DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, August 8th\, 9am-3pm\nAges 12-16 \nInstructor: Isabelle Sain  \nGive new life to your clothes and textiles! Learn the history of indigo and marbling techniques and the role of upcycling to rethink textile waste. \nIn this workshop participants will be introduced to indigo dyeing techniques that will be applied to various fabrics and papers. Participants will have the opportunity to try multiple resist techniques to customize both supplied materials and their own items. \nMarbling will follow with vibrant inks to create painterly designs. Participants will use a range of tools to manipulate the inks and create beautiful patterns that will be transferred onto fabrics and paper. \nMaterials: Although materials are included\, we encourage you to bring some of your own items to personalize such as T-shirts\, pillowcases\, socks\, scarves\, etc. They must be made from natural fibers such as cotton\, linen\, hemp\, and silk.

We will then delve into the oldest printing technique in the world\, where students will have the freedom to design and carve their own stamp block which they can use to decorate their newly-sewn books. Light refreshments will be served.\n\nAbout the Show:\nIt is no surprise that the human experience is too often cruel. Just when your footing is found and you begin to take root\, an unexpected shift sends you flailing and face down in the bristly undergrowth.  Dreams are a welcome escape. The boundless and vibrant scenes of the mind’s eye are reminders of the importance of make-believe. In dreamscapes\, I make tangible the glimmering illustrations of my own inner fantasies. These works are formulated without physical reference matter. Instead\, I tap into my brain’s archive of idealistic environments\, with movements of the paintbrush gently urging me far into their otherworldly delights. Fine details and animated lines further reflect the swirling possibilities of a daydream – a place free of the strain of waking life.

DESCRIPTION:Mondays 6:30pm-9:00pm \nMonday September 11th \nNo instructor for this. \nThere is no better way to improve your drawing skills than working from a live nude model. In these cooperative and self-directed sessions\, the model will pose for different lengths of time\, starting with short warm-up gestures and building toward a sustained 1-hour pose for a more developed exercise. Note: there is no instructor for this class\, so attendees work at their own pace\, in the style\, size and medium of their choice.  Easels and drawing boards are provided\, and any ‘dry’ medium (graphite\, charcoal\, pastel etc) is welcome. \nWinter Footwear: Please no wet shoes/boots in the GSA. It is not restricted to a place or time. \nJoin artist Mary Kroetsch at Riverside Park’s big picnic shelter and engage in small talk by completing the sentence “Creativity is…” with a single word scribed in any fashion. Then using supplied tools\, make the word scream loudly with any kind of mark making. Consider beautiful words made ugly and ugly words made beautiful. \nThe aim of this activity is to offer a safe place and space for participants\, plus a little time\, to share something that a simple three word sentence can say\, empowering community to redefine a public space as a creative-led conversation forum. \nConversation not only conveys and sparks ideas but also enthusiasm and passion. Everyone’s experiences\, expertise\, and opinions are unique. Sharing them with others can foster a creative environment. And a creative environment is open and welcoming to many people coming together for a brief moment of understanding\, tolerance and unity. \nThe “Creativity Is” sentences will provide inspiration for a future installation at Guelph Civic Museum.

SUMMARY:Animal Forms- Residency Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Come home to the forest\, gather ’round the fire\, and share in celebrating the completion of Animal Forms\, an interactive love-letter to the land by Guelph Artist in Residence\, Miki Tamblyn. \nAnimal Forms is an interactive mask making and wearing project about shapeshifting\, playing\, and empathy between species. How might our experience of the world change if we practised seeing through another’s eyes? \nThroughout the summer the people of Guelph have participated in this project through facilitated ‘sit-spot’ sessions\, interacting with hand-made animal masks and documenting their reflections through journaling and photography. Now that these sessions are complete and the masks have been brought to life\, join Miki for one last gathering to say thank you to the forest and to our animal kin. \nThis final gathering will include an artist talk from Miki about the process of mask-making\, gratitude sharing around a fire\, and an opportunity for all to express and ponder their connection to land and our other-than-human relations.
