Suggested parking lots are P23 and P19. \nWe are delighted to announce that the 2022 Dasha Shenkman Lecture is scheduled for Wednesday\, March 23rd\, 2022 and features artist\, writer\, film maker\, Chris Kraus! \nPlease mark your calendars and plan to come to Guelph to listen to the remarkable art critic\, writer\, and film maker\, Chris Krausolitics of representation. Kraus has been described as “one of our smartest and original writers on contemporary art and culture” by Holland Cotter of the New York Times\, and her work as “an uncannily coherent landscape\, a kind of hyperintellectual\, hypersexual\, digital-era Yoknapatawpha that moves back and forth across the Atlantic\, across the Mexican border\, across the Soviet bloc” by Leslie Jamison in the New Yorker. In 2008\, she received the Frank Jewett Mather Award for art journalism from the College Art Association\, the jury of which stated: “Regardless of genre or medium\, Kraus’s works exemplify honesty\, wit\, and plot. She transforms art writing’s possibilities by rescuing theories of privilege\, gossip\, and feminism from their occasional tumbles into the lackluster. Never one to hold her tongue\, Kraus helps other women speak with equal force.”\n\nMFA students in our Studio Art program will host Open Studios\, giving the community a chance to tour studios and become acquainted with this dynamic\, unique program and its award-winning students. DESCRIPTION:Shaped and inspired by McCrae’s creative expressions\, Witnessing War features drawing\, paintings and sculptures by local and national artists\, spanning 100 years of art as a salve to war. \nThe exhibition includes art works made in response to the six global conflicts in which Canada has fought: \nSouth African War (1899 – 1902) \nFirst World War(1914 – 1918) \nSecond World War (1939 – 1945) \nKorean War (1950-1953) \nPersian Gulf War (1990 -1991) \nAfghanistan War (2001 – 2014). \nWitnessing War also considers responsive works by artists with connections to Guelph and the surrounding region\, who explore themes of human conflict in their art.\nVisit The Guelph Civic Arts Museum now until December 4th to view this exhibit.

DESCRIPTION:“Everything Connected” is a thought-provoking exhibition featuring artists from the Octarine Women Artists’ Collective.  The group explores different aspects of climate change: carbon storage\, forest fires\, ocean health and sea level rise\, endangered animals\, food security and farming practices.  Through their art\, they aim to shed some light on the impact of climate change while respecting the beauty that we all hope to preserve on our planet. \nParticipating artists are Judy French (oil)\, Carol Hughes (watercolour)\, Kim Johnston (water media and oils)\, Dianne Kennedy Cruttenden (weaving)\, Jean Loney (in memory\, glass mosaic)\, Gail Root (oils and chalk pastel)\, M. SUMMARY:A Forest Walk with Don Russell and Lisa Hirmer
DESCRIPTION:If we know how to look\, what traces of other worlds are carried in the land? What do those traces have to say? What can they teach us about the deep histories of this place and how to exist responsibly alongside them? Join us for a walk\, where artists Don Russell and Lisa Hirmer will share some of the stories they’ve encountered in a local forest. \nDon Russell is a multidisciplinary artist of Acadian and Mi’kmaq heritage and currently resides in Cambridge\, Ontario. Russell’s artistic practice encompasses encaustic painting\, printmaking and land art where he utilizes key elements of stone and earth to create monumental installations. \nLisa Hirmer is an interdisciplinary artist working in visual media\, especially photography; social practice/community collaboration; performance; and occasionally writing. Her work is focused on collective relationships\, both within human communities and in human relationships with the more-than-human world. For 2022 The Guelph Lecture—On Being is back with a live event at the River Run Centre that will blend live music\, spoken word\, and urgent dialogue. Happening May 6th in Guelph\, Ontario\, this year’s presentation will feature a keynote conversation between bestselling author and climate activist Naomi Klein* and Indigenous leader Chief Ninawá Huni Kui of the Amazon forest\, who will discuss the future of the Amazon and the implications it has for the rest of the world. JUNO Award winning duo Digging Roots will perform songs from their recent albums\, and to kick off the evening we will hear a spoken word performance from Ontario’s poet laureate Randell Adjei. \nTickets are available now through the River Run Centre’s box office. DESCRIPTION:Art on the Street is co-presented with Downtown Guelph Business Association and features contemporary fine art and craft. The juried event has grown since 2003 to become Guelph’s largest outdoor exhibition and sale. \nArt on the Street spotlights talent within the regional arts community and offers a fresh-air art experience for Guelph’s residents and visitors. SUMMARY:Culture Days: Leave No Trace - Tait Wilman
DESCRIPTION:Nature and a sense of place are catalysts for Tait Wilman’s work\, her artistic practice explores discursive trajectories between sense of self and place\, through installation\, sculpture\, and performance. ‘Leave No Trace’ is a sculpture located at Royal Recreation trail near Guelph Lake. This sculpture will illustrate some of the local ecology you can find on this trail\, here you will also find a small take away. This zine or take away will not only guide you through on your trail excursion but will provide tidbits about the local ecosystem\, and a creative activity. This activation brings a new perspective to the local nature\, diversity and creativity in the area. The artist aims to encourage exploring local nature to learn and create. \nThe artist wants to acknowledge that we live\, learn\, work\, play\, explore and this sculpture rests on the land within the Between the Lakes Purchase (Treaty 3)\, the treaty lands and territory of the Mississauga’s of the Credit. She recognizes that the Anishinnabe\, and Hodinöhsö:ni’ peoples have long-standing and ongoing relationship with the land and each other. SUMMARY:Culture Days: Reshaping Ruins presented by Guelph’s Artists in Residence
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Goldie Mill Ruins brought to life through light\, art\, and sound! Reshaping Ruins is an interactive art project that nurtures the community’s connection between the historic past and vibrant present of Goldie Mill Ruins. The project will reanimate Goldie Mill by bringing community-made visual art\, poetry\, and music into the space. \nThe project began with a call for poetry\, with the winning submission by Jeremy Luke-Hill being used as the text for a choral composition\, based on the creative prompt “How does it feel to experience an old space in a new light?” Local singers of all experience levels were invited to an interactive workshop where they learned\, performed\, and recorded the choir piece. The choral recordings were then manipulated into a more abstract\, ambient track to be played during the exhibition to inspire the visual art component. \nThe culminating exhibition will feature collaborative painting projections\, light\, and sound. The projection will consist of abstract and gestural painting\, paired with video footage of life in Guelph. The collaborative painting will mix with the music\, and animate the sounds flowing through the space\, while the videos will highlight the movements of people and nature in Guelph bringing the motion of life into the ruins. The works will be projected in real-time as the audience interacts with the space\, casting shadows onto the old building and bringing it to life with movement. \nThis project is created by Guelph’s 2022 Artists in Residence – Sophia Chilton\, Caleb Bray\, and Silas Chinsen.

DESCRIPTION:Get a thorough introduction to the rich medium of encaustic. \nThis workshop is suitable for people with no experience and for those that want to get back into encaustic painting after being away for a bit. \nEncaustic painting is the process of using melted and pigmented beeswax mixed with damar resin to create exciting\, luminous paintings. \nThis 3.5 hr class (half hour break for lunch) will take you through \n• mixing your own encaustic medium \n• how to add pigment \n• working safely with your materials \n• using tools such as griddles\, heat guns\, propane torches \n• adding other media like paper and creating texture \n• playing on practice boards; you will get to take these home with you \nAll equipment\, encaustic medium\, papers\, wood panel boards will be provided. \nJust bring yourself and your lunch! \nSmall class size ensures you get some one on one time. You are invited to this special one-hour program with artist Eileen MacArthur\, focusing on artmaking as both an individual and collective pursuit. Inspired by MacArthur’s art practice\, participants will explore methods of representation\, subjects\, and materials to create floral images that will then be combined into a larger image of a garden. Participants will be encouraged to consider how the images complement and contradict one another\, and how each image contributes to the overall composition. This workshop is suited to beginners and experienced artists alike. All materials will be provided\, and everyone is welcome. Presented by the AGG Volunteer Association\, this workshop is free. Registration is required; sign up today at the link in our bio! \nEileen MacArthur completed an MFA in painting at the University of Guelph in 2005 and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2003. Her work was included in the 2009 Biennial at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery\, and in 2010 at the XX/5 Invitational Biennial at Fisch Haus in Wichita\, Kansas. Since 2012\, she has exhibited frequently at the Manifest Gallery and Creative Research Center in Cincinnati and her work was included in International Painting Annual 4 (INPA 4) and International Painting Annual 6 (INPA 6).
