SUMMARY:Audio Feedback as a Creative Tool
DESCRIPTION:Audio feedback can be an unbounded fury that screeches\, thunders\, and pierces the air\, but within its chaos lives vast potential for dynamic sonic behaviours and colour. In this workshop\, participants will learn the fundamentals of working with feedback in an eardrum-friendly way while maintaining its liveliness. Topics will include tools and techniques for safely and creatively interacting with audio feedback\, notable feedback artists\, works\, and instruments\, and non-audio uses of feedback. Participants will have opportunities for hands-on experience with feedback using microphones\, speakers\, contact mics and exciters\, feedback instruments\, and various processing tools. Working with feedback suggests an entangled understanding of sound that may be of particular interest to artists working in sound art\, media art\, and experimental music. \nFacilitated by Dave Riedstra \nExperience Level: Beginner \nPlease email workshops@edvideo.org with any questions and/or accessibility concerns.

DESCRIPTION:July 24 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\, Guelph Civic Museum \n5pm Doors\, 7pm Showtime \nMore info here \nClose your eyes and you might just imagine you’re in New Orleans on a hot summer night! \nThe Dufferin Groove bring their cool\, cozy\, and cheerful Trad Jazz vibe to the Civic Museum patio\, reviving music from the 1920s and 30s by greats like Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, and Joe “King” Oliver. \nGather your favourite people\, grab a cool drink\, and settle in for an evening of timeless tunes. \nAdmission by donation starts at 5 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. Cash bar available. \nAbout the Artists\nLaurent Humeau (trumpet\, clarinet\, soprano\, vocals)\, Jared Higgins (tenor banjo)\, and Ashleigh Rose (tuba) \nLaurent Humeau (France) started playing guitar at an early age with his father\, fell in love with the music of New Orleans\, and taught himself soprano saxophone\, clarinet\, and trumpet. His love for performing the music of the greats\, like Louis Armstrong\, Johnny Dodds\, Django Reinhardt\, and Sydney Bechet\, has taken him around the world. He leads multiple projects in Canada and Europe including the Jungle Jazz Band\, and is delighted to be returning to the Guelph Civic Museum. \nAshleigh Rose (Canada)\, is a classically trained pianist and saxophonist and grand-daughter of the founder of the Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra. She transitioned to tuba and sousaphone within the fanfare culture of southern Europe and later the brass band culture of Berlin\, Germany. She has played with the Titubanda (Rome)\, Salsa Azul (Berlin) the Berlin Brass Caravan (Berlin)\, Marching Disorder (Toronto)\, and The Happy Pals (Toronto). \nJared Higgins (Canada) is a Toronto local who has been playing professionally in the scene since graduating Humber College in 2016. Since then\, he has become ubiquitous in the Toronto swing music scene\, playing with acts like Trombone Charlotte\, The Tap Room Gang\, Tak Arikushi\, The Happy Pals\, and more.

DESCRIPTION:Jerzy Kaplanek violin\, Jeremy Bell violin\, Christine Vlajk viola\, Katie Schlaikjer cello\, with guest pianist Ken Gee \nPROGRAM: Beethoven Quartet No. 8 in E minor\, Op. 59\, No. 2 (“Razumovsky”); Penderecki String Quartet No. 3\, “Leaves of an Unwritten Diary” (2008); Dvořák Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major\, Op. 81 \nCelebrating its 40th anniversary\, the Penderecki String Quartet returns to Guelph Musicfest. The PSQ began its career as winner of the Penderecki Prize at the National Chamber Music Competition in Łódź\, Poland in 1986. Now based in Waterloo\, Ontario\, where it has been Quartet-in-Residence at Wilfrid Laurier University since 1991\, The Penderecki String Quartet has become one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles of their generation. The four Penderecki musicians (now originating from Poland\, Canada\, and the USA) bring their varied yet collective experience to create performances that demonstrate their “remarkable range of technical excellence and emotional sweep” (Toronto\, Globe and Mail). \nThe PSQ’s international performing schedule has included appearances in New York (Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall)\, Amsterdam (Concertgebouw)\, Hong Kong (Academy for the Arts)\, Los Angeles (REDCAT Hall at Disney Center)\, St. Petersburg (Sheremetev Palace)\, the Adam Festival in New Zealand\, and throughout Europe in Rome\, Madrid\, Paris\, Belgrade\, Prague\, Krakow\, Vilnius\, and Zagreb. The PSQ has also toured extensively in Mexico\, Australia\, Venezuela\, Brazil\, Colombia\, and across Canada. Dedicated educators\, the PSQ have been recent guests at Bloomington\, Indiana University’s String Academy; the Beijing Conservatory; the University of Southern California (Los Angeles); the University of British Columbia in Vancouver; and at their partner universities in Osnabrück\, Germany and Lyon\, France. To this day\, the PSQ is a devoted champion of the music of our time\, having premiered over 100 new works from composers in Canada and abroad. \nPenderecki Quartet’s large discography includes over three dozen recordings\, including the chamber music repertoire of Beethoven and Brahms on both the Marquis and Eclectra labels\, as well as the first Canadian release of the six Béla Bartók quartets. Their disc of Marjan Mozetich’s “Lament in the Trampled Garden” won the 2010 JUNO Award for Best Composition. In October 2013\, the PSQ worked with Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki on his Third Quartet (2008) and performed it at Symphony Space in New York City on the occasion of his 80th birthday. This was followed by the recording of Penderecki’s Third Quartet along with quartets of Norbert Palej on the Marquis label. In 2022\, the PSQ was featured in Howard Shore’s soundtrack to David Cronenberg’s film Crimes of the Future. The Penderecki Quartet has performed with diverse artists such as Atar Arad\, Jeremy Menuhin\, Stewart Goodyear\, James Campbell and has recently appeared with jazz saxophonist Jane Bunnett\, jazz pianists Egberto Gismonti\, Don Thomson and David Braid\, pipa virtuoso Ching Wong\, Dancetheatre David Earle\, Pentaedre Wind Quintet\, actor Colin Fox\, and New York turntable artist DJ Spooky. \nThe Penderecki Quartet continue to be active members of the Faculty of Music at Laurier University\, where they have built the string program to be one of the top programs in Canada\, attracting an international body of students. Their annual Quartetfest at Laurier is an intensive study seminar and concert series that has featured such ensembles as the Tokyo\, Fine Arts\, Lafayette\, Miro\, Ying\, and Ariana String Quartets. \nThis is the final concert of the Spring series in Guelph Musicfest’s 20th Anniversary Season!

DESCRIPTION:Eden Mills Music at the Hall welcomes the Wellington Wanderers back to the Eden Mills Community Hall on Saturday\, June 6 at 7:30 pm for an evening brimful of musical favourites guaranteed to keep you on your dancing feet! \nThis will be the fourth performance at the Hall by the Wellington Wanderers\, a group of musicians hailing from Wellington and Halton.  The group has evolved to focus on building an irresistible buffet of dancing and singing along to much-loved song…pop\, country\, rock\, blues\, soul…from the 50’s to the 90’s.  Songs made famous by Creedence Clearwater Revival\, the Beatles\, Eric Clapton\, JJ Cale\, Blue Rodeo\, Elvis and many\, many more! \nThe Wellington Wanderers are led by Steve Noonan (guitar/vocals) and bring to the stage Mark Marchesich (drums)\, Ken Baker (bass/vocals)\, Diane Corlett (ukulele/vocals)\, Neil Board (lead guitar/vocals)\, Phil Gregory (percussion/vocals). \nThe warm wooden floor in the heritage Eden Mills Community Hall has welcomed dance for generations.  Music at the Hall programs concerts and events keep the village of Eden Mills hopping\, and to raise funds for Community Hall operations.  The heritage Hall is known for its excellent acoustics and dance floor.  The Hall is also proud to be carbon neutral!

Mr. Goodyear has performed with and been commissioned by many of the world’s major orchestras and chamber music organizations. Last year\, Orchid Classics released Mr. Goodyear’s recording of his suite for piano and orchestra\, Callaloo\, and his piano sonata. \nHis recent commissions include an orchestral work for the Chineke! Orchestra\, his Piano Quintet for the Penderecki String Quartet\, and a piano work for the Honens Piano Competition. His suite for solo violin\, Solo\, was recorded by violinist Miranda Cuckson on the Urlicht Audiovisual label\, and his work for cello and piano\, The Kapak\, was recorded by cellist Inbal Segev on the Avie Records label. \nMr. Goodyear’s discography includes the complete sonatas and piano concertos of Beethoven\, as well as concertos by Tchaikovsky\, Grieg and Rachmaninov\, an album of Ravel piano works\, and an album entitled For Glenn Gould\, which combines repertoire from Mr. Gould’s US and Montreal debuts. His Rachmaninov recording received a Juno nomination for Best Classical Album for Soloist and Large Ensemble Accompaniment. Mr. Goodyear’s recording of his own transcription of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker (Complete Ballet) was chosen by the New York Times as one of the best classical music recordings of 2015. His discography is released on the Orchid Classics\, Naxos\, Analekta\, Bright Shiny Things\, Marquis Classics\, and Steinway and Sons labels. Mr. Goodyear releases his recording of Prokofiev’s 2nd and 3rd Concertos with Andrew Litton and the BBC Symphony Orchestra\, and the composer’s 7th Sonata\, on Orchid Classics this September 2024. \nRecent highlights were performances at the BBC Proms with the Chineke! Orchestra\, his return to the Phillips Collection (Washington D.C.)\, and performances with the Vancouver and Toronto Symphonies\, the Indianapolis Symphony\, the Rochester Philharmonic\, Frankfurt Museumgesellschaft\, and A Far Cry in Boston. \nThis is the third concert in Guelph Musicfest’s 20th Anniversary Season! Katie Schlaikjer is the new member of the Festival Trio\, as Paul Pulford has now retired from concert performance. Katie is well known as a member of the JUNO-winning Penderecki String Quartet\, quartet-in-residence at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Music in Waterloo\, Ontario. At Laurier\, she serves on the performance faculty\, teaching cello and chamber music. Ken is a Hamilton native and was very involved in the local music scene\, performing\, organizing concerts\, managing a string chamber orchestra\, and serving as a music critic for the Hamilton Spectator. This groundbreaking ensemble features the extraordinary talents of Eric Abramovitz\, the principal clarinetist of the Toronto Symphony and the Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist and arranger\, Drew Jurecka\, virtuosic violinist/vocalist/composer\, Rebekah Wolkstein\, founder/leader of the acclaimed Payadora Ensemble\, Juno-nominated bassist\, Michael Herring and Juno-award winning pianist\, Jeremy Ledbetter. \nThis ensemble is redefining the traditional boundaries of Yiddish music\, blending classical mastery with innovative compositions and soulful arrangements. This band has an exhilarating trajectory. A mere 6 months after Abramovitz and Wolkstein came up with the idea to form a band\, they had a full show of original music and inventive arrangements. DESCRIPTION:RSVP at guelpharts.ca/gacgac \nWhat: The “GACGAC”. Guelph Arts Council Golden Anniversary Celebration. We turned 50. We want to celebrate with you! \nWhen: Saturday\, November 22\, 2025\, 7pm (programming to begin at 7:30pm) \nWhere: GAC’s new home in Old Quebec Street Shoppes. \nWhy should you come: GAC wouldn’t exist without an arts community to serve\, so we’d like to celebrate with the people who have inspired us for 50 years. There’s also a chance that GAC has supported you in your Guelph arts life\, whether that’s as an organization that got its start with support from GAC many years ago\, or as an individual who has shown in our gallery space\, received an award\, participated in our mentorship program or Art on the Street\, or any other things over the past 50 years. \nWe’re also unveiling the new “Sally Wismer Gallery” that night\, named after GAC’s longtime Executive Director\, volunteer and friend\, so maybe you’d like to come and celebrate that too. \nBasically\, if you love the arts\, you love our community\, and you love a chance to gather with friends in the sector\, this is the place for you. \nWe’re calling the event “folk formal”\, meaning all are welcome to come as formally (or informally) dressed as they’d like\, and the night’s program will feature dance\, spoken word/performance arts\, and musical performances\, video screenings\, as well as a chance for attendees to participate in a community craft project (beading) and a community literature project\, where they will be encouraged to write down their favourite Guelph arts memories from the past 50 years with the intention of publishing a keepsake book. \nAttendees may enjoy beverages from a cash bar and mocktail bar\, and snacks will be served. \nThere will be an in-person 50/50 raffle at the event\, and people may also make an optional donation when they RSVP to attend (guelpharts.ca/gacgac)\, or contribute to GAC’s ongoing donation appeal online by visiting guelpharts.ca/about/donate. \nWe’re so grateful to all of you who have shaped GAC over the past 50 years\, and who will continue to shape us through the next 50. DESCRIPTION:On Friday November 21 at 7pm\, join The Speed River Band for a catchy blend of rock originals flavoured with blues and country in Guelph Little Theatre’s “Live In the Lobby” concert series. Fronted by award-winning Guelph songwriter and performer Gayle Ackroyd\, the show features an eclective variety of songs all penned by Ackroyd. She is joined by the fine musicianship of veteran rock players Richie Sarlo (guitar)\, Ed Miller (drums)\, and Daev Mulholland (bass) – bio’s below. The audience will also be treated to the interesting stories behind the writing of the songs. The Speed River Band is a highly entertaining ensemble\, brimming with energy. Their music feels nostalgic yet new\, sharing a memorable evening of live music enjoyable for rock and blues fans alike.\n \nTickets: $20 + tax on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-speed-river-band-tickets-1750647276129\nor at the door.\n\nGAYLE ACKROYD – Vocals/ Guitar. \n“Guitar slinger and blues singer Gayle Ackroyd\, a whole lot of tender and a little bit tough” as Lenny Stoute of the Toronto Star once described her\, “belts out the blue eyed soul with intense energy\, grit and class all at the same time. Gayle’s passion for songwriting and playing guitar are evident in the 8 albums of original music she has recorded and released. Originally from Brampton and a graduate of Sheridan College’s Musical Theatre Program\, she has been in hundreds of films as both an extra and actress. Gayle sang on the Bolero Cruise ship for Regent Holidays. Over the years she has  shared the stage as a guest singer with Jeff Healy\, Jack DeKeyser\, James Gordon\, Jimmy Rankin\, Robbie Lane and many more well-loved Canadians. Her current focus is learning classic covers by her favourite female singers\, as well as fronting and writing the rock and blues music of the Speed River Band; Her considerable accolades include the Toronto Arts Council Songwriting Grant to live in Nashville\, the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award\, Honorable Mention for the Ontario Arts Council Songwriting Award\, and being a Q107 Songwriting Competition Top 10 Finalist for Outstanding Concert Performance.  Much more about Gayle at: https://www.singingteacherguelph.com/about.php\n\nED MILLER – Drums / Vocals: Ed played with “Major Hoople’s Boarding House” who had hit records with “I’m Running After You” and “You Girl”. He spent some time playing with “Jack London and The Sparrows” in the Yorkville Village days.\n\nRICHIE SARLO – Guitar: This extraordinary guitar player has been at it since he was 9 years old. His passion for playing\, and recording caught the notice of Bo Diddly\, Phil Sussan of Ozzy Osbourne band\, Roger Kapps {Pat Benetar’s bassist / co-writer)\, John-Luc Ponty (also violinist for Frank Zappa); all of with whom he played on albums in LA and toured the USA.
