Al Qantara Forward - Mel Mrabet´s new World Fusion collaboration project
An Andalusian-Canadian Jazz World Fusion musician M El Mrabet, virtuoso on the Oud (Fretless Andalusian Lute) intermingles with Ravi Naimpally, Tabla player extraordinaire, an active member of the Canadian world music scene for nearly 20 years, a vital part of Toronto’s large South Asian community performing traditional music from India, while participating in many cross-cultural exchanges, joined along by master musicians Majd Sekkar (clarinet player originally from Syria).
The fretless Lute player, stringed Middle Eastern instrument pairs up with the Tabla and Clarinet to create a unique original sound drawn from Andalusian, Mideast, Flamenco roots, and other music influences.
It is a long-anticipated collaboration, which aims for a genuine musical experience, and where modals meet modes.
In spite of their dissimilar origins, these instruments complement each other, transcend music boundaries with singular sonorities intertwined in a way of dialogue to give birth to an outright true sound. The magic lies more in how the musicians respond to one another on stage than in a change of one’s style.
