DESCRIPTION:Virtual Meeting\n\n\nGraphic Quilts of the 20th Century\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis presentation is packed with graphic\, visually stunning quilts from the whole of the 20th century. Many of these have a surprisingly modern aesthetic! Throughout the conversation\, we’ll put these quilts in context: historically\, socially\, artistically. We’ll explore some of our connections with the past that inform us\, inspire us\, and drive us in the art and practice of quilt making today. \nTara’s Bio\nTara Miller is an independent researcher\, designer\, enthusiast\, lecturer\, and instructor who recently left a 22-year career in the software industry to pursue All Things Quilts full time. Tara serves on the Board of Directors of the American Quilt Study Group (AQSG)\, is a member of the Modern Quilt Guild\, and founded the Atlanta Quilt Study Group in 2019. \nHer patterns and articles have been published in Quiltmania\, Simply Moderne\, Simply Vintage\, and Modern by the Yard. Her work has hung in both the Benartex and the Hobbs booths at the 2018 Houston Quilt Market\, in the 2019 Georgia Celebrates Quilts show\, and in the 2019 Smoky Mountain Quilt show. \nTara teaches quilting techniques through her pattern workshops\, delivers lectures and trunk shows about quilting and women’s history\, and sells her original quilt patterns and quilt-themed shirts on her website. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 1th and 8th\, 11-2pm \nInstructor is David Caesar \nWe are now offering 2-week workshop version of our 5-week class! \nGreat for both beginner and intermediate students\, this technically thorough workshop will cover the basics of drawing from both life and photographs. From copying simple angles and shapes\, to understanding perspective\, the fundamentals of light and shadow\, this practical course will sharpen your skills in every area. We’ll also discuss composition and design and how these can convey different feelings and ideas. Dig in to the exciting process of drawing! \nMaterials:  A sketchbook\, size 11” x 14” minimum is recommended. Try to find something with smooth paper.  A 0.5 technical pencil is preferred\, but any old pencil will do. H and 2H leads are better. SUMMARY:GSA Expressive Colour for Portraits Using Pastels
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 26th 11am-5pm \nInstructor is Andra Ragusila \nThroughout the day\, attendees will learn how to convey emotions in portrait art through the effective use of color. The workshop commences with a brief presentation explaining the principles of color theory in portraiture\, and delving into the expressive potential of colors. The instructor will exemplify key techniques with a live demonstration\, and will then lead the participants through a series of exercises focused on studying various aspects of color. \nDuring the workshop\, students will gain proficiency in layering pastels\, employing an underpainting base followed by applications of both soft and hard pastels. SUMMARY:Wallflower Paintings by Corine van Hoeve
DESCRIPTION:Based in Dundas\, Ontario\, Corine began actively drawing and painting in mid-career after taking courses at the Dundas Valley School of Art (DVSA). Having previously obtained degrees from the University of Guelph\, Western University\, and University of Toronto\, she has\, at different times\, worked in finance and education as well as project management. When not out painting or sketching from life or en plein air\, Corine works from her studio at the Cotton Factory in Hamilton\, Ontario. \nInstagram: @cvanhoeve\nWebsite: cvanhoeve.ca\nEmail: cvanhoeve@gmail.com \nWhile artwork is made to be viewed and commented upon\, a ‘wallflower’ is\, by definition\, the opposite. It describes an individual who\, though present at parties and gatherings\, actively avoids direct connection with others. My paintings embody this duality: encouraging people to look while at the same time not necessarily returning the gaze. On another level\, they are studies in observation\, perhaps a little like a wallflower might carefully scrutinize who’s the life of the party from the corner of the room. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 14th\, 6-9pm \nInstructor is Allison Rostic\, the artist behind Red Squirrel Tail. \nIn this class you will learn to needle felt a black-capped chickadee. Needle felting uses a barbed needle to condense wool fibres\, allowing you to shape the wool. \n\n\nYou will learn how to make an armature to provide internal structure\, layer and sculpt wool to create the chickadee’s signature round body\, delicate wings\, and distinctive black cap. DESCRIPTION:Join No Crafts\, a skilled QBIPOC ceramic artist\, for a dynamic series of ceramic handbuilding workshops! This series is perfect for all skill levels\, from beginners to experienced artists\, and focuses on both structured projects or open studio time to explore your creativity. \nThe workshop series consists of two classes. You can attend one workshop for $35 or both for $60. \nSession 2: Advanced Handbuilding and Personal Projects will build on techniques learned in Session 1: Introduction to Handbuilding Techniques. This class will introduce participants to more complex forms and textures and will encourage them to start personal projects. Participants will receive individual guidance from the instructor for custom pieces\, as well as will have time to decorate with underglaze and open studio time for creative exploration. \nParticipants will be able to pick up their finished piece after they have been fired twice and the instructor has applied a final layer of clear glaze; approximately 3-4 weeks. \nAll materials are included. DESCRIPTION:At the heart of Stephanie Fortin’s practice is an ethical inquiry: is it necessary—or responsible—to aestheticize waste in the context of global exploitation and climate change? Engaging with forms and sites at the fringes of development—from the trees of urban forests to the industrial ruins of salvage yards—she examines how their surfaces reveal the entanglement of human activity and ecological systems. During the summer of 2024\, Fortin developed her approach in situ at a wrecking yard\, “recovering” rusted car hoods through a distinctive transfer process. Working with discarded vehicles\, she placed reclaimed silk over the corroded metal\, applying acetic acid. As the reaction unfolded overnight\, rust—acting as both residue and pigment—was lifted onto the textile. \nAiming beyond documentation\, Fortin’s materials engage with time\, climate\, and intervention\, exposing the socio-political histories embedded within them. The resulting images bear traces of decay and transformation\, making visible the residues of extraction and consumption. Throughout her work\, materiality\, pigment\, and process converge to confront the affective potential of such material encounters\, drawing attention to the subconscious and visceral responses they evoke. DESCRIPTION:During the darker winter days\, it’s nice to have a meditative art practice to turn to to help you relax and practice mindfulness. Weaving can have a tangible outcome (like a wall hanging or placemat)\, or be purely for relaxation and play – without the pressure of outcomes. Either way\, it becomes a transcript of your mood and imagination. \nIn this 2 hour class\, we will learn the basics of weaving with little to no financial investment. Using a cardboard loom that we make ourselves and the provided materials\, we will go over basic weaving techniques. \nWe will let the materials guide us and see where they take us. Our intuition will lead us while we slow down our thoughts and enjoy the creative process. No prior weaving experience necessary!

DESCRIPTION:Rocks\, Streams\, and Dreams is a multifaceted exhibition celebrating the beauty of nature and our connection to the environment. \nRunning from March 9 to May 4\, this show highlights the work of local artists and emerging talents\, offering a rich and diverse perspective on landscapes\, waterways\, and natural forms. \nOur member artists\, Diana Scott\, Sharyn Seibert\, Suzanne Wakefield\, Nancy Farrell\, and Patti Collins will all be hanging a variety of pieces inspired by Ontario’s beautiful landscapes. \nThis special collection features intricate botanical drawings by Mary Anne Young\, stunning photography by AJ Longstreet\, and compelling pieces from emerging artist Pat Flood. \nThe exhibition also includes works from Centennial High School students\, who studied photographs of the Yorklands site—a historic space at the heart of conservation efforts by Yorklands Green Hub—and transformed them into unique artistic interpretations under the guidance of teachers Karin Silverstone and Erin Mulcahey. \nIn celebration of Earth Day\, the exhibition highlights the significance of preserving and appreciating our natural spaces through art.

A dialogue with creativity itself in which the artist separates themselves and acts as a channel to be spoken through. The works in this series speak to the subtle and constant tension within the human form tirelessly contending with unseen guides\, picking and prying your internal compass. \n As defined by writer Paulo Coelho “Everything is written in the soul of the world and there it will stay forever.” Gabbi’s work in turn seeks to be in dialogue with the soul of the world\, the infinite well of knowledge\, through the language of intuition. She depicts both the cautionary tail of a false prophet\, and the knowledge the soul of the world affords those who will listen. This class is perfect for the photographer looking for inspiration and fresh ideas. We’ll look at new ways to photograph abstract patterns\, create impressionist effects and study compositional techniques\, using both in-camera settings and  post-processing options. \nTaught live via Zoom\, students have the opportunity to ask questions through out the class\, and will have access to the class recording for one month.  The course link will be sent via email two days before the class begins. \nFee:  $75.00 + HST.
