Janice will discuss how a transformative dream during an artist residency in Sweden inspired her book\, Bloom: On Becoming an Artist Later in Life. \nJanice will share her journey of becoming an artist and explore how creativity can flourish as we age. Her book combines personal anecdotes with the stories of 138 artists\, offering a fresh perspective on how art and aging can positively intersect. Discover how older artists can leverage their experiences and embrace creativity to renew their sense of purpose and joy. \nNo registration required; all are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Headwaters Art is excited to announce the line-up of events for the 28th Annual Fall Festival which opens with the Juried Art Show and Sale on September 18\, 2024 followed by the ticketed Opening Nite Soiree on September 19\, 2024 and our ever popular\, free event\, Jurors Walk. \nJoin 2024 Jurors\, Dr. Shauna McCabe and Mark Fletcher with a walk around the gallery to listen and learn about what impressed them when selecting the over 75+ works of art on exhibit by the 70 artists juried into the 28th Annual Headwaters Arts Juried Art Show & Sale. As an artist or art collector it is a chance to ask questions and learn more about the art world. \nDr. Shauna McCabe is the Director of the Art Gallery of Guelph\, and former Executive Director of the Textile Museum of Canada with more than 15 years experience as an arts administrator\, as well as professor and Canada Research Chair at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. \nPreviously\, she was Director of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and Senior Curator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Prince Edward Island. In 2007\, she was appointed Canada Research Chair in Critical Theory in the Interpretation of Culture\, leading interdisciplinary research and practice at Mount Allison University where she was also Associate Professor. \nMcCabe completed a PhD at the University of British Columbia\, an MA at Simon Fraser University\, and a BA at McGill University. \nMark Fletcher is co-owner of Cloud Gallery and a long-time lover and supporter of the arts. He was the Co-Chair of the Orillia Museum of Art and History for 4 years and Chair of the Orillia Heritage Committee for 8 years. At the Museum he led a push for growth and innovation that included a $2m renovation of the Heritage Building and a restructuring of the organization. His business experience includes working for large Canadian corporations (Bell\, General Motors\, Scotiabank) and innovative marketing agencies (Perennial Inc.). He is now a full-time faculty member at Georgian College in Barrie teaching courses on entrepreneurship and investing. He is married\, a father of 4\, and lives in Orillia. He has organized artist retreats\, bringing together a community of artists at his recreational property in Severn Township\, Rancho Relaxo\, where he supports artist residencies. More recently he is expanding those programs to Snug Harbour on Georgian Bay and beyond with Cloud Gallery. \n  \n

The Community Outreach team will bring precut 2.5” x 6.5” scraps or you can contribute your own. We’ll have the Accuquilt cutter on hand to make quick work of the cutting. If you don’t have a travel sewing machine\, please join us anyway. There’s always room for an extra set of hands and plenty of opportunities to mingle with someone.

SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping | Marking Time: Tour of the Old Stone Quarry Site at the Guelph Correctional Centre
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk and conversation with AGG Director Shauna McCabe and researcher and past chair of Heritage Guelph\, Brian Skerrett\, as they discuss the layered histories at play in Guelph\, with a focus on the site of the stone quarry on the grounds of the Guelph Correctional Centre (Ontario Reformatory). This dialogue will delve into the connections between geologies and geographies as well as between natural and built environments. \nWorked by those incarcerated at the Reformatory\, not only does the stone quarry expose layers of rock that reveal the earth’s stratigraphy and fossil records\, in this case a prehistoric reef\, the quarries became part of the cultural landscape as materials extracted were used to build local architecture\, influencing the aesthetic and structural characteristics of the region. \nThis tour is presented in conjunction with the AGG’s recent exhibition Yours in Native Spirit: Richard Bedwash\, curated by Shauna McCabe and Colinda Clyne\, as the Anishinaabe artist served a term there in the 1970s\, part of the intricate narrative that connects his work\, his life\, and the city of Guelph. \nRegistration is required: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/marking-time-tour-of-the-old-stone-quarry-site-at-the-ontario-reformatory-tickets-1008520059647?aff=oddtdtcreator \nNote that to access this site\, participants must walk over uneven ground for approximately 15 minutes and there are no washroom facilities on the site. DESCRIPTION:Join local artist Paige Bromby in exploring the use of botanicals in printmaking to harness nature’s love of shape and texture. \nThis is a playful printmaking workshop great for beginners\, children and artists of all skill levels. \nParticipants will be taught the basics of mono-printing with botanicals and enjoy experimenting with different plant materials to create unique and engaging artwork to take home. \nPaige Bromby is a Guelph Based Artist and Community Animator. Working primarily in painting and drawing\, she explores landscape painting in the age of digital media.Paige holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours\, in Studio Art from the University of Guelph\, with a minor in Art History.

SUMMARY:Fall 2024 Exhibitions Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, September 12 at 6:30 pm\, for the launch of the Art Gallery of Guelph’s fall season featuring two exhibitions: Do You Remember Love and Some kind of we. Both exhibitions explore themes of identity and connection through diverse artistic practices. Do You Remember Love integrates video and traditional quillwork to examine identity and relationships\, while Some kind of we uses video and print to reflect on trans relationality and solidarity. Curators Maria Hupfield\, Jason Lujan\, and Dallas Fellini will be in attendance alongside artists Cleopatria Peterson and B.G-Osborne. \nAccessible parking and a limited number of free parking spots are available in the lot beside and behind the gallery with an entrance off Gordon Street\, just north of College Avenue.
