SUMMARY:In Conversation with Susan Mogul
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging conversation with pioneering video artist Susan Mogul\, who will discuss her 1997 video I Stare at You and Dream\, featured in AGG’s exhibition Do You Remember Love\, as well as her wider practice. Known for intertwining autobiography with documentary strategies\, Mogul’s work often explores themes of family\, relationships\, and identity through a deeply personal lens. \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend. The narrative is intimate\, intertwining familial and romantic relationships to explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of women’s identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nSusan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s\, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives\, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally\, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024\, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum\, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. \nMogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020)\, where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. In my adult years I got involved in digital marketing\, and in doing so I saw the kind of images people share and look for of Guelph. Do a Google image search for Guelph and you’ll find a flood of the same things: downtown\, the Basilica\, and the university.   \n   My problem is with the fact that this city is so much more than downtown or the university! I didn’t really go to the university or downtown until I was in high school. When I think of the city I think of the visuals of my childhood: playing in the creeks (see: Memories of Running)\, field trips to other schools (see: Where Is Your God Now?)\, visiting deceased family (see: Hope)\, falling asleep at the drive in (see: Mustang) and more before I even discovered the other\, popular\, visual landmarks of the city. \nI wrestled with this show in my mind in how to shoot it. Do I capture according to my memory? Should I shoot just what I see? Can I add my perspective on the history and future of the city?  Is there space for visual commentary? When I look at the collection\, I think I ended up doing all of that.   ​ \n   I want you to see Guelph\, But not just the downtown or university. This show is an invitation for you to explore the city in pictures\, to be curious about their locations\, to add your own narratives to the places\, and to go find not only the nooks that I found\, but the places that bring your own stories\, too. SUMMARY:Traditional Quillwork Medallion Workshop | Honouring My Teacher\, Friend\, Mother\, My Inspiration
DESCRIPTION:In honouring five generations of listening\, watching and learning\, Ojibway/Potawatomi artist Boshdayosgaykwe Pawis grew up in and around the gift of traditional quillwork\, living and learning to continually work toward teaching this skill. \nAs the founder of G’zaagin Art Gallery\, she resourcefully uses only natural materials and finds creative ways for people to experience natural products. Participants will learn about quillwork and use materials that have been harvested\, cleaned\, dried\, and stored by G’zaagin Art Gallery throughout the year to make their own quillwork medallion. Come learn and listen to Pawis’ stories\, filled with love and gratitude\, as we learn to listen to our Earth Mother. \nThis workshop is best suited to participants aged 16 and older. All materials are provided; registration is required. AGG is covering the cost of materials for Indigenous participants\, who can contact Nicole Neufeld directly at nneufeld@artgalleryofguelph.ca to register.

DESCRIPTION:Calling makers of all ages and stages! Join us at the Art Gallery of Guelph for an afternoon of creative activity using the simplest of materials: paper\, glue\, and scissors. Projects are inspired by the artwork currently on view by artist Justin Favela who uses everyday materials to ingeniously to “make something out of nothing\,” as he describes it\, producing his distinctive mash-ups of traditional and popular culture. Drop in between 1 – 5 pm for as long as you like to make creative curios and magnificent masterpieces to take home\, and contribute to collective community cut paper banners (papel picado) and murals that will be displayed at the gallery. Learn more about traditional and contemporary paper art practices from Latin America during Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month\, an opportunity to recognize the cultures and contributions of these communities that have indelibly enriched our collective experiences. \nThe AGG Make-a-thon is ideal for everyone\, from beginners and families to established artists. All materials are provided; no experience necessary. Participants 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult for supervision and support. Bring your curiosity and explore your creative inspiration! \nThis program is presented with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council\, an agency of the Government of Ontario.
