SUMMARY:Ctrl+Shift: Algorithmic Animosity- Online Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 17 | 7—8:30pm EDT \nOnline via Zoom \nFREE (register here) \nA panel focusing on how social media platforms—notably Meta platforms—mediate diasporic knowledge sharing practices and long distance relationships. The Filipino Diaspora often communicates with loved ones local and abroad via social media or messaging platforms like Facebook\, Instagram\, WhatsApp\, and TikTok. Rooted in capitalism and colonialism\, these platforms extract and appropriate traditional stories\, teachings\, and practices to package and sanitize them for white western audiences to consume. \nArtists Megan Arnold\, Excel Garay and The Noise Witch\, and moderator Madeleine Lychek\, will discuss how platforms based in capitalism and western colonialism encourage traditional knowledge sharing for proliferation but incite algorithmic racism\, data mining\, and digital censorship. \nThe event is presented as part of InterAccess’s Ctrl+Shift series. Ctrl+Shift is a strategy session series that invites influential artists\, technologists\, scholars\, and community leaders to propose solutions to challenges that affect the creative community. Structured as a panel discussion\, Ctrl+Shift seeks to facilitate productive conversations and actionable strategies that can elicit change in our shared creative landscape. \nASL interpretation and live captions will be available for this event. \nABOUT THE PANELISTS \nMegan Arnold is a Filipinx-Canadian multidisciplinary artist who wants to make you laugh and cry and cringe. She creates affective performances that collapse the divisions between humour/pathos\, amateurism/mastery\, play/labour\, and art/entertainment. Her favourite activity is karaoke and she is currently in the Studio Art MFA program at the University of Guelph. Megan has exhibited and performed at venues and festivals across Canada and Europe. She obtained a BFA from the University of Western Ontario in 2015\, and was part of the collectively run studio and gallery space Good Sport in varying capacities from 2016-2019. \nExcel Garay is a Filipina-Canadian diasporic-settler occupying Mi’kma’kiterritory in Kjipuktuk\, Eskikewa’kik (Halifax\, Nova Scotia). Her practice makes use of desire and hesitation as reflective spaces. The two emotions act as beneficial forms of affect that allows both the artist and the viewers to have new understandings of abject experiences from prismatic contradictions\, diasporic experiences\, epistemic violence\, complacency\, and complicity. She often enhances the spectral states of herself and common everyday objects to reveal their complex histories that are tied to extraction\, unseen labor\, globalization\, and colonization. However\, she is also curious about empowering secrets and mutual desires gained by connecting with others through her art and community process. Hauntology and Queer Phenomenology under a necropolitical lens foregrounds her practice. Garay’s works materially manifests as paintings\, weavings\, immersive installations\, and interdisciplinary assemblage. \nThe Noise Witch is an award-winning artist that explores the intersection of art\, music\, technology\, and magic. They weave sound and soul to engulf your ears and enchant your heartstrings. From drag performance to digitally enhanced artwork\, they use a combination of mediums in their work to evoke curiosity\, emotion\, and playfulness from audiences. The Noise Witch has been named a Buddies in Bad Times’ Queer Emerging artist of 2021 and is currently producing an audio-visual EP to be released later this year. \nABOUT THE MODERATOR \nMadeleine Lychek is an artist working in performance and various digital mediums. She explores the use of digital platforms as a mode of creation and performance in and of themselves. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts\, in Studio Art with Distinction\, from the University of Guelph and is currently the Program Director at Ed Video Media Arts Centre.

He is Assistant Professor of Performances Studies\, Sound Studies\, Artistic Research and Decoloniality at the University of Amsterdam\, the author of Sounding Modernities: Theatre and Music in Manila and the Asia Pacific\, 1869-1946 (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2018)\, and project leader and principal investigator of the projects »Sonic Entanglements« and Decolonizing Southeast Asian Sound Archives (DeCoSEAS). meLê is resident artist at Theater Ballhaus Naunynstrasse where his creations Echoing Europe\, sonus\, and Forces of Overtones are on repertoire. meLê also curates the Decolonial Frequences Festival and hosts the Sonic Entanglements podcast. \nTeilhard Paradela\n\nTeilhard Paradela took up Philippine Cinema\, Literature\, and Culture in the University of the Philippines. He completed his BFA degree in Creative Writing and Drama at the University of British Columbia and went to the University of Amsterdam and the University of Tampere for his MA degree in International Performance Research. He is currently writing his PhD dissertation on how the media during the Marcos regime in the Philippines imagined and constituted the masses as actors and spectators in both the political and the theatrical sense.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a workshop with Debbie Thompson Wilson! “Playing the Pipes” celebrates the whimsical animals and creatures pictured playing bagpipes in the margins of medieval manuscripts. Paint a small image adapted from medieval illuminations\, using real gold leaf\, watercolour\, and ink. DESCRIPTION:1 Day\, December 12 from 10am-4pm \nInstructor is Tammy Ratcliff. \nJoin us for a day of learning and exploring monotype printmaking techniques. This one-day workshop is a great immersion into different ways one can make a one-of-a-kind or ‘painterly’ print. This class is suitable for the complete beginner or the more experienced artist looking for a new medium to try.  Either way\, a great opportunity for loosening up and artistic play.We will be working with reduction\, trace\, stencil\, ghost\, texture and painterly monotype techniques.  We will be using an etching press\, professional oil-based printmaking inks (Charbonnel) and a wide range of papers including washi. If you are interested in chine collé\, this technique will be covered in a workshop scheduled for the following day on December 13th. \nAll materials are included and no solvents are used in this workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring an apron and their sketchbook. \nMasks are optional.

DESCRIPTION:1 Day\, December 13 from 10am-4pm \nInstructor is Tammy Ratcliff. \nIf you love working with fine tissue papers or are a printmaker looking for new techniques\, this one-day workshop could be just what you are looking for. Chine collé\, meaning pasted tissue\, is a printmaking technique where traditionally\, an artist prints their plate image onto a lightweight paper while simultaneously pasting it to a heavier weight paper using a press. We will explore ways to do this as well as more experimental techniques with layering or building images using a variety of lovely handmade\, textured and coloured papers.If you already have some prints or a plate that you would like to incorporate into the workshop\, please contact the instructor to make sure it will work with our equipment.All materials are included. Participants are encouraged to bring an apron and their sketchbook.We will be using etching presses and archival materials in a solvent-free space.

DESCRIPTION:Family Day Workshop \nWe all have a place of comfort\, whether real or imagined. Join us to creatively reflect upon this theme through writing\, drawing and finally creating a miniature world! We will transform ideas into a world created in a vessel using foraged\, found\, and upcycled materials. We will make landscapes\, structures\, figures\, and creatures with materials like bark\, twigs\, seeds\, dried flowers\, and more! \nA variety of foraged and found materials will be provided as well as basic vessels for the miniature worlds\, but you are welcome to bring anything you would like to incorporate such as interesting seeds\, twigs\, bark\, rocks\, shells as well as a vessel such as a teacup\, mug\, glass jar\, etc. \nAbout Nimra Bandukwala: Nimra (she/her) is a Pakistani visual artist and maker of crafts using natural and found materials. She was born and raised in Karachi\, and has lived in Italy\, England\, and Canada over the past decade. She facilitates community-engaged workshops with folks of all ages and abilities\, and believes that artmaking is a collaborative process that everyone should have access to. She co-leads Reth aur Reghistan\, a multidisciplinary arts project exploring folklore and artmaking using foraged and found materials. DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS ART IN A JUST RECOVERY?\nArt in a Just Recovery (AIJR) is a local community arts project that explores community care in the context of our ongoing pandemic recovery in Guelph. We’ll explore these ideas together through art and story-telling. Through a series of online and in-person workshops facilitated by Art Not Shame and the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition’s newly formed Creative Collective\, participants will create individual art pieces that eventually form a large-scale digital mural. We will also invite interested participants to contribute to building community-based knowledge about care. \nWHO IS INVOLVED?\nArt in a Just Recovery is a collaborative project between Art Not Shame\, the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition\, University of Guelph researcher\, Amy Kipp\, social artist lead\, Melanie Schambach\, and several community Art Buddies. They will discuss themes relating to trauma and resilience in relation to the artist’s current exhibition I was Wearing Golden Clamshell Earrings on display at the University of Waterloo Art Gallery through March 4. \nIn addition to the discussion there will be a participatory activity inspired by the artist’s drawing installation 74 Minutes. \nRanging from video and sculpture\, to drawing and archival materials\, the artworks in the exhibition collectively express a form of “embodied testimony” based on the artist’s research and her lived experience as a sexual assault survivor. Drawing parallels between her own experience of gender-based violence with the violence routinely inflicted upon the ecology of the ocean floor\, Magnusson’s work invites empathy and contemplation of difficult\, often suppressed topics. \nPlease be advised that this exhibition includes themes of sexual violence and trauma\, which some viewers may find distressing. It may also be the case that some viewers may not notice any impact until after engaging with the exhibit. A list of available resources and supports will be available at the front desk of the gallery\, and we encourage you to consider accessing these as needed. \n  The artist acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. \nLaura Magnusson (she/her) is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in Montreal\, Quebec (Tiohtià:ke/). Magnusson’s current research-creation explores and elucidates felt experiences of trauma through installation\, sculpture\, drawing\, performance\, and video. She is a trained scuba diver who has filmed underwater in Iceland and Mexico\, using the medium water as a site for healing and reconnecting to the body. Magnusson holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from the University of Michigan (2019)\, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Humanities at Concordia University\, funded by a Doctoral Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. \nMeaghan Ross (she/her) is the Sexual Violence Response Coordinator at the Sexual Violence Prevention Response Office\, University of Waterloo; a role through which she supports those impacted by sexual violence to access resources\, and to make decisions for themselves about available options. Meaghan also provides campus-wide education on best practices for receiving disclosures\, unpacking gendered violence\, and creating a consent culture. Working on a post-secondary campus provides Meaghan with a unique opportunity to be a part of\, and motivated by\, ongoing transformative\, collective learning.

Her passion for creating is shown in her unique woodburned designs completed on a mix of locally sourced woods. The pyrography classes Heather teaches are perfect for beginners or seasoned pyrography students that are ready to bring their art to the next level. \nFrom the lines and patterns naturally in the wood to the slow immersive process of woodburning. Heather is drawn to the extensive depth and texture attainable with the medium that is almost sculptural. Heather completed her Bachelor’s of Arts at University of Toronto and Sheridan Institute in Art and Art History. She specialized in Sculpture\, Print Media and Photography. The accumulation of her interests are quite apparent in her work.
