Community is central to Justin Favela’s art practice and the public is invited to join the visiting artist to participate in a collaborative workshop and contribute to murals that will be part of Favela’s vibrant large-scale installation\, Entrelazados\, on view this fall in the vaulted two-storey space of the Art Gallery of Guelph. At the core of Favela’s work is an exploration of his own intersecting identities as a Guatemalan-Mexican-American artist\, adapting and repurposing traditional Mexican or Latin American craft practices\, particularly cartoneria or piñata making. Join us for an afternoon of artmaking and be part of the vivid designs that Favela is creating using everyday materials like paper and glue. All are welcome; no experience necessary. SUMMARY:Applications for the Pay it Forward Arts Fund now open through Art Not Shame
DESCRIPTION:The Pay it Forward Arts Fund (PIFAF) is a gift of artist Barbara Salsberg Mathews and her husband Bruce Mathews. The award helps local artists\, in any discipline\, fund art projects that “pay it forward” and benefit the community. \nThe PIFAF takes many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. It was designed to encourage artists to rise to the challenge and “pay it forward” by using their talents to help others and the Guelph community. The PIFAF runs for a total of four years. Art Not Shame will administer the fund with the goal of amplifying local community-engaged arts projects. \nWho is Eligible \nAny artist (or group of artists) age 18 or over\, working in Guelph and is a permanent citizen of Canada or persons upon whom refugee protection has been conferred\, and who are legally entitled to work in Ontario. They are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that pay it forward and benefit the community. A preference may be given to those who demonstrate a long-standing connection to the Guelph community. All artistic mediums are welcome to apply. \nWhat is Eligible \nGuelph-Wellington area artists are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that focus on improving lives and thereby enriching our community. The award could take many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. \nThese projects must be original in nature (this fund does not support events\, projects or programs that have already been established) and cannot have begun prior to the award being granted. The project should be able to be completed within the funding requested. \nAmount of Award \nThis grant will fund one or more projects of up to $6\,000.

SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping | Marking Time: Tour of the Old Stone Quarry Site at the Guelph Correctional Centre
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk and conversation with AGG Director Shauna McCabe and researcher and past chair of Heritage Guelph\, Brian Skerrett\, as they discuss the layered histories at play in Guelph\, with a focus on the site of the stone quarry on the grounds of the Guelph Correctional Centre (Ontario Reformatory). This dialogue will delve into the connections between geologies and geographies as well as between natural and built environments. \nWorked by those incarcerated at the Reformatory\, not only does the stone quarry expose layers of rock that reveal the earth’s stratigraphy and fossil records\, in this case a prehistoric reef\, the quarries became part of the cultural landscape as materials extracted were used to build local architecture\, influencing the aesthetic and structural characteristics of the region. \nThis tour is presented in conjunction with the AGG’s recent exhibition Yours in Native Spirit: Richard Bedwash\, curated by Shauna McCabe and Colinda Clyne\, as the Anishinaabe artist served a term there in the 1970s\, part of the intricate narrative that connects his work\, his life\, and the city of Guelph. \nRegistration is required: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/marking-time-tour-of-the-old-stone-quarry-site-at-the-ontario-reformatory-tickets-1008520059647?aff=oddtdtcreator \nNote that to access this site\, participants must walk over uneven ground for approximately 15 minutes and there are no washroom facilities on the site. The Community Outreach team will bring precut 2.5” x 6.5” scraps or you can contribute your own. We’ll have the Accuquilt cutter on hand to make quick work of the cutting. SUMMARY:Jurors Walk ~ Headwaters Arts 28th Annual Fall Festival
DESCRIPTION:Headwaters Art is excited to announce the line-up of events for the 28th Annual Fall Festival which opens with the Juried Art Show and Sale on September 18\, 2024 followed by the ticketed Opening Nite Soiree on September 19\, 2024 and our ever popular\, free event\, Jurors Walk. \nJoin 2024 Jurors\, Dr. Shauna McCabe and Mark Fletcher with a walk around the gallery to listen and learn about what impressed them when selecting the over 75+ works of art on exhibit by the 70 artists juried into the 28th Annual Headwaters Arts Juried Art Show & Sale. As an artist or art collector it is a chance to ask questions and learn more about the art world. \nDr. Shauna McCabe is the Director of the Art Gallery of Guelph\, and former Executive Director of the Textile Museum of Canada with more than 15 years experience as an arts administrator\, as well as professor and Canada Research Chair at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. \nPreviously\, she was Director of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and Senior Curator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Prince Edward Island. In 2007\, she was appointed Canada Research Chair in Critical Theory in the Interpretation of Culture\, leading interdisciplinary research and practice at Mount Allison University where she was also Associate Professor. \nMcCabe completed a PhD at the University of British Columbia\, an MA at Simon Fraser University\, and a BA at McGill University. \nMark Fletcher is co-owner of Cloud Gallery and a long-time lover and supporter of the arts. He was the Co-Chair of the Orillia Museum of Art and History for 4 years and Chair of the Orillia Heritage Committee for 8 years. At the Museum he led a push for growth and innovation that included a $2m renovation of the Heritage Building and a restructuring of the organization. His business experience includes working for large Canadian corporations (Bell\, General Motors\, Scotiabank) and innovative marketing agencies (Perennial Inc.). He is now a full-time faculty member at Georgian College in Barrie teaching courses on entrepreneurship and investing. He is married\, a father of 4\, and lives in Orillia. He has organized artist retreats\, bringing together a community of artists at his recreational property in Severn Township\, Rancho Relaxo\, where he supports artist residencies. More recently he is expanding those programs to Snug Harbour on Georgian Bay and beyond with Cloud Gallery. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Otherwise Studios and Necessary Art Collective are excited to launch Crit Nights this fall! \nAlternating between both creative spaces\, Crit Nights will bring together local painters\, sculptors\, printmakers and other local artists to engage in a critical dialogue about each other’s work. Artists are encouraged to bring an in-progress or complete artwork to share with the group. September’s crit night will take place at Otherwise Studios\, 490 York Road\, building i suite 201\, Guelph ON. \nFacilitated by local artist Paige Bromby\, these monthly group critiques provide valuable feedback on your artwork\, a friendly safe environment to share ideas and an opportunity to connect with local artists in your community! \nNever participated in a critique before? No problem! We will be there every step of the way to ensure the process is fun\, kind and inspiring. \nThis event is free to attend but we welcome donations to help support our creative spaces. \nSpace is limited\, RSVP today!

DESCRIPTION:Join the 2024 Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators recipient\, Dallas Fellini\, as they offer insight into the ideas and histories at play in the exhibition Some kind of we\, which brings together multiple generations of artists to reflect on an ongoing tradition of trans-centered artistic production in Canada over the course of three decades.
