Inspired by her bookwork Book of Transformation, on view in the AGG’s exhibition The Drive, Devine will address the connections between oral traditions and visual narratives of the Anishinaabe and how these play a critical role in relationships with the land. Part of her larger project Stories from the Shield, this work addresses the devastating effect that uranium mining had on the Serpent River and the wider watershed.
Families welcome; children will be engaged in a hands-on art activity during the talk. Presented in conjunction with the Indigenous Healing & Wellness Program Wellington-Waterloo. A member of the Serpent River First Nation, Bonnie Devine is based in Toronto where she is Professor Emeritus at OCAD University and the Founding Chair of its Indigenous Visual Cultural Program.
