DESCRIPTION:Guelph Musicfest 2024 presents virtuoso pianist Stewart Goodyear. Proclaimed “a phenomenon” by the Los Angeles Times and “one of the best pianists of his generation” by the Philadelphia Inquirer\, Stewart Goodyear is an accomplished concert pianist\, improviser and composer. Mr. Goodyear has performed with and has been commissioned by many of the major orchestras and chamber music organizations worldwide. Stewart Goodyear performs an all-Gershwin concert\, including the solo version of Rhapsody in Blue (in celebration of the 100th anniversary of this famous showpiece). This is part of PIANO DUO series with Sheng Cai playing Rachmaninov\, Beethoven\, Chopin and Morawetz on May 31\, available at a special price.

It’s a work of breath and movement and of heartfelt listening.  \nThe gentle conversation of this première performance has been made possible by the Canada Council for the Arts and the kind offices of composer James Rolfe (https://www.jamesrolfe.ca)\, who edited our musical scores. \nA chapbook with new words by Luke Hathaway and an afterword by Daniel Cabena is printed and published by Karen Schindler\, Baseline Press (https://www.baselinepress.ca). \nFor more information: animaearlymusic@gmail.com  \nANIMA (https://www.animaearlymusic.com) a metamorphosing ensemble\, is the gathering-place in art of scholar-singer Daniel Cabena and trans poet/librettist Luke Hathaway. It is a place of queer friendship and sustaining story\, a place where old texts and melodies are animated by spirit and voice. Our work is inspired by Dan’s genderqueer voice and performance history; by early-music sources which suggest new and fabulous possibilities for love and community; and by Luke’s trans-mystical poetry\, in which masculine\, feminine\, and non-binary voices often speak as multiple aspects of a single person. Working together\, we create and commission new works of text and music that are in conversation with early sources and soundworlds. We put these works up on their feet in novel performance contexts (workshops\, teach-ins\, touring programs …). We collaborate with other artists whose worlds of sound and spirit enrich our own.

Recently described as “having the inner passion paired with Rubinstein’s nonchalance” by Thüringer Allgemeine in Germany\, Canadian pianist Sheng Cai has embraced the keyboard tradition\, which epitomizes the greatness of the romantic virtuoso. His performances of major keyboard works of the past centuries have touched audiences and won the praise of critics on four continents. He was featured in the Season Opening Concert of the Guelph Symphony Orchestra with a brilliant performance of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no. 2. Sheng Cai returns to Guelph Musicfest with a solo recital featuring music by Rachmaninov plus Beethoven\, Chopin and Morawetz. This is part of PIANO DUO series with Stewart Goodyear playing all-Gershwin on June 7\, available at a special price.

DESCRIPTION:Guelph Musicfest 2024 presents The Festival Trio. Violinist Sadie Fields (Brussels) and cellist Paul Pulford (NB) join pianist/director Ken Gee for the season opener. Paul\, Sadie and Ken are the founding members of the trio\, and look forward to their annual reunion! The program pairs two of the greatest trios ever written – the invigorating Beethoven Trio no. 1 in E-flat and the sublime Schubert Trio no. 1 in B flat – with a mesmerizing and magical trio by British composer Charlotte Bray. NOTE: Reserved Seating is SOLD OUT. A few standby seats may be available. The program is also being present at the K-W Chamber Music Society on Thursday May 23 at 7 pm at Keffer Memorial Chapel\, Wilfrid Laurier University. Tickets $35 adults & $10 students at the door.

DESCRIPTION:Eden Mills is proud to present the distinguished Jim Gelcer/Paul Hoffert Trio featuring George Koller on Saturday\, May 4. The performance takes place at 7:30 pm in the Eden Mills Community Hall.  The trio features Lighthouse band co-founder Paul Hoffert on piano\, Jim Gelcer on drums and George Koller on bass. \nTickets may be purchased in advance here! \nThe Trio will wow music lovers with an eclectic and varied show filled with singular\, inimitable compositions drawn from jazz and pop classics and from their two critically acclaimed albums – “How High the Bird” and “Jim and Paul with Glenn and Ludwig.” Jim Gelcer adds this tantalizing hint: “I don’t want to give away too many surprises\, but there might be some homages to Lighthouse as well.” \nAudio Link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fH8Tt8ltD84  \nHoffert\, one of the founding members of the seminal 1970s Canadian rock band Lighthouse\, is a prolific composer\, author\, academic as well as a recipient of the Order of Canada. Gelcer\, a renowned jazz drummer\, producer and composer\, has lent his talent to artists ranging from rocker Lee Aaron to the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band. Bassist Koller is a multi-instrumentalist with an ear for jazz and world music\, who has performed for musicians including Peter Gabriel\, Holly Cole and Chaka Khan. \nTogether\, these three living legends of Canadian music complement each other’s musical gifts by breezing through intricately arranged classical and jazz pieces seamlessly. Their 2018 album\, Jim and Paul play Glenn and Ludwig\, saw the group play thoroughly scintillating\, jazz-infused\, original versions of Beethoven music through the lens of Canadian icon Glenn Gould. \n“Music at the Hall” programs concerts and events to keep Eden Mills hopping\, and to raise funds for the Community Hall operations.  The heritage Hall is proud to be carbon neutral!

DESCRIPTION:Some of the most quintessential music of the season returns to River Run Centre this winter in A Very Charlie Brown Concert. On Friday\, December 22\, at 7:30 p.m.\, jazz trio Adam Bowman\, Duncan Wilson\, and Tyler Wagler are joined by The Kingsbury Music Singers children’s choir for a performance of the beloved music from A Charlie Brown Christmas. \n The trio is led by Adam Bowman\, drummer and percussionist\, who has played with JUNO winners Kellylee Evans and Carlos Morgan\, indie music trailblazer Ember Swift\, and country-folk songstress Dawn Langstroth. Nationally\, his accolades include three JUNO Award nominations\, and locally\, recognition as Guelph’s 40 Under 40. Duncan Wilson is an up-and-coming pianist from Orillia who embraces forward-thinking jazz while maintaining deep roots in jazz tradition. Tyler Wagler is an in-demand performer\, session musician\, and educator\, best known as a founding member of the roots-reggae band The Human Rights. He has two EPs as a singer-songwriter and is also the Musical Director of The Guelph Youth Jazz Ensemble. \nThe trio is joined by the Kingsbury Music Singers children’s choir\, led by Shannon Kingsbury. A singer-songwriter\, harpist\, and music educator\, Kingsbury is a passionate member of Guelph’s arts scene\, presenting shows at Hillside Festival\, Guelph Jazz Festival’s Nuit Blanche\, and numerous theatres\, galleries\, and museums across Ontario. \n“For as long as I can remember\, A Charlie Brown Christmas has been the soundtrack of the holidays for me\,” says trio leader and percussionist\, Adam Bowman. “There are great jazz albums and great Christmas albums\, but very few that are both. The holidays can mean different things to different people. From the magic of youthful excitement to nostalgic reflection\, from melancholy memories to great delight\, this music visits all of those emotions.” \nThe soundtrack of the 1966 Emmy Award-winning special\, composed by American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi\, is one of the most memorable aspects of the film.
