SUMMARY:ANIMA presents :  The Sign of Jonas; An Apocalypse Folktale by Luke Hathaway & Benton Roark
DESCRIPTION:ANIMA Early Music is thrilled to present The Sign of Jonas; An Apocalypse Folktale\, with texts by Luke Hathaway & music by Benton Roark. This (55-minute) work will be performed by Mother Country\, a beautiful roots music ensemble led by Benton Roark (voice\, banjo\, guitar & piano) and featuring Andrew Ivens (voice\, mandolin\, guitar\, piano & lap steel)\, Phil Albert (voice & bass) & Chris Hull (percussion). Mother Country will be joined by ANIMA’s artist co-directors\, Daniel Cabena (voice & fiddle) & Luke Hathaway (spoken word). \nHere are a few notes about this work from composer Benton Roark: \nSparse in construction\, timeless in imagery\, arcane in meaning\, and proto-mythical in characters and narrative\, The Sign of Jonas superimposes personal apocalypse on environmental and cultural collapse. It imagines a song cycle lost and found: a musical manuscript orphaned by the cataclysms of the 21st century\, and rewakened to ritual life far in the future. The fragmentary text speaks of travelling\, of death and rebirth\, of decay and regeneration; the music is a ritualized series of part songs\, responsorials\, chants\, chorales\, and incantations\, performed as a folk-music-pageant-mystery-play\, complete with communal singing and other forms of audience participation. When our lives end\, they continue in one another.

SUMMARY:Guelph’s Eclectic Vinyl Orchestra Brings the Swing Back to Eden Mills!
DESCRIPTION:Music at the Hall is proud to present Guelph’s Eclectic Vinyl Orchestra on Saturday\, March 1 at 7:30 pm at the Eden Mills Community Hall. EVO is a high energy dance band playing music from the 30s\, 40s\, 50s\, and 60s.  Doors open at 7 pm. \nSince 2015 the infectious power of this four-piece orchestra has been moving crowds with their upright bass\, glittering saxophones\, tight harmonies\, polished spats\, and crisp button-downs. \nThese guys play Etta James\, Ray Charles\, Little Richard\, and Laverne Baker. Their styles are klezmer and swing\, New York ritz\, Saturday night gospel\, New Orleans jazz\, Philadelphia soul\, Chicago southside\, and St. Louis blues. They also perform several original songs. In 2017\, EVO recorded the album “Last Chance to Dance.” \nThe Band’s stomping grounds include the Red Brick Café and Manhattan’s in Guelph\, Riverfest\, Hillside\, Elora’s Spring Fling Dance\, many venues in Southern Ontario as well as fund-raisers for important causes. \nBand members include lead Stu Peterson on piano and guitar; Jim Duffield\, horn virtuoso playing a number of different saxophones\, clarinet\, even piccolo; Kerry Mullen grooving on drums; and Matty Cooper\, the boogie bass-man. \nEVO website: www.eclecticvo.com \nMusic at the Hall programs concerts and events to keep the village of Eden Mills hopping\, and to raise funds for Community Hall operations. DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a unique\, intimate evening with local legends\, SHEBAD\, at Otherwise Studios for another live performance life drawing event! \nThis event will give you a behind-the-scenes peak at what a SHEBAD rehearsal looks and sounds like\, while learning how to draw a moving figure. \nThe rehearsal format and drawing class are carefully curated together to create an enjoyable art & music experience that match each other’s energy. There will be guided demos every step of the way\, teaching techniques to draw and problem-solve quickly\, lean into intuition\, and capture moving shape\, form\, and light. \nJoin us for this rare\, stripped back rehearsal setting and artistic event. Come to draw\, or just enjoy the sweet sounds of the band. This event has a sliding scale ticket system\, please pay what you can and support local artists! \nAll materials will be supplied\, no experience necessary. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials if they wish. There will be both seated and standing options. Whether you plan to draw or just come and listen\, we welcome you into this evening of good vibes and great music. \nAbout the band\nSHEBAD is the creative spirit of visual artist and vocalist Claire Voy and multi-instrumentalist Ciccio Spagnolo. This Guelph-based music project plays on the exploratory realm of Indie Soul\, characterized by jazz-influenced melodies\, danceable basslines\, and Claire’s transcendent voice. Their sound is a synthesis of influences like Stevie Wonder\, Hiatus Kaiyote\, Amy Winehouse\, Daft Punk\, and Erykah Badu\, making the music compelling and curious with lyrics from the heart. CBC’s Laila Biali aptly describes their sound as “Music that exists in a sonic world of its own”.

Concert from 2pm – 4pm. \nGATHERING SPARKS is the graceful collision of Eve Goldberg and Jane Lewis—musical friends who bonded over finely tuned harmonies and the craft of songwriting. Their inclusive approach embraces folk\, pop\, blues and gospel influences tastefully played on acoustic guitar\, piano\, accordion\, and ukulele. They were nominated for a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year\, and won the 2019 Folk Music Ontario “Songs From the Heart” award. You will come to listen\, and walk away singing! \nCHERYL PRASHKER studied classical percussion at McGill University in Montreal\, Canada\, where she was born and raised. She has toured Canada\, U.S. Europe and Russia. She spent many years in NY City where she honed her skills of playing anything from Rock and Roll\, Klezmer\, to Celtic as well as Middle Eastern music. She now uses her special style of percussion to enhance the music of such artists as Eric Andersen\, Jonathan Edwards\, Pat Wictor\, Tracy Grammer\, Full Frontal Folk and her own Celtic Roots Music group RUNA. \nJAMES GORDON has been there. He’s done that. He has had a remarkably diverse and resilient career in the Canadian cultural sector. As a solo singer-songwriter and with the ground-breaking trio Tamarack\, he’s recorded 42 albums and toured relentlessly around the world. He’s written for symphony orchestras\, musical theatre and dance works\, scored films\, and for more than ten years was heard on CBC radio as songwriter-in-residence for the ’Basic Black’ and ‘Ontario Morning’ programs. A list of requested items can be found below. \nMORE ABOUT CHALMERS: \nChalmers Community Services Centre (CCSC) is a registered charity that is the only no-proof-of-income-needed food pantry in the City of Guelph – operating Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, and Fridays. Due to the pandemic severely limiting city-wide programs and supports for families\, as well as income streams for many caregivers\, CCS has seen numbers of first-time food pantry users increase exponentially. This was showcased as 1 in 7 residents in Guelph reported living in a food insecure household\, with 1 in 6 reported being severely food insecure (2021). This has been perpetuated by increasing costs at the grocery stores on food\, hygiene products\, and basic household necessities. Take a deep dive into improvisational singing\, and experience the thrill of creating spontaneous music. We’ll explore different ways to create vocal music individually and as a group\, based mainly on the Vocal River exercises created by Rhiannon.\nWe’ll work on inventing melody as well as adding harmony and syncopated parts. It will involve musical creativity\, deep listening\, collaboration\, blending voices\, stretching our comfort zones\, and supporting one another.\nThe main requirement is that you can match pitch at least relatively well\, and that you are fairly comfortable sharing your voice in a group (since there will be times when your voice will be heard alone). If this is pushing your comfort zone\, but you want to work on it\, that’s great too. But this one is going to be very special indeed. \nThe Roaring 20s was a decade of incredible energy and creativity around the world\, particularly in Paris as well as North America. Like now\, it was an amazing comeback from the great influenza pandemic of 1918 with Jazz having big influence on “Classical” music. This is a chance to hear Sadie perform the Vivaldi in Canada after captivating European audiences with her performances there. It will feature an original continuo arrangement for piano and cello. Please book in advance at https://www.edenmills.ca/calendar \n“A man of formidable talents” (Charlottetown Evening Patriot) Valdy has been singing\, recording and touring for more than 50 years. In fact\, his Eden Mills performance is part of a breath-taking national tour this season that takes him from Newfoundland to British Columbia. \nValdy was born Paul-Valdemar Horsdal in Ottawa. His career as a singer/songwriter and guitarist has taken him around the world. He is especially remembered for ‘Play Me a Rock and Roll Song’\, his bitter-sweet memory of finding himself\, a relaxed and amiable story-teller\, facing a rambunctious audience at the Aldergrove Rock Festival circa 1968. \nSince then he has sold almost half a million copies of his 13 albums\, has two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year)\, a total of seven Juno nominations and four Gold albums to his credit. He is a member of the Order of Canada\, a musician “as generous as he is talented who performs frequently at charity events and is a long-time advocate of literacy in Canada.” \nValdy songs include ‘A Good Song’ (notably performed by Quincy Jones under the title ‘Just a Man’)\, ‘Peter & Lou’\, ‘Yes I Can’\, ‘Renaissance’\, and ‘Sonny’s Dream.’ His recent CDs include ‘Contenders’\, a collaboration with friend and fellow singer/songwriter\, Gary Fjellgaard\, and a solo release ‘Viva Valdy: Live at Last’\, a two-CD package\, one live\, one studio\, with a total of 25 tunes. \nMusic at the Hall programs concerts and events to keep the village of Eden Mills hopping\, and to raise funds for Community Hall operations. The heritage Hall is known for its excellent acoustics and dance floor. The Hall is also proud to be carbon neutral!
