SUMMARY:Community Fabric
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS COMMUNITY FABRIC?\nPresented by Art Not Shame\, the Community Fabric project is a free\, ten-week community-arts series in which participants work together to create a community quilt\, while building social connections and developing skills to support their mental health and wellbeing. Each week the quilt will grow as community members explore mark-making through textiles as local artist facilitators guide them through teachings around appliqué\, embroidery\, hand-sewing\, printmaking\, and quilting. In collaboration with the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition and the Guelph Civic Museum\, participants will co-create a quilt that shares stories and experiences from neighbourhood groups across the City of Guelph. The quilt will be housed in Art Not Shame’s new community arts hub\, as a representation of the community members who will use the space and a physical symbol of inclusivity. The quilt will also be included in an exhibition at the Guelph Civic Museum in the Fall of 2024. \nNo experience necessary. This program is open to folks of all ages (children are welcome with their grown-up)! \nAll spaces are all ground floor and are physically accessible. All locations have accessible washroom facilities. Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided and are encouraged! \nYou can register for as many sessions as you’d like. The project will travel to the locations listed below. SUMMARY:Big Ideas Lecture and Exhibition Launch: What Remains
DESCRIPTION:Launching the ArtsEverywhere festival organized and presented by Musagetes\, join the artists of the El Paso-based What Remains Collective (Dr. Adriana Alvarez\, Iris Morales\, Mabel Weber\, and Monica Lozano) for a guided conversation about documenting the stories of immigrant families as well as the belongings abandoned by individuals over the course of attempts to cross the political border into the United States. \nThe conversation will be followed by an opening reception for the collective’s exhibition What Remains at the Art Gallery of Guelph\, that brings together photography\, video\, and La Trenza – an evolving installation that braids together the belongings and stories of humans in transit\, immigrants\, asylum seekers\, displaced families\, men\, women\, and children who have experienced the journey of crossing a border\, from the heavily militarized to the nearly invisible. SUMMARY:Pronto Plate Lithography Workshop at Otherwise Studios
DESCRIPTION:Learn traditional lithography techniques on an intaglio press using the pronto plate lithography method during this 2-part workshop\, May 16 & 23! \nLearn how to create an image\, work with greasy & oil-sensitive materials when creating artwork\, how to affix your image on your pronto plate\, and print an edition of prints to take home. \nLithography is a printmaking process based on the concept that oil and water don’t mix. The printmaker draws or paints using oily materials\, onto a flat stone\, prepared metal plate\, or polyester plate. This image is made “permanent” through a series of chemical reactions and then printed using oil-based ink. The pronto plate method is a safer method without the harmful chemicals required for traditional stone lithography. \nTo ensure willing participants have access to educational opportunities\, please email Ahmri at info@otherwisestudios.com if you face financial barriers.
