DESCRIPTION:Join the 10C community for our 7th annual Fail Night – a fun and inspiring night where we share and laugh at our missteps\, shake them off and find success in a community dialogue about failing.  \nThis year’s theme is ‘Better Luck Next Time – Grant Writing Fails and Possibilities’ where our panelists will be asked questions about their experience stumbling through the grant writing process\, sharing their insights\, and connecting further to enhance our own grant writing and collaborative grant writing skills. Working towards future and shared successes.  \nAs always\, the panel discussion will be followed by an ‘open mic’ about grant failure and new possibilities for collaborations. \n\nOur Panelists: \nScott McGovern \nScott McGovern is a curator\, artist\, video maker\, and educator. He studied video at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Since 2005 he has been the program director at Ed Video Media Arts Centre\, an artist run centre in Guelph\, Canada\, where he has facilitated over 150 exhibitions\, events\, and concerts. Since 2010\, he has been the Visual and Media Art Curator of Kazoo! Fest. He has curated exhibitions at artist run centres\, public galleries\, and art fairs in Canada\, USA\, Mexico\, England\, France\, Sweden\, Finland\, Spain\, and Greece. \n\nScarlett Raczycki \nScarlett Raczycki (she/her) is the Executive Director of Silence\, a charitable community organization\, music venue\, and art gallery in downtown Guelph. Silence supports community and individual wellbeing by holding space and advocating for adventurousness\, creativity\, innovation\, collaboration\, and difference through concerts\, workshops\, and more.  \nBefore Silence\, Scarlett earned her MA in Art History with a Graduate Diploma in Curatorial Practices in Visual Culture through York University and received her BA in Philosophy and Museum studies at the University of Guelph. Scarlett’s passion for community organizing and grassroots arts administration has led her through positions such as Front of House Manager at the Blyth Festival Theatre\, Local Affairs Commissioner at the University of Guelph Central Student Association\, Festival Director of the Huronsound Music and Arts Festival\, and Board Member at Blyth 14/19 (now the Canadian Centre for Rural Creativity). During her 3 years at Silence\, Scarlett is proud to have had her hand in securing over $150\,000 in project and operating grants while directing as much money into the hands of artists as possible. \n\nMichelle Peek \nMichelle Peek is an artist facilitator\, community-engaged educator\, and photographer. As Founder and Executive Director of Art Not Shame\, she is interested in the transformative role of art-based community-making in social justice projects and mental wellbeing. These commitments are reflected in Art Not Shame’s deep purpose to use the arts to be in community\, deepen access to creativity\, increase well-being\, and create the conditions for inner and outer change. Michelle holds a PhD in English and Cultural Studies from McMaster University where she studied and has published on love and belonging in contemporary queer\, Indigenous\, and human rights literature. \n\nScott Thomson \nScott Thomson is a trombonist and composer based in Montreal. His songs on texts by others for singer and dance artist\, Susanna Hood\, have been played in many contexts\, some involving her choreography. His work as a soloist\, with Monicker (with Arthur Bull and Roger Turner)\, and his recent disc Pal o’Alto (duos with Yves Charuest\, Jean Derome\, Karen Ng\, and John Oswald) show Scott’s ongoing commitment to open improvisation. He co-founded and co-directed the Association of Improvising Musicians Toronto 2004-09\, and co-directed the AIMToronto Orchestra\, formed for a project with Anthony Braxton in 2007. In 2016\, he convened the Montreal-Toronto Art Orchestra to work with Roscoe Mitchell. Scott founded Somewhere There\, a Toronto venue that hosted 850 concerts during his tenure\, 2007-10. He has made site-specific works for mobile musicians and audiences in unconventional contexts including\, notably\, the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Scott programs the Guelph Jazz Festival with Karen Ng. \n\nVanessa Hyland \nVanessa Hyland is a 2008 graduate of the University of Guelph’s School of Environmental Design and Rural Development with a M.Sc. in Capacity Development and Extension – a program focused on communication for social and environmental change. Since 2009 she’s volunteered with several local grassroots organizations and experienced first-hand the fundraising challenges. She’s currently employed to fundraise for Ignatius Jesuit Centre.

SUMMARY:Personal Protective Visuals (PPV) - Amber Ozols Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Amber Ozols Exhibition at 10C Shared Space (42 Carden St.)\nNovember 22nd-December 10th \n\nDrop in the gallery Monday\, Tuesday and Thursday 9am-1pm or email executivedirector@guelpharts.ca to book a viewing appointment.\n\nOpening Reception: Thursday November 25th from 7:00pm-9:00pm. \n\n\n\n\nMy project’s objective is to develop a series of visual pieces that are entirely based in positive psychology and neuroscience research findings\, that can improve mood and quality of life. Based on empirical\, scholarly data\, I have created oil paintings and illustrations that can visually improve human brain chemistry. I have been awarded grants from the Canadian Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Society to pursue this project and I’ve been devouring scientific texts about mental resiliency since September.\n\nThis series of pieces act as Personal Protective Visuals (PPV) to keep us visually and mentally safe\, not unlike the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that has been keeping us alive these last 18 months. This project will eventually be moving to murals in public spaces\, once locations have been secured. DESCRIPTION:Art Quilt exhibition and sale at 10C Shared Art space in the ground floor reception area at 42 Carden St. in Guelph\, opposite City Hall.  Opening reception 2-4 p.m. Sunday Dec. 12th\, 2021. \nJoan’s work as a quilt-artist began with traditional quilts\, then landscapes\, seascapes and cityscapes\, all created in fabric.  She often bases her art pieces on photographs she has taken and has begun doing more abstract work in recent years.  In 2021\, she was challenged to create a piece of art based on microscopic images and is finding inspiration in both photographs of the natural world and in the fabrics she hand-dyes herself. \nGallery open 10-5 Monday- Friday. SUMMARY:Two Rivers Arts-Based Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:A free\, two-part workshop series to connect with Two Rivers community members and beyond to collaboratively imagine\, design and build instruments to be hosted at the Huron Community Garden. No musical\, artistic\, or building experience is necessary. We ask for your willingness to connect\, share\, listen and grow together\, and a commitment to attend as many sessions as possible. \nRegister Here! \nPart 1 – We’ll host community circles to share stories\, visions of the neighbourhood\, previous community experiences\, hopes and dreams for our community\, and thoughts around music\, instruments\, and building. We’ll also play some activities together. \nPart 2 – Based on the conversations we’ve had as a community\, we’ll create designs together and find ways to build the instruments from those designs. This project has some budget to bring in supportive community artists who can support our building process\, as well as budget for building materials. \nCulminating Event – At this event\, participants will be invited to share about the process\, designs\, & instruments themselves. This will mark the completion of the series. \nWhen\nEvery Saturday between February 12th and March 26th\, 1pm–2pm. The culminating event will be hosted on Saturday\, April 2nd. 8 Saturdays total. \n*A commitment to attend as many as possible is encouraged because connecting with community over time gives us a chance to develop deeper relationships. Of course\, if there’s a reason you can’t attend one weekend\, you are still invited to join us at the future sessions. \nWhere \n\n\n\nHuron Community Garden. 120 Huron Street\, located on the lot at the corner of Huron Street and Manitoba Street. This is where we’ll meet every Saturday\, and where the final event will be hosted. The instruments we create will also be hosted here after our series. Please wear warm clothing. \n*If the temperature reaches -20 degrees\, we will meet on Zoom. An email with the link will go out at least one hour prior to our gathering if there is inclement weather expected\, or if we need to meet online for any other reason. \nWhy\nTo connect with our community members. We’re doing it to play and improvise with each other and our circumstances\, and to enjoy our time together outdoors! \nWho \n\n\n\nannais linares\, a current PhD student at the University of Guelph\, is supported by the Musagetes Foundation in Guelph and the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation. She has been developing this series in collaboration and partnership with the Two Rivers Neighbourhood Group. In order to reflect on our time together and learn about how arts-based workshops can benefit our community\, the workshop sessions will be documented. Participants will be provided a consent form at the first session where we will discuss this aspect in more detail. More notes on this can be found below.

SUMMARY:March Break Arts Explosion Camp - Guelph Dance
DESCRIPTION:A variety of Arts activities such as Dance\, Music\, Visual Art\, Theatre\, Mindfulness\, Yoga and Story Creation taught by exceptional teaching artists\, for campers currently in JK-Gr. 5 \nProgramming will be offered to campers JK-Grade 5. Due to capacity limits\, limited spots will be available. \nAll Covid -19 health protocols mandated by public health at the time of camp will be strictly followed. Currently it will include daily screening when dropping off campers\, mask- wearing\, social distancing\, regular hand washing and sanitization of equipment and surfaces. Proof of vaccination is required for volunteers (ages 12 and up)\, staff and instructors. There will only be two groups of campers who will stay co-horted for the duration and these groups will have a maximum of 15 campers each. \nREGISTRATION NOW OPEN – Click Here!\nCost: \n$255/week (sibling discount 5%) \nHours: \n9:30-3:30 (scheduled arts activities) \nPre-camp care: \n8:30-9:30 (free and optional) \nPost-camp care: \n3:30-4:30 (free and optional) \nAdditional post-camp care: TBD Based on need \nFriday Open house: \nDue to the variety of regulations in place because of COVID -19 there will be no open house for this Arts Explosion Camp \nTypical Schedule: \nA typical day starts with campers arriving between 8:30-9:30 am\, during which time\, there is supervised play. The scheduled arts activities begin at 9:30\, typically two activities before lunch and two activities after lunch. Lunch is supervised and camper will remain in their co-horts and followed by supervised outdoor play. Because we go outside\, please ensure your child has adequate clothing for a variety of weather situations. Call up your bestie\, ask your honey out on a date\, or bring your mom\, brother\, sister\, you name it\, to this workshop for a fun evening where you will work separately and together to learn the tips and tricks of life drawing. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn the basics of drawing techniques and gain confidence using a variety of tools\, to render a live (clothed) model in a series of dynamic poses. Come enjoy a beer or two as we get the creative juices flowing with fun warm-up exercises\, and build up from the basics of drawing together to do some short\, and some longer drawing studies! Suggested parking lots are P23 and P19. \nWe are delighted to announce that the 2022 Dasha Shenkman Lecture is scheduled for Wednesday\, March 23rd\, 2022 and features artist\, writer\, film maker\, Chris Kraus! \nPlease mark your calendars and plan to come to Guelph to listen to the remarkable art critic\, writer\, and film maker\, Chris Krausolitics of representation. Kraus has been described as “one of our smartest and original writers on contemporary art and culture” by Holland Cotter of the New York Times\, and her work as “an uncannily coherent landscape\, a kind of hyperintellectual\, hypersexual\, digital-era Yoknapatawpha that moves back and forth across the Atlantic\, across the Mexican border\, across the Soviet bloc” by Leslie Jamison in the New Yorker. In 2008\, she received the Frank Jewett Mather Award for art journalism from the College Art Association\, the jury of which stated: “Regardless of genre or medium\, Kraus’s works exemplify honesty\, wit\, and plot. She transforms art writing’s possibilities by rescuing theories of privilege\, gossip\, and feminism from their occasional tumbles into the lackluster. Never one to hold her tongue\, Kraus helps other women speak with equal force.”\n\nMFA students in our Studio Art program will host Open Studios\, giving the community a chance to tour studios and become acquainted with this dynamic\, unique program and its award-winning students. DESCRIPTION:Shaped and inspired by McCrae’s creative expressions\, Witnessing War features drawing\, paintings and sculptures by local and national artists\, spanning 100 years of art as a salve to war. \nThe exhibition includes art works made in response to the six global conflicts in which Canada has fought: \nSouth African War (1899 – 1902) \nFirst World War(1914 – 1918) \nSecond World War (1939 – 1945) \nKorean War (1950-1953) \nPersian Gulf War (1990 -1991) \nAfghanistan War (2001 – 2014). \nWitnessing War also considers responsive works by artists with connections to Guelph and the surrounding region\, who explore themes of human conflict in their art.\nVisit The Guelph Civic Arts Museum now until December 4th to view this exhibit.

SUMMARY:A Forest Walk with Don Russell and Lisa Hirmer
DESCRIPTION:If we know how to look\, what traces of other worlds are carried in the land? What do those traces have to say? What can they teach us about the deep histories of this place and how to exist responsibly alongside them? Join us for a walk\, where artists Don Russell and Lisa Hirmer will share some of the stories they’ve encountered in a local forest. \nDon Russell is a multidisciplinary artist of Acadian and Mi’kmaq heritage and currently resides in Cambridge\, Ontario. Russell’s artistic practice encompasses encaustic painting\, printmaking and land art where he utilizes key elements of stone and earth to create monumental installations. \nLisa Hirmer is an interdisciplinary artist working in visual media\, especially photography; social practice/community collaboration; performance; and occasionally writing. Her work is focused on collective relationships\, both within human communities and in human relationships with the more-than-human world. SUMMARY:Culture Days: Leave No Trace - Tait Wilman
DESCRIPTION:Nature and a sense of place are catalysts for Tait Wilman’s work\, her artistic practice explores discursive trajectories between sense of self and place\, through installation\, sculpture\, and performance. ‘Leave No Trace’ is a sculpture located at Royal Recreation trail near Guelph Lake. This sculpture will illustrate some of the local ecology you can find on this trail\, here you will also find a small take away. This zine or take away will not only guide you through on your trail excursion but will provide tidbits about the local ecosystem\, and a creative activity. This activation brings a new perspective to the local nature\, diversity and creativity in the area. The artist aims to encourage exploring local nature to learn and create. \nThe artist wants to acknowledge that we live\, learn\, work\, play\, explore and this sculpture rests on the land within the Between the Lakes Purchase (Treaty 3)\, the treaty lands and territory of the Mississauga’s of the Credit. She recognizes that the Anishinnabe\, and Hodinöhsö:ni’ peoples have long-standing and ongoing relationship with the land and each other. SUMMARY:Culture Days: Reshaping Ruins presented by Guelph’s Artists in Residence
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Goldie Mill Ruins brought to life through light\, art\, and sound! Reshaping Ruins is an interactive art project that nurtures the community’s connection between the historic past and vibrant present of Goldie Mill Ruins. The project will reanimate Goldie Mill by bringing community-made visual art\, poetry\, and music into the space. \nThe project began with a call for poetry\, with the winning submission by Jeremy Luke-Hill being used as the text for a choral composition\, based on the creative prompt “How does it feel to experience an old space in a new light?” Local singers of all experience levels were invited to an interactive workshop where they learned\, performed\, and recorded the choir piece. The choral recordings were then manipulated into a more abstract\, ambient track to be played during the exhibition to inspire the visual art component. \nThe culminating exhibition will feature collaborative painting projections\, light\, and sound. The projection will consist of abstract and gestural painting\, paired with video footage of life in Guelph. The collaborative painting will mix with the music\, and animate the sounds flowing through the space\, while the videos will highlight the movements of people and nature in Guelph bringing the motion of life into the ruins. The works will be projected in real-time as the audience interacts with the space\, casting shadows onto the old building and bringing it to life with movement. \nThis project is created by Guelph’s 2022 Artists in Residence – Sophia Chilton\, Caleb Bray\, and Silas Chinsen.

DESCRIPTION:Hidden Perspectives is a solo exhibition stemming from the artist’s ongoing interests in the earth’s geomorphology. The exhibit invites the viewer to take a deeper dive into numerous landform processes which shape the world as we see it today. This body of work aims to provide the viewer with a new way of perceiving the world by sharing some geomorphic processes and landscapes through the lens of printmaking and photography.
