SUMMARY:Songbird: an Unconventional Choir by Joni NehRita at Art Not Shame
DESCRIPTION:Art Not Shame is excited to host local musician\, song-writer\, and producer\, Joni NehRita in offering an 8-week community choir workshop called\, Songbird: An Unconventional Choir. \nSongbird will invite community members to participate in the art of choral singing\, regardless of past choral experience\, musical skill or ability. Over the course of 8-weeks\, participants will learn to sing in harmony with others as they explore music that engages with themes of social justice\, equity\, and change and across multiple genres (e.g. pop\, reggae\, calypso\, gospel\, and jazz). NehRita adopts a “Música do Círculo” methodology\, an approach that uses improvisation\, body percussion\, movement and play.  \nCentring inclusivity\, Songbirds is open to people of all genders and uses neutral names for different choral positions (e.g. ‘low\, mid-low\, and high’ instead of ‘bass\, tenor\, and soprano’) to support inclusion. SUMMARY:Applications for the Pay it Forward Arts Fund now open through Art Not Shame
DESCRIPTION:The Pay it Forward Arts Fund (PIFAF) is a gift of artist Barbara Salsberg Mathews and her husband Bruce Mathews. The award helps local artists\, in any discipline\, fund art projects that “pay it forward” and benefit the community. \nThe PIFAF takes many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. It was designed to encourage artists to rise to the challenge and “pay it forward” by using their talents to help others and the Guelph community. The PIFAF runs for a total of four years. Art Not Shame will administer the fund with the goal of amplifying local community-engaged arts projects. \nWho is Eligible \nAny artist (or group of artists) age 18 or over\, working in Guelph and is a permanent citizen of Canada or persons upon whom refugee protection has been conferred\, and who are legally entitled to work in Ontario. They are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that pay it forward and benefit the community. A preference may be given to those who demonstrate a long-standing connection to the Guelph community. All artistic mediums are welcome to apply. \nWhat is Eligible \nGuelph-Wellington area artists are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that focus on improving lives and thereby enriching our community. The award could take many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. \nThese projects must be original in nature (this fund does not support events\, projects or programs that have already been established) and cannot have begun prior to the award being granted. The project should be able to be completed within the funding requested. \nAmount of Award \nThis grant will fund one or more projects of up to $6\,000.

DESCRIPTION:  \nIn gratitude for receiving this year’s Kenny Doren award\, annais linares will mount era of an end\, a newly developed sound and visual installation\, in the Ed Video gallery. Earlier this year\, annais received news that her landlords were returning back to their Guelph home – meaning she would have to move. She arrived at The Ward in September 2020 from California to begin grad school and hardly knew anyone. Since then\, she’s grown to love Guelph and all its beings! This installation is a kiss goodbye to her Johnston house which held her in the darkest of isolation-times\, as well as a goodbye to The Ward\, Guelph\, and all the relationships she made throughout the last four years overall. \nExhibition Reception: Thursday August 22nd\, 7-9pm

DESCRIPTION:Bandology’s annual Band Camp is a week-long day camp for keen music students in grades 7-12 who want to improve their musical skills in the summer. \nLed by some of the best conductors\, clinicians and music teachers in southern Ontario\, teenage campers  at Band Camp enjoy using top-notch music facilities to participate in warm-ups and chorales\, break-out into sectionals and small groups\, and rehearse as a full concert band. There’s also lots of fun with games\, camp projects and team-building activities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the end of the week\, campers have a final day pizza party while preparing for a free mini-concert for parents and friends. \nBand Camp Junior is a week-long day camp for kids in grades 2-6 who want to explore their love of music through games and demonstrations with new friends. \nAt Band Camp Junior\, kids have fun with hands-on introductory workshops with some cool instruments and experience a wide variety of music styles. Led by keen musicians and educators\, campers enjoy participating a wide variety of musical activities\, from bucket drumming to body percussion to music theory and everything in between. \nCampers will try out different types of instruments alongside dedicated music mentors. There’s also typical camp games\, projects and team-building activities. At the end of the week\, campers take part our end-of-week free mini-concert for parents and friends.

DESCRIPTION:Art on the Street is co-presented with Downtown Guelph Business Association and features contemporary fine art and craft. The juried event has grown since 2003 to become Guelph’s largest outdoor exhibition and sale. Art on the Street spotlights talent within the regional arts community and offers a fresh-air art experience for Guelph’s residents and visitors. Each year\, established and emerging artists showcase their works to several thousand visitors in temporary\, open-air studios. DESCRIPTION:Internationally-renowned violinist Jerzy Kaplanek has established himself as a chamber musician\, member of the celebrated Penderecki String Quartet\, soloist\, dedicated teacher\, adjudicator\, artistic director of QuartetFest and lately as a jazz violinist. \nWith his sublime\, soulful sound\, the Kaplanek Quartet will explore a combination of jazz standards and originals. They will introduce us to the varied and powerful tunes by iconic jazz violinists Jean-Luc Ponty\, Didier Lockwood\, Zbigniew Seifert and Adam Baldych. Spend an evening at the Jazz Room going on this musical journey with Kaplanek as he brings the high-powered jazz-fusion vibe that suits his violin playing so perfectly. \nFor the “warm-up” act\, Mr. Kaplanek is joined by pianist Ken Gee in Ravel’s Sonata no. 1 for violin and piano\, opus posthumous.

Proclaimed “a phenomenon” by the Los Angeles Times and “one of the best pianists of his generation” by the Philadelphia Inquirer\, Stewart Goodyear is an accomplished concert pianist\, improviser and composer. Mr. Goodyear has performed with and has been commissioned by many of the major orchestras and chamber music organizations worldwide. Stewart Goodyear performs an all-Gershwin concert\, including the solo version of Rhapsody in Blue (in celebration of the 100th anniversary of this famous showpiece). This is part of PIANO DUO series with Sheng Cai playing Rachmaninov\, Beethoven\, Chopin and Morawetz on May 31\, available at a special price.

It is a place of queer friendship and sustaining story\, a place where old texts and melodies are animated by spirit and voice. Our work is inspired by Dan’s genderqueer voice and performance history; by early-music sources which suggest new and fabulous possibilities for love and community; and by Luke’s trans-mystical poetry\, in which masculine\, feminine\, and non-binary voices often speak as multiple aspects of a single person. Working together\, we create and commission new works of text and music that are in conversation with early sources and soundworlds. We put these works up on their feet in novel performance contexts (workshops\, teach-ins\, touring programs …). We collaborate with other artists whose worlds of sound and spirit enrich our own.

The performance takes place at 7:30 pm in the Eden Mills Community Hall.  The trio features Lighthouse band co-founder Paul Hoffert on piano\, Jim Gelcer on drums and George Koller on bass. \nTickets may be purchased in advance here! \nThe Trio will wow music lovers with an eclectic and varied show filled with singular\, inimitable compositions drawn from jazz and pop classics and from their two critically acclaimed albums – “How High the Bird” and “Jim and Paul with Glenn and Ludwig.” Jim Gelcer adds this tantalizing hint: “I don’t want to give away too many surprises\, but there might be some homages to Lighthouse as well.” \nAudio Link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fH8Tt8ltD84  \nHoffert\, one of the founding members of the seminal 1970s Canadian rock band Lighthouse\, is a prolific composer\, author\, academic as well as a recipient of the Order of Canada. Gelcer\, a renowned jazz drummer\, producer and composer\, has lent his talent to artists ranging from rocker Lee Aaron to the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band. Bassist Koller is a multi-instrumentalist with an ear for jazz and world music\, who has performed for musicians including Peter Gabriel\, Holly Cole and Chaka Khan. \nTogether\, these three living legends of Canadian music complement each other’s musical gifts by breezing through intricately arranged classical and jazz pieces seamlessly. Their 2018 album\, Jim and Paul play Glenn and Ludwig\, saw the group play thoroughly scintillating\, jazz-infused\, original versions of Beethoven music through the lens of Canadian icon Glenn Gould. \n“Music at the Hall” programs concerts and events to keep Eden Mills hopping\, and to raise funds for the Community Hall operations.  The heritage Hall is proud to be carbon neutral!
