SUMMARY:Guelph Musicfest Encore: Zemlinsky String Quartet (from Prague)
DESCRIPTION:Guelph Musicfest welcomes the internationally-renowned Zemlinsky String Quartet from Prague for its first-ever performance in Guelph. The quartet will appear at the Recital Hall of the Guelph Youth Music Centre. \nPROGRAM: Beethoven’s Quartet in F minor “Serioso” Op. 95; Janáček’s Quartet No. 1 “Kreutzer Sonata”; and Dvořák’s famous “American” Quartet\, Op. 96 in F major. \nThis concert is the first of Guelph Musicfest’s Fall Encore series\, which includes a recital by violinist Sadie Fields (from Brussels\, Belgium) with festival director/pianist Ken Gee on Friday\, November 7\, at the GYMC. More information at https://www.guelphmusicfest.ca \nFounded in 1994 while the members were still students\, the Zemlinsky Quartet has become a much lauded example of the Czech string quartet tradition. The Zemlinsky Quartet won the First Grand Prize at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in 2010. They have also been awarded top prizes at the Banff International String Quartet Competition (2007)\, the Prague Spring International Music Competition (2005)\, and the London International String Quartet Competition (2006)\, where they also received the Audience Prize. The Quartet was the recipient of the Alexander Zemlinsky Advancement Award in 2008. Other notable prizes include the Beethoven International Competition (1999)\, the New Talent Bratislava (2003)\, the Martinů Foundation String Quartet Competition (2004)\, and the Prize of the Czech Chamber Music Society (2005). In the 2016/17 season\, the Zemlinsky Quartet was appointed as the residential ensemble of the Czech Chamber Music Society. \nWhile students at the Prague Conservatory and the Academy of Performing Arts Prague\, the ensemble was coached by members of renowned Czech string quartets\, including the Talich\, Prague\, Kocian and Pražák Quartets. The ensemble also participated in several master classes\, including ProQuartet in France and the Sommerakademie in Reichenau\, Austria\, where they were awarded First Prize for the best interpretation of a work by Janáček. From 2005 to 2008\, the quartet studied with Walter Levin\, the first violinist of the LaSalle Quartet. Their recent mentor has been Josef Klusoň\, the violist of the Pražák Quartet. \nThe performance also pairs with a concert by the Zemlinsky Quartet for the KW Chamber Music Society on Friday October 24 featuring Zemlinsky’s Quartet No. 1 in A major\, Op. 4; Smetana’s Quartet No. 1 in E minor “From My Life”; and Janáček’s Quartet No. 2 “Intimate Letters.” More information at https://k-wcms.com

DESCRIPTION:Fall Improv Workshop Series by the Friendly Heretic Theatre Company\n\nIn the theme of shedding leaves and autumn transformation\, we’re offering an exciting workshop series! What does it feel like to loosen up rigid patterns and beliefs about theatre\, about improv\, and our selves? What are the unique rewards of trying on new characters and strategies? What are the unique rewards of honest improv\, whether it comes out as comedic or not? What discoveries can we make when we let go of what we think we know?\n\nFor 6 weeks we’ll combine improv theory\, games and scene work to bring out fresh perspectives. This series is just as much meant for those brand new to improv as it is for those with plenty of improv experience. We all have some firm-ish beliefs about this artform\, which means that we all have exciting new discoveries to make within it. In the spirit of improvisation\, the unique gifts of everyone who joins the series will help to shape it. The only prerequisites are: an interest to learn and explore\, an enthusiasm for camaraderie\, and the willingness to try something new (regardless of your current experience level).\n\nClasses will be taught by Kevin Nunn.\n\nKevin is a professional and brilliant improv performer and teacher on a decades long journey. He aspires to ignite the flame of improv passion in as many hearts as he can. He is all around good human with an autistic slant and an absolutely undying passion for improv theory and the art of discovery. Kevin now makes his living in a non-theatrical profession\, and in the spirit of separating art and commerce as much as possible he refuses to profit financially from teaching improv. Part lecture and part workshop\, his classes are participatory and inspiring as students join in an exploration of the expanding possibilities of improvisation.\n\nDates & Times: Mondays 7pm-9pm\, Oct 20th – Nov 24th\n\nLocation: 10Carden Shared Space\, in the Activity Room\n\nCost: Pay what you can\, even if that’s $0. DESCRIPTION:  \n\nFor the Guelph Arts Council’s very first event in our new office\, our summer co-op student Claire is proud to be organizing a Youth Open Mic to give youth a platform to showcase their art and connect with other young artists in the Guelph community. Because it can be intimidating to perform and share your art with other people\, especially when you’re young\, Claire hopes this event will help youth gain confidence and connect with other young artists in the community. She is very grateful to the Guelph Arts Council team in providing the space\, and guiding her through the process of creating this event.  \nThe Youth Open Mic will be taking place on July 31st from 7-9pm at the new home of the Guelph Arts Council\, in the Old Quebec St Shoppes. While acts are open to artists ages 18 and under\, all ages are welcome and encouraged to come and watch the show. DESCRIPTION:Payadora is an award-winning ensemble that performs its own arrangements of a core repertoire drawing from Argentinian/Uruguayan traditions (tangos\, milongas\, waltzes\, and folk music such as the Zamba and chacarera)\, as well as original songs inspired by that tradition. Comprised of musicians who are each musical powerhouses in their own right\, this “superstar group” has combined their profound love of tango with their classical\, jazz and world music backgrounds to create something entirely new. This (55-minute) work will be performed by Mother Country\, a beautiful roots music ensemble led by Benton Roark (voice\, banjo\, guitar & piano) and featuring Andrew Ivens (voice\, mandolin\, guitar\, piano & lap steel)\, Phil Albert (voice & bass) & Chris Hull (percussion). Mother Country will be joined by ANIMA’s artist co-directors\, Daniel Cabena (voice & fiddle) & Luke Hathaway (spoken word). \nHere are a few notes about this work from composer Benton Roark: \nSparse in construction\, timeless in imagery\, arcane in meaning\, and proto-mythical in characters and narrative\, The Sign of Jonas superimposes personal apocalypse on environmental and cultural collapse. It imagines a song cycle lost and found: a musical manuscript orphaned by the cataclysms of the 21st century\, and rewakened to ritual life far in the future. The fragmentary text speaks of travelling\, of death and rebirth\, of decay and regeneration; the music is a ritualized series of part songs\, responsorials\, chants\, chorales\, and incantations\, performed as a folk-music-pageant-mystery-play\, complete with communal singing and other forms of audience participation. When our lives end\, they continue in one another.

There will be guided demos every step of the way\, teaching techniques to draw and problem-solve quickly\, lean into intuition\, and capture moving shape\, form\, and light. \nJoin us for this rare\, stripped back rehearsal setting and artistic event. This Guelph-based music project plays on the exploratory realm of Indie Soul\, characterized by jazz-influenced melodies\, danceable basslines\, and Claire’s transcendent voice. Their sound is a synthesis of influences like Stevie Wonder\, Hiatus Kaiyote\, Amy Winehouse\, Daft Punk\, and Erykah Badu\, making the music compelling and curious with lyrics from the heart. CBC’s Laila Biali aptly describes their sound as “Music that exists in a sonic world of its own”.

Concert from 2pm – 4pm. \nGATHERING SPARKS is the graceful collision of Eve Goldberg and Jane Lewis—musical friends who bonded over finely tuned harmonies and the craft of songwriting. Their inclusive approach embraces folk\, pop\, blues and gospel influences tastefully played on acoustic guitar\, piano\, accordion\, and ukulele. They were nominated for a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year\, and won the 2019 Folk Music Ontario “Songs From the Heart” award. You will come to listen\, and walk away singing! \nCHERYL PRASHKER studied classical percussion at McGill University in Montreal\, Canada\, where she was born and raised. She has toured Canada\, U.S. Europe and Russia. She spent many years in NY City where she honed her skills of playing anything from Rock and Roll\, Klezmer\, to Celtic as well as Middle Eastern music. She now uses her special style of percussion to enhance the music of such artists as Eric Andersen\, Jonathan Edwards\, Pat Wictor\, Tracy Grammer\, Full Frontal Folk and her own Celtic Roots Music group RUNA. \nJAMES GORDON has been there. He’s done that. He has had a remarkably diverse and resilient career in the Canadian cultural sector. As a solo singer-songwriter and with the ground-breaking trio Tamarack\, he’s recorded 42 albums and toured relentlessly around the world. He’s written for symphony orchestras\, musical theatre and dance works\, scored films\, and for more than ten years was heard on CBC radio as songwriter-in-residence for the ’Basic Black’ and ‘Ontario Morning’ programs. Due to the pandemic severely limiting city-wide programs and supports for families\, as well as income streams for many caregivers\, CCS has seen numbers of first-time food pantry users increase exponentially. This was showcased as 1 in 7 residents in Guelph reported living in a food insecure household\, with 1 in 6 reported being severely food insecure (2021). This has been perpetuated by increasing costs at the grocery stores on food\, hygiene products\, and basic household necessities.
