DESCRIPTION:November 6th 6:30-9:00  \nArt Gallery of Guelph\, 358 Gordon St\, Guelph\, ON N1G 1Y1 \nFree \nClick here to RSVP for this free event! \nGuelph Arts Council is pleased to collaborate with the University of Guelph’s School of Fine Art and Music and the Art Gallery of Guelph in presenting Opportunity Knocks: Re-imagining your Arts Career. How can arts students and emerging artists reimagine the careers they could pursue? What are the emergent\, entrepreneurial\, or unexpected career paths that arts grads have taken? A group of diverse arts trail blazers will share stories and lessons learned. Students\, artists and creatives of all disciplines\, ages and experience levels are welcome.  The Panel Discussion will run from 6:30pm-8:00pm followed by time to connect and enjoy refreshments. \n​ \nMeet the panelists: \nPaige Bromby is a painter and cultural administrator based in Fergus\, Ontario\, She holds a Bachelors of Arts in Studio Art from the University of Guelph (2020). \nWorking primarily in painting\, Paige explores her relationship to natural spaces in a digital age. She is interested in how familial spaces appear through her own interactions within them\, through a digital archive and as recorded and memorialized in paint. The many lives of a landscape – how those lives and interactions change through the seasons of nature and life.  \n​ \nShe maintains her painting practice while continuing her work in community arts\, facilitating a local critique night\, working for various arts/culture organizations and co-founding an artist mentorship program for artists with developmental disabilities. \n​ \nPatrick Cruz is an artist\, educator\, and albularyo who considers the role of spirituality\, improvisation\, intuition\, and play as emancipatory tools to reify embedded colonial frameworks and ideologies in art making. Cruz employs meditation\, divination\, and hypnosis as research methodologies to exhume and retrieve hidden knowledge. His works are informed by the intersections of clown philosophy\, magic\, and the occult\, and its syncretic manifestations and relationship in contemporary life. Most recently\, Cruz has been making works using material retrieved from past-life regressions to navigate and side-step cultural and ancestral identity. \nIn 2021\, he received the prestigious Thirteen Artist Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines and won the national title for the 17th RBC Canadian Painting Competition in 2015. He is an Assistant Professor in Studio Art at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus and the Daniels Faculty. He is the founder and co-director of the Kamias Triennial\, co-curator of Ben Flores Fan Club Collective with Christian Vistan\, collaborator at Boring Earth with Laila Fox\, and one of the 19 members of the artist-run collective the Plumb. \n​ \n​Daphne Zoe Dahlia / DAPH (She/Her) has been performing\, composing\, recording\, producing\, and mentoring artists for 20+ years. In 2017\, she founded Copper Sound\, a boutique recording studio in Guelph\, ON\, Canada. It serves as home base for her collaborations with artists locally and around the world. Daph’s work also includes musical directing for improv comedy\, audio mixing for commercials\, composing for film\, voice over work\, album art\, photography\, and website design. Daphne has been making new queer centred electronic music under the artist name DAPH. Her new direction combines deep vocals on top of hardware synths and samplers\, bringing together elements of synth pop\, house\, hip hop\, and darkwave.

Exploring the life and legacy of Guelph-born artist and pioneering figure in North American modernism Rolph Scarlett\, Nasby will trace Scarlett’s remarkable seventy-five-year career—from his early days in Ontario to his influential work in New York as an avant-garde abstract painter\, set designer\, industrial designer\, and creator of sculptural jewellery. \nKnown for his bold geometric abstraction in the 1930s and 1940s\, Scarlett was championed by Museum of Non-Objective Painting Director Hilla Rebay as her “greatest find\,” with over sixty of his works held in the museum’s collection. Many of these have a surprisingly modern aesthetic! Throughout the conversation\, we’ll put these quilts in context: historically\, socially\, artistically. We’ll explore some of our connections with the past that inform us\, inspire us\, and drive us in the art and practice of quilt making today. \nTara’s Bio\nTara Miller is an independent researcher\, designer\, enthusiast\, lecturer\, and instructor who recently left a 22-year career in the software industry to pursue All Things Quilts full time. Tara serves on the Board of Directors of the American Quilt Study Group (AQSG)\, is a member of the Modern Quilt Guild\, and founded the Atlanta Quilt Study Group in 2019. \nHer patterns and articles have been published in Quiltmania\, Simply Moderne\, Simply Vintage\, and Modern by the Yard. Her work has hung in both the Benartex and the Hobbs booths at the 2018 Houston Quilt Market\, in the 2019 Georgia Celebrates Quilts show\, and in the 2019 Smoky Mountain Quilt show. \nTara teaches quilting techniques through her pattern workshops\, delivers lectures and trunk shows about quilting and women’s history\, and sells her original quilt patterns and quilt-themed shirts on her website. SUMMARY:GSA Beginner Drawing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 1th and 8th\, 11-2pm \nInstructor is David Caesar \nWe are now offering 2-week workshop version of our 5-week class! \nGreat for both beginner and intermediate students\, this technically thorough workshop will cover the basics of drawing from both life and photographs. From copying simple angles and shapes\, to understanding perspective\, the fundamentals of light and shadow\, this practical course will sharpen your skills in every area. We’ll also discuss composition and design and how these can convey different feelings and ideas. Dig in to the exciting process of drawing! \nMaterials:  A sketchbook\, size 11” x 14” minimum is recommended. Try to find something with smooth paper.  A 0.5 technical pencil is preferred\, but any old pencil will do. H and 2H leads are better. A Factis eraser pen\, a kneadable eraser\, and a 6″ or 12″ ruler. \nPlease note: Masks are optional for this class. \nClick here for more info.

SUMMARY:GSA Expressive Colour for Portraits Using Pastels
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 26th 11am-5pm \nInstructor is Andra Ragusila \nThroughout the day\, attendees will learn how to convey emotions in portrait art through the effective use of color. The workshop commences with a brief presentation explaining the principles of color theory in portraiture\, and delving into the expressive potential of colors. The instructor will exemplify key techniques with a live demonstration\, and will then lead the participants through a series of exercises focused on studying various aspects of color. \nDuring the workshop\, students will gain proficiency in layering pastels\, employing an underpainting base followed by applications of both soft and hard pastels. To maximize the time dedicated to plating with color\, students will be provided with pre-prepared portrait drawings for tracing. \nMaterials: \nThere will be some hard and soft pastels available for you to choose from during the session from our class materials. \nYou are welcome to bring any additional pastels you already have or purchase your own set of hard pastels (colour conte) and soft pastels (chalk pastels). \nYou will need to bring 1 sheet white or cream sanded pastel paper cut in half (Approx. 20×26\, cut in half) \nClick here for more info.
