SUMMARY:Places of Comfort: Making Miniature Worlds with Nimra Bandukwala
DESCRIPTION:Family Day Workshop \nWe all have a place of comfort\, whether real or imagined. Join us to creatively reflect upon this theme through writing\, drawing and finally creating a miniature world! We will transform ideas into a world created in a vessel using foraged\, found\, and upcycled materials. We will make landscapes\, structures\, figures\, and creatures with materials like bark\, twigs\, seeds\, dried flowers\, and more! \nA variety of foraged and found materials will be provided as well as basic vessels for the miniature worlds\, but you are welcome to bring anything you would like to incorporate such as interesting seeds\, twigs\, bark\, rocks\, shells as well as a vessel such as a teacup\, mug\, glass jar\, etc. \nAbout Nimra Bandukwala: Nimra (she/her) is a Pakistani visual artist and maker of crafts using natural and found materials. She was born and raised in Karachi\, and has lived in Italy\, England\, and Canada over the past decade. She facilitates community-engaged workshops with folks of all ages and abilities\, and believes that artmaking is a collaborative process that everyone should have access to. She co-leads Reth aur Reghistan\, a multidisciplinary arts project exploring folklore and artmaking using foraged and found materials. You can join her creative experiments on Instagram @nimrabandukwala.art and find her on nimrabandukwala.com. \nTo ensure willing participants have access to educational opportunities\, please email Ahmri at info@otherwisestudios.com if you face financial barriers and share why you are interested in joining the class. DESCRIPTION:Calling all families with young artists and the young at heart – spend Family Day afternoon exploring printmaking and collaborating on a community project! Join us at the gallery Monday\, February 20\, between 1 pm and 4 pm\, for a free guided printmaking workshop and community-engaged project. As a drop-in event\, participants – children and caregivers – will learn how to design\, carve and hand-print a single colour print using a variety of tools and techniques. All printmakers will create and take home their own printmaking block that can be used over and over again and create two printed banners – one of these will become part of a community banner quilt that will be assembled and displayed at the Art Gallery of Guelph. Come and collaborate with your friends\, family and neighbors in the Guelph community! \nThis program is designed for kids aged 4-14 with their caregiver(s)\, though all ages are welcome. SUMMARY:Art in a Just Recovery
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS ART IN A JUST RECOVERY?\nArt in a Just Recovery (AIJR) is a local community arts project that explores community care in the context of our ongoing pandemic recovery in Guelph. We’ll explore these ideas together through art and story-telling. Through a series of online and in-person workshops facilitated by Art Not Shame and the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition’s newly formed Creative Collective\, participants will create individual art pieces that eventually form a large-scale digital mural. We will also invite interested participants to contribute to building community-based knowledge about care. \nWHO IS INVOLVED?\nArt in a Just Recovery is a collaborative project between Art Not Shame\, the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition\, University of Guelph researcher\, Amy Kipp\, social artist lead\, Melanie Schambach\, and several community Art Buddies. The project will also consist of two mental health workers who will provide support throughout the project. \nWe are inviting members from the community from ages 10+ to participate. \nWHEN\nWhole Group Workshops | February 27th – April 17th | Mondays\, 6-8pm | online \nArt Buddy Workshops | March 29th – April 22nd | Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, or Saturdays \nClick here to register. \nAs a participant of Art in a Just Recovery\, you will be a part of one of eight Art Buddy Groups that are based on art mediums and locations. DESCRIPTION:Thursday March 2\, 6:00-7:30 pm \nUniversity of Waterloo Art Gallery\, East Campus Hall 1239 \nPresented by UWAG and UW Fine Arts in conjunction with the UW Sexual Violence Prevention Response Office \nPlease join us for a discussion between visiting artist Laura Magnusson and Meaghan Ross\, Sexual Violence Response Coordinator at the Sexual Violence Prevention Response Office\, University of Waterloo. They will discuss themes relating to trauma and resilience in relation to the artist’s current exhibition I was Wearing Golden Clamshell Earrings on display at the University of Waterloo Art Gallery through March 4. \nIn addition to the discussion there will be a participatory activity inspired by the artist’s drawing installation 74 Minutes. \nRanging from video and sculpture\, to drawing and archival materials\, the artworks in the exhibition collectively express a form of “embodied testimony” based on the artist’s research and her lived experience as a sexual assault survivor. Drawing parallels between her own experience of gender-based violence with the violence routinely inflicted upon the ecology of the ocean floor\, Magnusson’s work invites empathy and contemplation of difficult\, often suppressed topics. \nPlease be advised that this exhibition includes themes of sexual violence and trauma\, which some viewers may find distressing. It may also be the case that some viewers may not notice any impact until after engaging with the exhibit. A list of available resources and supports will be available at the front desk of the gallery\, and we encourage you to consider accessing these as needed. \n  The artist acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. \nLaura Magnusson (she/her) is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in Montreal\, Quebec (Tiohtià:ke/). Magnusson’s current research-creation explores and elucidates felt experiences of trauma through installation\, sculpture\, drawing\, performance\, and video. She is a trained scuba diver who has filmed underwater in Iceland and Mexico\, using the medium water as a site for healing and reconnecting to the body. Magnusson holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from the University of Michigan (2019)\, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Humanities at Concordia University\, funded by a Doctoral Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. \nMeaghan Ross (she/her) is the Sexual Violence Response Coordinator at the Sexual Violence Prevention Response Office\, University of Waterloo; a role through which she supports those impacted by sexual violence to access resources\, and to make decisions for themselves about available options. Meaghan also provides campus-wide education on best practices for receiving disclosures\, unpacking gendered violence\, and creating a consent culture. Working on a post-secondary campus provides Meaghan with a unique opportunity to be a part of\, and motivated by\, ongoing transformative\, collective learning.

If you answered yes to any of these questions\, we have just the program for you at the Art Gallery of Guelph!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeginning March 22\, we invite teens ages 13 – 19 to come hang out at the art gallery every second Wednesday from 4 – 6 pm (see calendar below for exact dates). This is an open and diverse space for gently guided creativity and gathering with friends\, where no artistic experience is required. AGG’s programming team will lead participants through specialized projects and will be available for support throughout all sessions. Teens are invited bring their own projects or experiment with the materials provided\, and most of all\, to come as you are. Participants will also have the chance to help decide and plan what art projects the group explores together\, including brainstorming a name for this new creative crew. We want to hear from you!

Join us Sunday\, March 26th at Ed Video (404 York Road) at 3:30pm for an artist talk by Carmen! \nCarmen Mattear (born 2000) is a multidisciplinary artist who collects media as data and finds patterns through method\, and are then translated and expressed as sound installation\, sculpture\, video\, and VR. Her practice is informed by cinema\, music\, television\, and family relations. For Mattear\, art is about creating organized chaos\, in which anecdotes emerge\, revealing our positive humanism. Mattear currently lives in Guelph\, ON and holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours\, with Distinction\, in Studio Art from the University of Guelph\, where she also completed a minor in Psychology. \nThis internship opportunity is presented as part of the “Digital Skills for Youth” program coordinated by the Independent Media Arts Alliance and funded by the Department of Innovation\, Science and Economic Development Canada.
