SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping | Marking Time: Tour of the Old Stone Quarry Site at the Guelph Correctional Centre
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk and conversation with AGG Director Shauna McCabe and researcher and past chair of Heritage Guelph\, Brian Skerrett\, as they discuss the layered histories at play in Guelph\, with a focus on the site of the stone quarry on the grounds of the Guelph Correctional Centre (Ontario Reformatory). This dialogue will delve into the connections between geologies and geographies as well as between natural and built environments. \nWorked by those incarcerated at the Reformatory\, not only does the stone quarry expose layers of rock that reveal the earth’s stratigraphy and fossil records\, in this case a prehistoric reef\, the quarries became part of the cultural landscape as materials extracted were used to build local architecture\, influencing the aesthetic and structural characteristics of the region. \nThis tour is presented in conjunction with the AGG’s recent exhibition Yours in Native Spirit: Richard Bedwash\, curated by Shauna McCabe and Colinda Clyne\, as the Anishinaabe artist served a term there in the 1970s\, part of the intricate narrative that connects his work\, his life\, and the city of Guelph. \nRegistration is required: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/marking-time-tour-of-the-old-stone-quarry-site-at-the-ontario-reformatory-tickets-1008520059647?aff=oddtdtcreator \nNote that to access this site\, participants must walk over uneven ground for approximately 15 minutes and there are no washroom facilities on the site. DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, September 12 at 6:30 pm\, for the launch of the Art Gallery of Guelph’s fall season featuring two exhibitions: Do You Remember Love and Some kind of we. Both exhibitions explore themes of identity and connection through diverse artistic practices. Do You Remember Love integrates video and traditional quillwork to examine identity and relationships\, while Some kind of we uses video and print to reflect on trans relationality and solidarity. SUMMARY:Applications for the Pay it Forward Arts Fund now open through Art Not Shame
DESCRIPTION:The Pay it Forward Arts Fund (PIFAF) is a gift of artist Barbara Salsberg Mathews and her husband Bruce Mathews. The award helps local artists\, in any discipline\, fund art projects that “pay it forward” and benefit the community. \nThe PIFAF takes many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. It was designed to encourage artists to rise to the challenge and “pay it forward” by using their talents to help others and the Guelph community. The PIFAF runs for a total of four years. Art Not Shame will administer the fund with the goal of amplifying local community-engaged arts projects. \nWho is Eligible \nAny artist (or group of artists) age 18 or over\, working in Guelph and is a permanent citizen of Canada or persons upon whom refugee protection has been conferred\, and who are legally entitled to work in Ontario. They are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that pay it forward and benefit the community. A preference may be given to those who demonstrate a long-standing connection to the Guelph community. All artistic mediums are welcome to apply. \nWhat is Eligible \nGuelph-Wellington area artists are invited to submit proposals for creative projects that focus on improving lives and thereby enriching our community. The award could take many forms by using the arts to heal\, give a hand-up\, help build self-esteem\, beautify our environment\, or enrich and improve others’ lives. \nThese projects must be original in nature (this fund does not support events\, projects or programs that have already been established) and cannot have begun prior to the award being granted. The project should be able to be completed within the funding requested. \nAmount of Award \nThis grant will fund one or more projects of up to $6\,000.

Community is central to Justin Favela’s art practice and the public is invited to join the visiting artist to participate in a collaborative workshop and contribute to murals that will be part of Favela’s vibrant large-scale installation\, Entrelazados\, on view this fall in the vaulted two-storey space of the Art Gallery of Guelph. At the core of Favela’s work is an exploration of his own intersecting identities as a Guatemalan-Mexican-American artist\, adapting and repurposing traditional Mexican or Latin American craft practices\, particularly cartoneria or piñata making. Join us for an afternoon of artmaking and be part of the vivid designs that Favela is creating using everyday materials like paper and glue. All are welcome; no experience necessary. DESCRIPTION:  \nIn gratitude for receiving this year’s Kenny Doren award\, annais linares will mount era of an end\, a newly developed sound and visual installation\, in the Ed Video gallery. Earlier this year\, annais received news that her landlords were returning back to their Guelph home – meaning she would have to move. She arrived at The Ward in September 2020 from California to begin grad school and hardly knew anyone. Since then\, she’s grown to love Guelph and all its beings! This installation is a kiss goodbye to her Johnston house which held her in the darkest of isolation-times\, as well as a goodbye to The Ward\, Guelph\, and all the relationships she made throughout the last four years overall. \nExhibition Reception: Thursday August 22nd\, 7-9pm

DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed to shift you from shooting in semi-manual modes to full manual mode\, allowing you to have more control over your camera and creativity. \nBy the end of this course\, you will have the foundation needed to delve into the advanced genres of photography such as portraiture\, street photography\, family\, food\, and wedding photography. \n\n\nShooting in full manual mode \n\n\nHDR (High Dynamic Range) \n\n\nPanning\, light painting\, metering \n\n\nFlash\, histograms\, long exposures \n\n\nAdvanced composition techniques \n\n\nPre-requisites: You must be 100% comfortable in : \n\n\nShooting in both priority modes \n\n\nKnow the basic relationship between shutter speeds\, aperture and ISO settings \n\n\nExposure compensations \n\n\nWhite Balance \n\n\nMetering Types \n\n\nIf your current knowledge in photography does not include these pre-requisites\, we highly recommend you attend the Stage 1 Digital Photography Workshop first. Drawing together the visual language of cottage-country ephemera with references to practices of measuring\, mapping\, and surveying\, Nadeau’s hyperreal paintings incorporate trompe l’oeil to underscore a certain perception of the Canadian wilderness that has both depended on and accelerated the continuous dispossession of Indigenous lands for resource extraction and leisure. \nThis exhibition represents the culmination of two years of focused work in the University of Guelph’s Master of Fine Arts program. The Art Gallery of Guelph’s annual exhibitions of graduating MFA students are presented in conjunction with the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph.

SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping: Night Walk in the Moth Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join the artists for a nighttime walk to the garden under the full moon where participants will spend time observing the vibrant world active during the nighttime as well as their own sensory responses to the night. Guided by the artists\, participants will explore how to shift their sensory perception\, and consider how other beings\, like moths\, sense the world. \nParticipants will meet in the parking lot and the walk to the garden is about 15 minutes along a gravel roadway with mowed grass paths which have some uneven surfaces and slight to moderate inclines. Because the garden and walk involve encounters with other beings in their own sensory worlds\, please avoid the use of insect repellants and other scented products. Bug suits will be available\, or you are welcome to bring your own. We also recommend wearing long sleeves. \nPlease check your email in the afternoon if the weather looks ominous as we will be in touch as soon as possible if we plan to reschedule. We are tentatively holding June 23 at 9:00 pm as a rain date. Otherwise\, we will be outside for the program and so encourage you to dress for the weather with comfortable footwear for walking. DESCRIPTION:You are invited! Join us Thursday\, June 13 at 6:30 pm\, for the launch of the Art Gallery of Guelph’s summer season featuring three exhibitions: Yours in Native Spirit: Richard Bedwash\, Catherine Chan: Fractures and Fragments\, and What Remains. All three exhibitions address ideas and issues that are exceptionally timely – from the work of Richard Bedwash\, the Anishinaabe artist tied to murals that remain at risk within the aging structure of the abandoned Guelph Correctional Centre\, to Catherine Chan’s engagement with questions of the Anthropocene\, and the work in What Remains that draws attention to the humanitarian crisis playing out on the southern border of the United States. \nAccessible parking and a limited number of free parking spots are available in the lot beside and behind the gallery with an entrance off Gordon Street\, just north of College Avenue. DESCRIPTION:Join this workshop to learn the art of monoprinting without a press\, using a gel plate printing technique! Learn how to compose interesting imagery using stencils\, transfers\, and various tools to create texture. Participants will also experiment with layering prints to create more detailed compositions.
