped GAC over the past 50 years\, and who will continue to shape us through the next 50.
