DESCRIPTION:ANIMA Early Music is thrilled to present The Sign of Jonas; An Apocalypse Folktale\, with texts by Luke Hathaway & music by Benton Roark. This (55-minute) work will be performed by Mother Country\, a beautiful roots music ensemble led by Benton Roark (voice\, banjo\, guitar & piano) and featuring Andrew Ivens (voice\, mandolin\, guitar\, piano & lap steel)\, Phil Albert (voice & bass) & Chris Hull (percussion). Mother Country will be joined by ANIMA’s artist co-directors\, Daniel Cabena (voice & fiddle) & Luke Hathaway (spoken word). \nHere are a few notes about this work from composer Benton Roark: \nSparse in construction\, timeless in imagery\, arcane in meaning\, and proto-mythical in characters and narrative\, The Sign of Jonas superimposes personal apocalypse on environmental and cultural collapse. It imagines a song cycle lost and found: a musical manuscript orphaned by the cataclysms of the 21st century\, and rewakened to ritual life far in the future. The fragmentary text speaks of travelling\, of death and rebirth\, of decay and regeneration; the music is a ritualized series of part songs\, responsorials\, chants\, chorales\, and incantations\, performed as a folk-music-pageant-mystery-play\, complete with communal singing and other forms of audience participation. When our lives end\, they continue in one another.

SUMMARY:Guelph’s Eclectic Vinyl Orchestra Brings the Swing Back to Eden Mills!
DESCRIPTION:Music at the Hall is proud to present Guelph’s Eclectic Vinyl Orchestra on Saturday\, March 1 at 7:30 pm at the Eden Mills Community Hall. EVO is a high energy dance band playing music from the 30s\, 40s\, 50s\, and 60s.  Doors open at 7 pm. \nSince 2015 the infectious power of this four-piece orchestra has been moving crowds with their upright bass\, glittering saxophones\, tight harmonies\, polished spats\, and crisp button-downs. \nThese guys play Etta James\, Ray Charles\, Little Richard\, and Laverne Baker. Their styles are klezmer and swing\, New York ritz\, Saturday night gospel\, New Orleans jazz\, Philadelphia soul\, Chicago southside\, and St. Louis blues. They also perform several original songs. In 2017\, EVO recorded the album “Last Chance to Dance.” \nThe Band’s stomping grounds include the Red Brick Café and Manhattan’s in Guelph\, Riverfest\, Hillside\, Elora’s Spring Fling Dance\, many venues in Southern Ontario as well as fund-raisers for important causes. \nBand members include lead Stu Peterson on piano and guitar; Jim Duffield\, horn virtuoso playing a number of different saxophones\, clarinet\, even piccolo; Kerry Mullen grooving on drums; and Matty Cooper\, the boogie bass-man. \nEVO website: www.eclecticvo.com \nMusic at the Hall programs concerts and events to keep the village of Eden Mills hopping\, and to raise funds for Community Hall operations. She now uses her special style of percussion to enhance the music of such artists as Eric Andersen\, Jonathan Edwards\, Pat Wictor\, Tracy Grammer\, Full Frontal Folk and her own Celtic Roots Music group RUNA. \nJAMES GORDON has been there. He’s done that. He has had a remarkably diverse and resilient career in the Canadian cultural sector. As a solo singer-songwriter and with the ground-breaking trio Tamarack\, he’s recorded 42 albums and toured relentlessly around the world. He’s written for symphony orchestras\, musical theatre and dance works\, scored films\, and for more than ten years was heard on CBC radio as songwriter-in-residence for the ’Basic Black’ and ‘Ontario Morning’ programs. Due to the pandemic severely limiting city-wide programs and supports for families\, as well as income streams for many caregivers\, CCS has seen numbers of first-time food pantry users increase exponentially. This was showcased as 1 in 7 residents in Guelph reported living in a food insecure household\, with 1 in 6 reported being severely food insecure (2021). This has been perpetuated by increasing costs at the grocery stores on food\, hygiene products\, and basic household necessities. But this one is going to be very special indeed. \nThe Roaring 20s was a decade of incredible energy and creativity around the world\, particularly in Paris as well as North America. Like now\, it was an amazing comeback from the great influenza pandemic of 1918 with Jazz having big influence on “Classical” music. This program concept was created by Sadie and her excitement and love for the music of the 1920s. Last year’s Roaring 20s concert was such a hit that we had to do a SEQUEL!

His career as a singer/songwriter and guitarist has taken him around the world. He is especially remembered for ‘Play Me a Rock and Roll Song’\, his bitter-sweet memory of finding himself\, a relaxed and amiable story-teller\, facing a rambunctious audience at the Aldergrove Rock Festival circa 1968. \nSince then he has sold almost half a million copies of his 13 albums\, has two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year)\, a total of seven Juno nominations and four Gold albums to his credit. DESCRIPTION:Art Not Shame is excited to host local musician\, song-writer\, and producer\, Joni NehRita in offering an 8-week community choir workshop called\, Songbird: An Unconventional Choir. \nSongbird will invite community members to participate in the art of choral singing\, regardless of past choral experience\, musical skill or ability. Over the course of 8-weeks\, participants will learn to sing in harmony with others as they explore music that engages with themes of social justice\, equity\, and change and across multiple genres (e.g. pop\, reggae\, calypso\, gospel\, and jazz). NehRita adopts a “Música do Círculo” methodology\, an approach that uses improvisation\, body percussion\, movement and play.  \nCentring inclusivity\, Songbirds is open to people of all genders and uses neutral names for different choral positions (e.g. ‘low\, mid-low\, and high’ instead of ‘bass\, tenor\, and soprano’) to support inclusion. DESCRIPTION:Megan Arnold presents a full-day multidisciplinary workshop that focuses on responding to the creative prompt APOCALYPSE. Participants will learn how to create something quickly\, without the pressures of preciousness\, perfectionism\, or imposter syndrome\, and share it with a group. \nThe first part of the workshop will involve some context around Megan’s work\, improvisation games\, and lots of chit-chat about what apocalypse means to everyone in a specifically queer context. \nThe second part of the workshop will involve creative exercises\, collaborative mega-collage\, storytelling\, getting real\, getting silly\, and putting it all together to make a scrappy ensemble performance. DESCRIPTION:The Pay it Forward Arts Fund (PIFAF) is a gift of artist Barbara Salsberg Mathews and her husband Bruce Mathews. The award helps local artists\, in any discipline\, fund art projects that “pay it forward” and benefit the community. \nThe PIFAF takes many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. It was designed to encourage artists to rise to the challenge and “pay it forward” by using their talents to help others and the Guelph community. The PIFAF runs for a total of four years. Art Not Shame will administer the fund with the goal of amplifying local community-engaged arts projects. \nWho is Eligible \nAny artist (or group of artists) age 18 or over\, working in Guelph and is a permanent citizen of Canada or persons upon whom refugee protection has been conferred\, and who are legally entitled to work in Ontario. They are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that pay it forward and benefit the community. A preference may be given to those who demonstrate a long-standing connection to the Guelph community. All artistic mediums are welcome to apply. \nWhat is Eligible \nGuelph-Wellington area artists are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that focus on improving lives and thereby enriching our community. The award could take many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. \nThese projects must be original in nature (this fund does not support events\, projects or programs that have already been established) and cannot have begun prior to the award being granted.
