SUMMARY:The Landscape is Dead- Anna Gaby-Trotz and Richelle Forsey
DESCRIPTION:Hours are Wednesday – Saturday\, 3pm – 5pm until November 2nd \nCan you (we) save the world by looking? \nThe idea of wilderness – land uncultivated and uninhabited by human beings – raises questions about how much truly natural land is left in a world that values the production of goods over people and the land. Through collage and digital montage of our photographs of agriculture\, land-management\, resource extraction sites\, utilities infrastructure\, the aftermath of forest fires\, icebergs\, development sites\, refuse\, development\, and destruction\, we open up our individual practices to collective thought and authorship through creative play and collaboration used to create this new body of work. \nThe language of hope and despair is woven into this work through screen printed text and images. The camera is a tool of agency and the collaborative process a de-centering of individual artist authorship to prioritize our explorations and the invitation for slow looking. \nHere\, in Wyndham’s 3rd Floor Gallery\, “The Landscape is Dead” reflects the intersection of the landscape and the built environment for contemplation\, to illuminate the complex and troubling questions about human impacts on the natural world.

SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping | Marking Time: Tour of the Old Stone Quarry Site at the Guelph Correctional Centre
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk and conversation with AGG Director Shauna McCabe and researcher and past chair of Heritage Guelph\, Brian Skerrett\, as they discuss the layered histories at play in Guelph\, with a focus on the site of the stone quarry on the grounds of the Guelph Correctional Centre (Ontario Reformatory). This dialogue will delve into the connections between geologies and geographies as well as between natural and built environments. \nWorked by those incarcerated at the Reformatory\, not only does the stone quarry expose layers of rock that reveal the earth’s stratigraphy and fossil records\, in this case a prehistoric reef\, the quarries became part of the cultural landscape as materials extracted were used to build local architecture\, influencing the aesthetic and structural characteristics of the region. \nThis tour is presented in conjunction with the AGG’s recent exhibition Yours in Native Spirit: Richard Bedwash\, curated by Shauna McCabe and Colinda Clyne\, as the Anishinaabe artist served a term there in the 1970s\, part of the intricate narrative that connects his work\, his life\, and the city of Guelph. \nRegistration is required: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/marking-time-tour-of-the-old-stone-quarry-site-at-the-ontario-reformatory-tickets-1008520059647?aff=oddtdtcreator \nNote that to access this site\, participants must walk over uneven ground for approximately 15 minutes and there are no washroom facilities on the site. In the case of extreme weather\, this walk will be rescheduled and any changes will be communicated by email to those registered.

SUMMARY:Art Not Shame Art-a-Thon
DESCRIPTION:Art Not Shame invites anyone who is interested to participate in their Art-a-Thon fundraising campaign.  \nThere are not enough accessible\, inclusive art spaces in Guelph and Art Not Shame is going to change that! They are opening a brand new space downtown and are excited to start to welcome the community into this space\, but they need support from the community to help them finish the final touches and ensure the space is intentional and truly accessible for all.  \nAny time between September 1st and 28th\, Art Not Shame is inviting folks to put self-criticism and judgement aside and enjoy the simple act of creating. Utilizing creative prompts as a guide you can sing\, draw\, sew\, write\, paint or do whatever you’re called to do while asking your friends\, family and colleagues to sponsor and cheer you on all while supporting Art Not Shame.

SUMMARY:Berene Campbell speaks at Royal City Quilters Guild
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lecture \nALL TOGETHER NOW: Harnessing hope by working together for change.\nIn her talk Berene encourages leaning into discomfort and tells the story of how her work has evolved by embracing the emotional ride that the past few years have been for us all. \nTo quote Berene from her website: \n“Quilts hold the spirit of their makers\, and the secrets of their thoughts pondered while stitching. They are beautiful treasures that provide us with warmth & comfort\, but they can do more for us if we so choose. Quilts can be posters for our ideas\, messengers of our messages\, and uniters of our communities. They hold great power.” \n\n\nBerene’s Bio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBerene Campbell of Happy Sew Lucky is a modern quilt designer\, speaker and community project instigator. Her quilting and sewing patterns feature inspiring messages of positivity and hope\, with the goal of making the world a kinder and more peaceful place. A “collective energy” enthusiast\, Berene uses quilting to corral fellow creatives to work together for change. These projects include collaborative community installations\, fundraisers for social justice causes\, and the Handmade Collective Awards – a scholarship fund at Toronto Metropolitan University set up for the maker community to fund awards for BIPOC and 2SLGBTQ+ students. \nBerene’s website: https://happysewlucky.com/ \n\n\nVisit http://rcqg.square.site to purchase a $10 guest pass. SUMMARY:Entrelazados: Justin Favela Opening Party & Artists’ Introduction
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening party celebrating Entrelazados: Justin Favela and an introduction to the exhibition by the Las Vegas-based visiting artist. Investigating his own heritage and identity as a queer\, Latinx\, Guatemalan-Mexican-American born in the southwestern United States\, Favela’s work remixes popular culture\, lived traditions\, and art history as a way to amplify the interwoven influences on personal and collective experiences. From sculptures to a new site-specific immersive installation\, Favela adapts simple materials like cardboard\, paper\, tape\, and glue to speak to the powerful interwoven legacies that shape one’s everyday existence and how they converge within collective histories of migration and community. \nMarking the first exhibition of Justin Favela’s work in Canada\, all are welcome to this free event; refreshments and a cash bar will be available. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet the artist and explore the vibrant celebration of cultural heritage and creativity at the heart of his work. \nImage detail: Justin Favela\, Recuérdame (detail)\, 2018\, paper and glue on wall.
