SUMMARY:In Conversation with Susan Mogul
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging conversation with pioneering video artist Susan Mogul\, who will discuss her 1997 video I Stare at You and Dream\, featured in AGG’s exhibition Do You Remember Love\, as well as her wider practice. Known for intertwining autobiography with documentary strategies\, Mogul’s work often explores themes of family\, relationships\, and identity through a deeply personal lens. \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend. The narrative is intimate\, intertwining familial and romantic relationships to explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of women’s identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nSusan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s\, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives\, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally\, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024\, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum\, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. \nMogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020)\, where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. DESCRIPTION:Online class\, live via Zoom\nTuesday\, January 7\, 2025\n6:30 to 8:30 pm EDT\nAges 16+ \nSuitable for artists working in all media – photography\, paint\, drawing\, encaustic and others\, this course focuses on the practicalities of being an artist rather than the process of creating work. We’ll discuss pricing your artwork\, archival printing methods\, finishing and mounting options\, creating limited editions\, submitting to galleries and other ways to show your work such as art fairs\, books or online options. We’ll also touch on applying for grants\, writing an artist’s statement and creating your CV. \nTaught live via Zoom\, students have the opportunity to ask questions through out the class\, and will have access to the class recording for one month.  The course link will be sent via email two days before the class begins. \nFee: $75.00 + HST.

DESCRIPTION:Join textile artist Lauren Wright Vartanian and writer Keltie Thomas as we celebrate science-inspired art! \nCome and celebrate the release of Stitching Science\, a stunning science book from textile artist Lauren Wright Vartanian. Scientific topics ranging from Atom to Zenith come to life at the end of Lauren’s skilled needle\, and lively text by Keltie Thomas explains key concepts. \nLauren and Keltie will discuss their journey in creating this fabulous book and it wouldn’t be a true STEAM event (science\, technology\, engineering\, ART\, and mathematics) without the opportunity to unleash our inner artists with some hands-on fun! All this plus beer\, food\, laughs\, and trivia … join us! \nOur good friends from the Bookshelf will be on hand selling copies of the book and both Lauren & Keltie will be happy to sign yours for you. \nSession will begin shortly after 7 pm – seating is first-come-first-served. Additional parking is available at 490 York Road. \nTickets are by donation. SUMMARY:Teresa Duryea Wong speaks at Royal City Quilters Guild
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Meeting\n\n\nJapan 2.0\n\n\n\n\nMeet the Next Gen of Japanese quilt artists. Japan’s history and cultural norms set very clear rules for who is and who is not considered a Master\, and this lecture will explain why\, and how\, that happens. But in the Japan 2.0 universe\, there is a community of quilters for the 21st century who are operating outside the rigid cultural lines of the traditional Master/Student relationship. They are creating original\, modern quilts with a global eye while still managing to reference the Japanese aesthetic. \n\n\nTeresa’s Bio\nTeresa Duryea Wong is an author\, lecturer\, and quilt historian. She is the author of Sewing & Survival: Native American Quilts from 1880 – 2022\, and five additional books covering Japanese quilts and textiles\, American quilts and cotton\, and quilts for social justice. She is a contributing writer for Quiltfolk. Teresa is a member of the International Quilt Museum advisory board and the Quilt Alliance board. She has been recognized as a scholar by the Visions Museum of Textile Art in San Diego and the Texas Quilt Museum. Her lectures are popular with American quilt guilds\, and she is invited regularly to lecture at the annual Quiltcon and International Quilt Festival events.
